The average person trying to make ends meet doesn’t care about inflation in other countries—all they know is that their groceries, meals out, gas, housing prices, loans, etc have gone up a lot since 2021.

Well W Bush screwed with the federal surpluses by starting wars in order to accrue political capital and we will struggle to get out from under that trajectory until a little billionaire austerity happens (and them simply paying taxes they already owe would be an improvement as the unpaid “tax gap” has soared in recent years).

I have no affinity for billionaires, but how much can you really expect to get from them collectively in any year? Sure, it will make some people feel better but it probably will be a blip in overall tax revenue.
Wages are definitely lagging due to the inflation spike of 22 but are now catching up. Just know that billionaires are lending to the US government by buying Treasuries while they simultaneously “invest” in Bitcoin because federal deficits are definitely a big problem and threaten the currency.

I usually use the term mega-millionaires and there are actually quite a few households in that category in this country. Tax cuts by W and Trump were huge in dollar terms to mega-millionaires. I agree with you that the middle class gets screwed today so I was very happy that the Dems even got former Bernie bro Fetterman to say that middle class taxes should be lowered…and there is no big push for Medicare for all. I’m not a fan at all of adopting the British health-care model although other European nations offer some decent ideas which could bring the outrageous costs down in the US. I can’t believe people bother to complain about gasoline when they are paying 10X what they pay for gas in healthcare every year.

Reasonable center-left takes, so much appreciated. So allow me to react from a center-right view. Average people only really compare themselves to themselves. Those with an agenda, such as to make people feel like victims, point out what others are getting. The 2017 tax cuts helped people at the lower end more than the higher end. I believe it was 5+% after tax. So wages were going up, unemployment was going down, and they got to keep more of what they made. Unfortunately, much of the healthcare costs are the result of the ACA. So in the later 44 years, things were improving in terms of employment and wage growth, but they were being eaten up by higher healthcare costs from company plans having to be compliant with ACA, the result being higher out of pocket costs and less competition (all the hospital systems buying each other up, like RWJ Barnabas). The combination of wage growth and tax cuts under 45 got people back to even and then in the black again. My hope with any of these discussions is not to change anyone's point of view, but to show that there are equally compelling facts from the opposite perspective.
I am hoping (dreaming?) to see more exchanges like this convo between KnightOwl and WasAtRutgers in the future. Silly, I know...

Yup the same Europe that struggled much more significantly from higher energy inflation being on the frontline of the Russia-Ukraine war, is suffering markedly from the China slowdown, and, as usual, is paying the price of their socialist-lite labor laws that handcuff businesses. Btw the WaPO article is actually a fairly balanced analysis, some highlights:
- The origins of this (U.S.) doom-defying performance can be traced to lawmakers’ swift response to the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020. Before the month had ended, Congress approved more than $2 trillion in help for the economy as businesses closed and 17 million Americans lost their jobs.
- But the principal force behind today’s robust economy lies in fiscal policy, the use of government spending and taxation to boost growth. Under two presidents — one Republican and one Democrat — lawmakers opted to bathe the economy in cash to ward off the coronavirus.
- All of that government spending — the stimulus checks, the loans to small businesses and the expanded unemployment benefits — added up to an astonishing 25.5 percent of gross domestic product, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Whereas Americans were laid off but then aided by unemployment and stimulus checks, Europeans were kept on the job. That spared them the uncertainty of labor market limbo but often locked them into jobs that were not needed in the post-pandemic world.

To be fair, 43 did run up deficits on wars that went beyond their initially intended purpose, and 44 did have a once in a century financial crisis to deal with. One can argue whether those monies could be spent differently, but most reasonable people would acknowledge that those initial Covid relief packages were necessary even though some bad actors were able to take advantage of them.
