And another fairly new favorite from veteran indie rockers The National. They always seem to deliver some very good songs...

I was an absolute U2 disciple from 1980 through about 1990, but especially through about 1985. I used to make the undergrads in the chem E lab listen to U2 in the early/mid 80s, as well as friends (before Joshua Tree's massive success) and people would look at me funny when I said they're going to be the biggest band ever (was saying this since about 82). If only I could've bought stock in them somehow, I'd be fabulously wealthy, lol. Saw them about 7-8 times pre-1984, including their first US tour in 1980. Still liked their post 1990 work, but was never a nut for them after that. Their first 3 albums were my favorite (Boy being my U2 favorite and top 5-10 alltime for me) and Ioved 4/5 too (Unforgettable Fire/Joshua Tree). I can kind of take or leave their work since 2000.

Actung Baby was a big album for me in my senior year at Ru. So great that they persevered while grunge was taking hold. They deserve alot of credit for making the right shift in their music to prepare themselves for the 90s. Zooropa and Discotheque more so the former were some nice experimental releases. I enjoyed both.

Unfortunately All That You Can Leave Behind saw them becoming boring and safe. It wouldnt be so bad but their following releases were more of the same and by 2008 I had given up on paying attention so I wouldnt even know if they released a couple decent songs in the last 15 years

Something for those that skipped morning coffee and need to peel the paint off their ceiling. Johnny Booth from Long Island. Can't explain the attraction. I like chaos. Must be my late mid life crisis kicking in. @Jm0513 - this ain't easy listening. @RutHut

i don't know what you're talking about. this is easy listening, unwind from a long day of work music.(i'm not kidding either. i have several playlists like this that i'll unwind to after work) i like it. that breakdown is heavy as.

That music added 20 lbs to my bench press. Great to chop firewood to too. Very motivational.

You're angry, but it's a good angry.
Sort of. I get it out of my system and don't take it out on others (99% of the time). I'm well-adjusted. 🤣 This scene in Dumb and Dumber always makes me LOL.

BTW-I don’t only
listen to Lana Del Rey. I was the chick who wanted This Love by Pantera played at her wedding.

Played the clip for my son and he called this "much lighter and more melodic" than the really hard, heavy stuff he listens to when he's working out. He did like this though.

Johnny Booth from Long Island have been around since 2008. They only recently showed up in my feeds. Not everyday music, but good for certain times of day.

There are these things called melody and harmonized sound. There was a time when heavy rock incorporated it.

Are you familiar with Mathcore or math rock? It's a genre. Johnny Booth is mathcore. Opera is a genre that repulses me. Same with most hee-haw type of country music. Different strokes for different folks.

I can see how it would immediately turn someone off who enjoys melody and harmonies. I don't love it, but for the right move, it is a nice release. It's my drug of choice. I don't drink, smoke or do any drugs. Never have. A lot of mathcore and punk bands and kids in the scene are straight edge and don't do drugs or drink.

"a subgenre of hardcore punk and metalcore influenced by post-hardcore, extreme metal and math rock that developed during the 1990s. Bands in the genre emphasize complex and fluctuant rhythms through the use of irregular time signatures, polymeters, syncopations and tempo changes."

It has been described as having emphasis on technical complexity as "the means by which" they attain the aggressiveness of punk, "but never the end unto itself", distinguishing it from "the overflowing excess" of progressive metal.

Let me start with that personally I like you and thank you for starting some of these music threads. What you are referencing above are not “genres” of music. They are sub genres. They are essentially under the “rock” genre. The difference is that much of it is has higher volume and distortion which are products of technology not musical acumen. Playing “fast” and loud in of itself doesn’t make it “good”. Screaming is not singing. It seems the thing people gravitate toward is the “attitude”. Whatever. I’m 65 and I’ve heard a ton of music in my life. Not all music is good, whether it is shallow pop culture music or loud, distorted heavy rock with zero melody or harmony. You are correct, to each his own.

I like you to, so fist bump to you. As I was mowing the lawn before dark, I was thinking about my post and if it was too harsh, and I though oh, snap, it's a sub-genre. I agree with you on the screaming (some call them guttural vocals, I call them Cookie Monster vocals).

It's funny, I never considered the Sex Pistols of The Ramones "good" musicians. But their attitude made them "good" and fun bands, especially live, although I never got to see either band live, you could see it in their performances. There is something about a frenetic, hard driving show that is a draw to a lot of people. I noted my dislike for a lot of country music, and I feel the same about a lot of folk music too, with exceptions for Bob Dylan's acoustic material and Woodie Guthrie.

Anyway, this has been a good thread, and there is room for everything here.

How about palying fast and loud being good... with screams? Plenty of musical acumen in what this band does.

My comment about loud and fast doesn’t apply to all Heavy Metal music. I know there are many talented musicians especially in the “Progressive Metal” sub genre. These guys have practiced a lot. Just not my cup of tea. I’m definitely from the less is more musical tree.

First new Gaslight Anthem in 9 years:

Been a big Gaslight Anthem fan since their first album and thought 59 Sound was one of the best albums of the 2000s, but haven't been that impressed by their later albums and this song, unfortunately, doesn't do it for me. Maybe the rest of the new album will be better.

If you like retro soul (I do, when done well), take a listen to Thee Sacred Souls new song Love Is the Way, which came out late last year, but which is now getting some serious airplay. The singer reminds me a fair amount of Marvin Gaye, which is definitely a compliment.
