Texas Weiner 1, Plainfield.

Already had a Black Bear natural casing frankfurter with cheese and mustard this morning! Great breakfast!
I've explained before that to there's no such thing as bad pizza except in extreme examples. I'm indifferent between Costco pizza, deep dish pizza, greek pizza and artisan pizza. All different but all tasty.

Same with hot dogs. I've been to Rutt's Hut, Hot Dog Johnny's, Texas Wiener, Nathan's and have had famous Dodger dogs. And countless others. Different but all good.

Line them up in front of me and I wouldnt have a preference

No, no, no! That North Plainfield one on 22 was awful and filthy! So dirty that even the mice and rats stopped going there. Lol. It closed awhile ago I think.
The original Texas Weiners on Watchung and Front Street.
Agree somewhat that all hot dogs are all good but only if they are made old way with a natural casing. Oscar Mayer and Ballpark Hot Dogs are garbage.
Other places I like are Max's in Long Branch and The Windmill chain. Rutt's tasted good but they must bribe the health department on a regular basis.

Love hot dogs! My favorite might be Hot Dog Johnny's for "classic" hot dogs, while my favorite Italian style hot dog is Big Blue's in Linden, and when I want to go fancy/international, Destination Dogs is the place. Growing up, I used to have 2 Oscar Meyer hot dogs and 2 Pop Tarts (blueberry) many days for lunch from middle school onward (split sessions, so was often home for lunch). And now, my favorites are the amazing hot dogs from our local butcher (Nick's Meat Depot in Edison), which I only discovered a few years ago.

Also looks like I raised my son right, as he and his buddies (late 20s) just did a NJ hot dog "crawl" hitting up Rutt's, Jimmy Buff's, Texas Wiener, Windmill and Hot Dog Johnny's - his favorite was Jimmy Buff's - can't go wrong with any of those (we hit all those at least once when he was a kid).

Destination Dogs.

We never stopped at Hot Dog Johnny's as a kid - Dad wasn't a fan and it would always be packed. Instead, on our family trips up to the Poconos (or on our way home), we would always stop at much superior King Cole's Grove - Dad would get two chili dogs, Mom and I would get cheeseburgers and we'd all share some onion rings, while eating in the shade right on the banks of the Delaware. Good memories...

I have a bad experience with Texas Weiner in Plainfield. I was working at the Bambergers dept store in Plainfield on a Sunday night at the holidays and the only place open for a dinner break was Texas Weiner. A bunch of us from the store ate there, but I was the only one that got sick.

It was beloved by all in the area except for me.

But I could go for Johnny and Hanges here in Fair Lawn (obviously I've moved to a different part of the state).

Been over 30 years but the Goffle Grill in Hawthorne used to be good.

It was right next to Two Guys and Korvette's, lol
I was born in Plainfield! Lived there until after 8th grade. We had a house in Lavallette beginning in 1968. Where were there every weekend between Easter and Thanksgiving and most of the summer but knew all of Plainfield very well. Including the years my uncle was mayor.
Two guys was a nice store on 22. I never was in Korvette's but my mom and oldest sister loved that place.

I have taken Thumann’s dogs several hundred miles, and nearly everyone agrees - they’re the best they’ve ever had.
The best!! The closest I can get them is at the the ShopRite near the Quaker Bridge Mall. And yes I do drive 30 miles+ to get them.

Yes, it seems only some Shop Rites have them. Must depend on the store franchisor. My brother gets them from Costco.

We always stopped at either KCG or HDJ. Dad liked KCG because he could get a 🍺 with his meal...lol.

These days, hand me any hot dog with a natural casing and I am a happy camper.

My favorite hot dog joint growing up was the Olde Heidelberg in Keansburg. I enjoyed a few hundred franks there from the late 60s until the early 80s. Simply, they were the best!

This was the period in time when Woody and Marie owned the place. Any time you'd go there, this is what you'd see... the two of them manning the grill!

https://www.sutori.com/en/story/brief-history-of-the-olde-heidelberg-inn--Hsj7zrk2HeXb8VypiapDLzcP

As noted in the brief history, the Olde Heidelberg today serves up an excellent dog... just not quite as good as when Woody and Marie were the proprietors.

Haha, I'm sure that was probably part of it as well. Just an all around experience at King Cole.

And I thought of this after posting, how could I forget - my introduction to Birch Beer! A true roadside oasis.

Don't forget Tepper's. (They were my Little League team sponsors ("Tepper's Tigers" 😁 ).

Galloping Hill Inn (old timers know it as Peterson’s) in Union County and Hiram’s in Bergen County. Goffle Grill just OK now and Rutt’s overrated. Johnny & Hanges is always good.

Also my old co-worker is best friends with the family that owns Thumann’s. I believe he told me Rutt’s uses Thumann’s.

What year did you move out Bus? My grandfather used to own a candy story there, but sold it after the big flood sometime in the 70's I believe

I don't order them out alot so can't make many comparisons

Living within minutes of Rutts hut and Hot Grill, both in Clifton, I prefer the all the way, chili sauce with onions, at Hot Grill.
You don't get a comparable dog at Rutts with toppings, but people love the relish there

Many might not know, Rutts is considered the best hot dog place in the country by some media comparisons,
the MSN webpage for example routinely has Rutts the best nationwide

I miss Syd’s , originally on Chancellor Ave in Newark, and then Vauxhall Road in Millburn. They used Newark based Best Provisions hot dogs. Indeed, they were the best. NJ is blessed with some great hot dog outlets. I love a double at Jimmy Buffs.

Indeed, Syd's were excellent! When I worked in New Providence, I'd make the trek to Millburn for lunch every so often for a couple of Syd's dogs.
