My wife and I watched The Patriot today for a 4th of July themed movie. The director really wants you to despise and loathe the Jason Isaacs character but I think they actually overdo it. It was still a good watch.

I have watched 1776 in past years.

Any movies other's watch or think is a good movie for the holiday?

(And you guys from the Airplane post don't just preshit on me.)

The Patriot is a great movie, one of my favorites! History it ain't though. That war got very brutal at times, especially when Patriots were fighting Loyalists, but the British weren't Nazis. That's just Mel...he doesn't like the English. See Braveheart, another great one that is Mel's version of history.

There’s a movie I saw at Deville back in the day about the revolution, not “1776”, when I was in grade school. I think it concentrated on Kosciusko, but I can’t find it. Already looked for 60s&70s films on IMDB. Any SPS help will be appreciated.

The Longest Day is a good watch.

I do like The Patriot. The Southern Campaign was one of the most brutal, personal, and vindictive parts of the War for Independence. Killing was personal and vicious. Issac’s character was a representation of Banister Tarelton, a man Americans should love to hate.

The HBO series “John Adams” covers the events leading up to independence and the process of declaring independence in the first two episodes. A must watch for July 4th.
Excellent series. Puts our forefathers in perspective.

We watched Batman because it will take vigilante action to save our country. ****

It’s sad that the Battle of Gilford Courthouse represents the only American victory in The Patriot. The movie left out The Cowpens (already pointed out), and also King’s Mountain. To prove the brutality between the two sides in the Revolution, there were no British survivors in that battle. Major Patrick Ferguson and his group of loyalist were killed to a man.

The Southern campaign of the American Revolution was truly a civil war- both sides committed atrocities against each other, sometimes because of their loyalties, some times to settle old scores in family feuds.

Cowpens, in my opinion, is the most underrated battle in American history. If Daniel Morgan does not win at Cowpens, we don't win the war.
It’s worth visiting the battlefield if you’re close. It’s small enough you can walk it.

One movie that ain’t fiction is the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan. Many have confirmed that. War is hell, and there’s nothing that can make that better.

I imagine the hell that is portrayed in the Patriot is just a glimpse into the real hell.

As for Ryan, the first 20 minutes is one of the most historically accurate war scenes ever filmed. I’ve been to the real spot where the unit Hanks’ character was in actually landed. Those big German bunkers are still there. It will send chills up your spine.

The Patriot, as I said, was one really good movie. I love it. History it isn’t. The Brits of the time weren’t Nazis. They didn’t lock women and children up in churches and burn the churches down. The Revolution, especially in the situations where you had Patriots directly fighting Loyalists, was brutal at times. Overall it wasn’t total war as war became in the 20th century. Mel doesn’t like the English at all. That carries over into his movies like The Patriot and Braveheart.

Watched "We're the Millers", it takes place July 4 weekend. Gets Anniston to strip. Not difficult to enjoy for a July 4 movie.

This year the kids and I went with Rocky IV, Top Gun Maverick, Red Dawn, and Saving Private Ryan (I let my little one skip this one). I like our patriotic movies to be pretty clear as far as who are the good guys and who are the bad guys, and America has to come out on top in the end, so those four were easy calls. We watched The Hunt for Red October recently too, which is one of my favorites from that era.

Another one I highly recommend for your list is Patriot's Day. I'd love for my kids to see this one, but the Boston accent (meaning every other word is an f-bomb) is just too much for now.
