This is wild:

Wild is an understatement! Second tweet is most glaring. Adding additional members and allowing those members to operate without payment automatically reduces their appeal and renders them susceptible to it being a viable program in the future and also puts the GOR at risk.

Let me ask you this... what would we (Rutgers) do if this was happening to us?

Multiple natty's and Heisman's
Top 10 brand in college FB
Sold a bill of goods by the ACC and Swofford

If they're smart, they'd do what they needed to do to get the F out of the league, into another league and continuing competing at an elite level

I'd prefer this be done behind the scenes - I don't like things out in the open

But if you worked as hard as they did to build their program, and you could see it come crashing down right before your eyes...chances are you'd be doing the same thing
Jay
I get it you’re interested in them that’s wonderful. I don’t feel sorry for FSU in anyway. They weren’t sold anything the rest wasn’t. Yet FSU is the only one whining & acting like little bitches about it. No one held a gun on them to sign that GOR agreement, they freely chose to. I made the rounds to other ACC teams sites today. Just to get a feel for how they view this. I didn’t find any other school that supported FSU not 1.

How would I feel if Rutgers was in that position you asked. I would hope like crazy they wouldn’t act like a spoiled child.

I don’t honestly care what FSU chooses to do. Or how much money it costs them. I will be honest in saying I don’t want them in the B1G. I could care less about their so called brand, we have enough brands in our conference. Our leadership got more money from our Media partners than the “It Just Means More” league got. So we don’t need the headaches FSU brings.

You predict FSU leaves, I predict that within 2 years of being in a new conference. They’ll be saying why are we making the same as Rutgers or Vanderbilt? It’s just their M.O.

We’ll disagree on this, that’s fine but you should visit the other ACC sites. Your school isn’t well liked

Either way, this isn’t personal against you.

Happy Holidays

I get it man all good

I’m not thrilled with how they’re going about it, but I don’t think that they have any other choice

It will be interesting to see how things shake out, as college athletics in general is changing exponentially, and is way different than how we grow up with

Happy holidays, my man, enjoy!

Puts the "raw deal" Rutgers got going into the B1G in a whole new light. Thank goodness we got in when we did.

95 or any other posters in the know, below is what was posted on TMB (copied and pasted it word for word), long read but worth the time and appears to make sense. What are your thoughts?

"Clemson already has a lawsuit ready for filing but are waiting to hear the ACC’s response. I thought they were going to file today, but they’ve decided to hold off for the time being to decide what their counter arguments should be.

UNC was always planning on waiting for counter arguments as NC doesn’t have the same state laws protecting it that FSU and Clemson do, so they are going to need a different strategy.

Additionally, the SEC is more likely to work with the GOR given that the SEC and ACC have the same primary partnership with ESPN. FSU and Clemson are preparing for B16 membership (applying for AAU membership, investing heavily in transportation, investing heavily in research, etc.) and are planning on challenging the GOR.

Boo Corrigan likely switched to allow in SMU/Stanford/Cal to allow FSU/Clemson/UNC use the legal arguments of gross incompetence and mismanagement of brands. Boo also likely opted to keep FSU out of the Playoff to stoke the fire and guarantee NC State has a landing place during the fallout, hence why I believe State gets a comfy seat in the SEC.

FSU and Clemson are both making plays to move to the B16 and are showing their commitment. The B16 isn’t going to give an offer as long as the GOR is still in effect. Both will gladly take half the money for the first couple of years. Fox and the B16 commissioner have made it clear they’re interested in moving into the Southeastern market and run the B16 like a pro league, having television markets everywhere but also games on constantly in all regions. Clemson is willing to put forth more of an effort to compete and recruit nationally, as well as invest more money, than Miami is. I believe Miami will be in the B16 in the last stage of the expansion (either Miami or Pitt, whoever is willing to spend more money) along with GT, with GT actually looking to raise the money to make it happen. Before that happens, when the conference becomes very unstable and the big brands announce they’re leaving, NBC is going to announce they are out as ND’s future scheduling viewership is going to be severely affected with them playing subpar teams for half of their schedule. ND is going to be forced to actually join a league, and I believe it will be the B16 and they bring in Stanford.

The SEC has made it clear they want UNC and UVA. ESPN will likely make this happen and wave the GOR when FSU and Clemson leave instead of fighting a legal battle. UVA will need VT per state law, and the state of Va is not willing to budge on this. I believe NC State solidified their place as part of an agreement to put in Bama. What happened was a huge controversy no matter how many echo chambers ESPN sends out saying otherwise, which is part of why the ACC is going to dissolve, and this IS going to come up in court.

This is why I have stated how I see everything shaking out. What IS known:
FSU HAS filed.
Clemson WILL file, likely before the end of the year, although the bowl game may influence this. I expect it to happen before the end of the first week of January at the latest.
UNC WILL file. They are going to wait and see what the ACC does, and wait until the ACC already has their hands full, and then throw the final uppercut after FSU and Clemson give them the ole’ 1-2.
Miami HAS NOT filed or invested the money/resources for a legal battle (yet).
UVA HAS raised the money and are going through the legality of leaving, but they’re connected to VT legally on a state level, so it will require both to leave or the conference to collapse, so they will be leaving later. This has really complicated their plans.
ND DID NOT join the ACC in football. If they had, all of this would have been moot. This is what FSU (and Clemson and UNC consequently) was actually waiting on. The snub was just icing on the cake and fodder for the cannon."

I think people get too hung up on the economics. Schools like FSU want to be the best. Once you are in a league that is perceived as inferior your recruiting suffers - that is really the death blow. It's why TX and OK jumped and why USC jumped. Going undefeated and being left out largely because of the ACC's weakness was the last straw for FSU is my guess. I can only imagine the negative recruiting now: UF coach "sure star recruit - go to FSU - go undefeated playing Cuse and Wake and miss out on the playoff. Or play in the SEC - tough call?"

I'd definitely be using that to my advantage if I were an SEC school
It's true though, too

ACC is inferior in everything
Quality of football, athletes, facilities, fan bases, stadiums, traditions, etc.

The truth hurts, but that's how it is

It's not a competitiveness thing, it's a money thing. Presidents are not going to vote someone in to take less. ESPN told the ACC to go for the competitiveness thing and see how that's worked out. UNC and UVA TV markets are coveted and will surely add to the pie. This is about how many eyeballs you can reach in an area, not how many fans or alumni a school has.
You being sarcastic ? Sure, the Big Ten is foaming at the mouth for the 177th ranked Charlottesville market. UVa will make a nice fit in the AAC once the ACC crumbles. They can establish a nice rivalry with James Madison and Old Dominion.

NBC has already agreed to an extension with ND. I posted that during the season.

Also the GOR has nothing to do with ESPN legally. The ACC is the one who holds the GOR not ESPN.

The ACC, or any conference, having a guarantee (the GOR) for a set period of time allows them a better negotiating position with ESPN or any of the networks. It’s basically saying we can guarantee this is our conference membership for this period of time and you’ll have access to our member schools for that period of time. With that guaranteed baseline set it allows for a better bargaining position for the conference but the networks have nothing to do with it legally including allowing or not allowing anything with relation to them.
Unless of course they can show that the administration of the ACC which had a fiduciary responsibility to their members, relied too much on the advice fromESPN. Which has been discussed ad nauseam over the years and was mentioned in the FSU case. Therefore exposing both the ACC and ESPN to tortious interference claim.

I don’t think ESPN or any network would get their hands dirty to that point. The B12 nearly collapsed and the PAC did and no network had any issues. That to me is much worse than anything happening to FSU.

It’s usually hypotheticals if we do this or this then what would you give us etc…Conferences can have media consultants advise them as well. The networks don’t explicitly make any conference do anything but the conference leaderships are always looking to squeeze every last dollar so they will execute the hypotheticals that give them the most money.

The networks can say to whatever conference we’ll give you this amount of money if you had these schools but they can’t make the conference do anything. If the conference leadership says no thanks that geography or whatever doesn’t work for us well then that’s that but they never do because everyone wants every last dollar. Nothing wrong with that but I don’t see network liability in that situation.

I didn't say anything about the networks. My point was to schools like FSU - what might seem like a draconian penalty/ amount of money to pay at some point gets eaten up by the desire to win.

Somewhat agree. ESPN didn’t “force” the ACC to take their advice. But the conference and network have been attached at the hip since the 80’s. Not saying it will be easy to prove but there is a fiduciary responsibility of the ACC and if FSU can prove that ESPN advises improperly who knows what can happen. Seen many deals broken up after the fact because negligent advisory services and bad contracts.

Networks have some influence because they have control of the purse strings but in the end conferences have their own autonomy.

I’ll give the example of Delany and the BTN. He didn’t allow himself to be influenced to the point where it wasn’t in the best interest of the conference to take ESPN’s offer and started the BTN instead. He exercised the autonomy that he had. They all have it but it doesn’t mean they use it well. Even now the B10 for the first time ever doesn’t have an agreement with ESPN. It exercised its autonomy and said we’re going to try something different that we think is better.

So the networks have influence for sure but I don’t think it’s ever to the point where their hands are really dirty. The final decisions are always made by the conference leadership.

Yea but all of this is open to interpretation. All you need is to find “experts” to interpret undue influence (ESPN) and negligence of fiduciary obligation (ACC) and you have a case. It will be hard to prove and I don’t like how whiny FSU has been. But there’s more traction lately to make a case.

Maybe but that just sounds like litigation will take years and years and no conference will touch FSU while they have any litigation ongoing.

It’s also been 7 years since that extension in exchange for the ACC network. If it was so bad why no stink about it until 7 years later.

I don’t see any motivation for the ACC to budge either unless some massive payout occurs.

Since you said anyone else Jay. Too many personalized assumptions that are wrong. Pitt will never get accepted into the B1G. Clemson and Miami have the same issues as FSU not enough sports teams to meet the minimum.

NBC signed new contract with ND to match the length of the new B1G contract.
Push will be to join B1G in all sports for next contract. ND has zero leverage as they can’t afford to get pushed out of B1G hockey conference.

Carolina is next highest school on B1G wishlist behind ND.

rethink that statement

its not about the BIG for some, it's about the next best thing and having options
I think the b12 will be a player in this as well and ready to pounce on schools like Pitt and Louisville. If they can help kill off the acc they pretty much can stabilize themselves for the foreseeable future, increase payouts due to less competition and maybe keep a seat at the playoff table if the sec and b1g don't break off. Iirc Sankey wants to restructure the playoff payouts to conferences now the the pac12 is defunct. If true more money for the remaining conferences if acc is kaput.

I am not sure what 7 schools can be thinking. They aren’t all going to find homes in the B1G and SEC.
Did you pay attention to what happen to the PAC or what happen to us in the BigEasr? Schools will scramble to find a landing spot. Some will find better homes while others will look to just survive.

how much will any future contract be worth if they end up playing a softer schedule that excludes historical Rival schools that no longer have room in the schedule for ND? With a weaker schedule, would an undefeated ND make the playoffs (see florida sr). Real tough questions that ND must find an answer for.

I don’t see it like that. The B12 and ACC are on par. If anything I’d see a WVU and UCF go towards the ACC than any ACC teams going towards the B12, specifically in that 2030 timeframe when the B12 GOR is up.

It’s not as if it’s going to be easy to break the GOR but realize if the ACC GOR is breakable than so is the B12’s GOR.

I suspect it will still be costly and most schools won’t want to pay it as most schools won’t have landing spots in either the B10 or SEC. You’re not paying exorbitant amounts to escape to the B12 or ACC for that matter.

I agree or we could see a hybrid between what is left of ACC, pac and B12.

I know one thing, If I'm the president or ad of any of the ACC schools not named FSU or UNC, I'm assuming break up and am already working on the after conference.

Did you pay attention to what happen to the PAC or what happen to us in the BigEasr? Schools will scramble to find a landing spot. Some will find better homes while others will look to just survive

how much will any future contract be worth if they end up playing a softer schedule that excludes historical Rival schools that no longer have room in the schedule for ND? With a weaker schedule, would an undefeated ND make the playoffs (see florida sr). Real tough questions that ND must find an answer for.
What I saw was the PAC doing anything and everything to stick together, even Oregon and Washington. It was practically the 11th hour before the decision was made to jump. People in the B10 thought it wasn’t happening the night before it happened.

Schools don’t generally want to move but they move because they feel like they have to and sure a move for the B10 and SEC might be worth it but not for the B12. They’re not going to pay hundreds of millions for the B12 and frankly some might not be willing even for the SEC and B10. Who is to say they all have access to the same PE/investor money that FSU is accessing or are willing to agree to terms that may come with taking such money.

I also don’t see B10 or SEC landing spots for so many teams. I don’t even think the B10 would go over 20 without ND.

That’s not how I saw it. They were all scrambling to find the nearest exit but kept the option of staying together if they couldn’t find a landing spot. How do you think the big12 and B1G were able to move so quickly. They were all having discussions as soon as USC and UCLA announced their intentions.

Of course they were having discussions with others but their first goal was sticking together. They could have jumped ship any time especially to the B12 but they were stringing it out waiting to see if they could get a manageable tv deal. It wasn’t even less money as much as the lack of exposure that was the deal breaker. The B12 was waiting with open arms and Yormark was courting them for awhile so they could go anytime to the B12 but they didn’t until the very end.

Even reports Phil Knight was warming up to the idea of just being exclusive on Apple.

Read articles about when it went down, think it may have been in the Athletic, and how really up until the last moment things were uncertain and quite a few thought the PAC was about to hold together.

pac should not have listened to an academic on valuations nor should they have let 2 members dictate expansion

they got what they deserved, much like the BE

bad leadership leads to bad things

You might want to sit this one out till you do a little research.
I need to sit it out? So what “coveted” market does UVa bring? What rivalries do they bring? Oh can’t wait for that big Maryland/UVa game. It’ll be like Auburn/Alabama

ND has history with the following B1G schools

Michigan
PennState
Purdue
USC
Michigan State
Indiana
3 of those 6 can be yearly contest. How great for our partners to have
Ohio St vs Michigan at noon
Penn St vs Notre Dame at 4 pm each year.

They can still play 3 out of conference games
Navy
Boston College
Stanford

I’m not sure how that’s weaker than their schedule now
