While the PGA Tour will be at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans this week, I will be attending the local Korn Ferry tour event on Friday in Lakewood Ranch, FL.

Planning to follow former RU player Chris Gotterup at his 9am tee time. I’ve seen him briefly on tv in the past and looking forward to seeing him play a great course that I’ve played many times in the past.Hoping that he has a breakout week.

Chris finished -6 today, 2 strokes behind the leaders. I’ll be following his round at 9 am tomorrow and will provide an update early afternoon.

Its a 10 year old model... not an actual 10 year old club. With the amount of balls these guys hit, if it was the same clubs, they would be falling apart with not a single groove left on the faces.

Still odd though since in one line it says he's looking for the "advantage", but clubs from 10 years ago are not using the best technology, science, etc as today. I understand the comfort factor and removing the variables. but again, with the number of balls these guys hit, he should be real comfortable with new clubs pretty quick. I got new clubs 2 years ago and gained back about a club and a half of distance. Took me all of about 2 rounds to get used to them.
Yes I read the article, I actually posted the article. It's a design over 10 years old with 10 year old technology and materials. I thought my post and the article were very clear on that.
You missed my point. Dimwits buy anything that is advertised as new. When you find something that works stick with it. Both Tiger and Rory lost majors playing with Nike crap.

I wasn't implying you were deceptive, but I assumed others like me read it as though he was playing with 10 year old clubs. I still believe though that technology and materials are better today than 10 years ago.

And fully agree that people, especially golfers, will buy anything that they feel will improve their game... but won't go get a lesson.

Tiger won 8 of his 15 majors playing Nike golf gear (He started using Nike for the 2002 season and stopped in 2016 when Nike got out of the business). Kind of hard to argue it cost him majors when half his wins were with that equipment company.

That being said, what he was playing wasn't quite what you were buying off the racks either. In fact, some alleged that his Nike blades were actually from another manufacturer and just stamped Nike.

Another -6 for Chris Gotterup today, 8 birdies and a bad luck double bogie, to currently place him 4 strokes back in 3rd place headed into the weekend.

Watching him play today he is extremely long off the tee, 300++, strong iron player and very good putter. Based on what I saw today I give him an excellent chance to finish top 20 in Korn Ferry this year and be promoted to the PGA Tour next season.

Lots of very good players on the Korn Ferry Tour. Everyone appears to be strong tee to green with the best players also being very good with the short game and putting. One player, Mac Meissner shot 30-29-59 today with a walk off eagle on a par 5.

Correct. Tiger was playing Mizuno and Muira blades stamped as Nike.

A wee bit OT.

On the Korn Ferry Tour this week, former RU golfer Chris Gotterup is T4 after 2 rounds, One of the guys he's tied with is a blast from the past, Tommy "Two Gloves" Gainey. Didn't know he was still around. Wasn't he involved in some kind of scandal?

Tommy Gainey, the pride of Darlington, SC, was a popular player and winner on the Big Break tv show in 2007. Nicknamed two gloves for wearing golf rain gloves on both hands and using a baseball grip on the club.

He’s been on the PGA Tour since 2008 and has won more than $5M in prize money. In recent years he has struggled but is still competing on the Korn Ferry tour. He is known as an excellent putter.

I’m thinking about going to the baseball grip. I currently use the Spieth interlock with right pinky off. Just feels more free.

I used interlock most of my life (like Tiger because Jack used it) and then switched to overlap about 10-15 years ago. Interlock was causing me to hit fat at times. I read that interlock is better for small fingers (which I do not have). Overlap has freed me up and hit much longer/more consistent.

Gotterup is 4 back in 8th place going into tomorrows final round. 20 players within 3 shots of him.

$1M total purse with only the top 3 places paying more than 50k. Tenth place pays 25k. Tough way to make a living against top players.

Yes it is. That's why finishing the year in the Top 30 is so important.

Did you notice his teammate last year at Oklahoma, Logan McAllister, is one stroke ahead of Gotterup? He was the star till Chris showed up and took the #1 spot winning all the big Awards. That could be interesting if they're paired together.

Good point. In fact they will be playing together tomorrow, teeing of at 12:07 pm in the 4th group. Best of luck to Chris. There are a handful of RU fans following him onsite this week.

I'll take 25k a week minus expenses for a top 10 plus money from sponsors. Not complaining at all but when I was an Assistant Pro we had none of the options Gotterup has today. I'm glad he has them. His fastest way to the PGA is the late fall PGA where he got a lot of invites. Win one of those and you are on the tour.

I don't know about sponsor money and the extra some make showing up at outings but he has made $600k give or take in less than 11 months as a pro so I'd think he's in ok shape for now in that regard

Here’s a weird story from this tournament. Six players on Friday accepted an illegal cart ride from a volunteer driver to travel across the street from #18 green to #1 tee. The volunteer was not authorized to transport them between those holes and the players got assessed a 2 stroke penalty each for accepting the ride. It caused one player the opportunity to play in more KF events this season. One player, Boo Weekley didn’t accept the ride but let his caddy hop on. He was also assessed a 2 stroke penalty that caused him to miss the cut. The golf pro from the course may get fired over this snafu.

Many of these volunteers are new to golf and have no idea of golf course etiquette. When we were walking off the 11th tee on Friday a cart full of 6 volunteers at the end of their shift almost drove through a taut rope that almost clothes-lined them at neck level.

The problem is what he made on the PGA Tour last fall doesn't count to PGA Tour earnings as he wasn't a PGA Tour member. He has long road to being on the PGA Tour

I get it. I just meant he likely has the $$$ to play on the tour which I understands costs in the 6 figures. I seem to remember there was a time when you had to show you had enough to support yourself on the big tour for a year before you were given your tour card.

Oh yes. Mandatory local events. If you weren't top ten you lost money as you had to pay to play and had monthly dues.

The crowd at the PGA Tour event in New Orleans is pathetic. Time to kill the team even. No one cares. I’m hoping Xander/Cantley make a final run here but knowing Cantlay that could take 3 hours to play 4 holes.

Most PGA events are pathetic and can be cancelled. Just not enough stars to cover all the tourneys.

Chris Gotterup finished T5, 2 strokes out of 1st, after shooting a 4 Under 67. He's now 33rd in the race for Top 30 who get a Tour Card at the end of the season. His former Oklahoma teammate, Logan McCallister, tied for 1st. but lost in a playoff.

Simulators are awesome, Long story short, had a kid a few years back and have only been able to get out once a week. Had been a verifiable addict. Sucked losing my game. It would show up one in every five rounds, driver accuracy and distance fell off a cliff.

A simulator place opened down the street a few weeks ago and they had an introductory membership, unlimited off peak for not a lot of money. Not hard for me to take an hour during the day, so I joined. Man, what a revelation. Just started matching up club path to face angle and solved mysteries to much of what I'd always struggled with. What you feel isn't necessarily what is happening. To see the data ='s trust. Even chipping is an easy fix with the data. Still learning what all the data points means but I'm a better player all of a sudden than I ever was. Topped out at 4.2 hdcp but thinking I'm going lower as soon as the scores kick in over the next few weeks.

Was never going to spend $8k, much less the $60K some do, to own one. Never felt comfortable shelling out regularly to go to a simulator place. I guess a lot of ranges now have the data but there isn't one anywhere near me. Its been a revelation.

Anyone else on the sim?

PGA Superstore near me has unlimited use of practice bays with full analytics and cameras showing each swing from the side or rear for $150 per year. Ball analytics are great but the cameras have helped me identify swing flaws that I can’t see otherwise.

Making a full shoulder turn, weight shift, position of hands in the upswing and swing path on the follow through have been very helpful. When I saw the initial videos of my swing I was shocked at what I saw. “That can’t be my swing” was my first reaction.

I wanted one but my garage was too low and it was stupid money at the time. I think now you can get a good one for 8k vs 30k in 2019. You can fix your swing flea quickly thanks to the data. My problem is I fix one and another pops up.

Very happy for Finau. Hope he can final breakthrough
He has already broken through. It took him 188 tournaments to get his first win. He now has 5 wins in his last 41 starts. Now he has to add a major. Big fan of his. Great win.

In what way? They actually broke an attendance record for the event last week.

Did you actually watch the tournament? No one was there. There were literally holes with no fans on them. Now that could have been the course set-up, but even 18 was light.

I saw several social media posts describing the struggle NO has getting fans to show up. They may have "broke" an attendance record, but it's a pretty low bar (think Rutgers claimed attendance vs. actual fans in the seats).

I did. But fact is they set an attendance record and it raises a lot for charity in the New Orleans area. Pre-Covid, they'd get between 100-120K over the full event.

That's a pretty healthy number. They had around 35K walk through the gates on Saturday last week.

Social media posts from who? I bet some of those social media posts are driven by the LIV homers. My twitter feed is now full of the LIV accounts that basically just criticize PGA events.

Sorry, I meant majors. He has the game. Just need to work on between the ears. Hopefully a big win over Rahm can help.
