Painful Michigan trivia

When Michigan made mistake after mistake late in the Elite Eight game with UCLA that the Wolverines lost, 51-49, my mind went back to the famous 1993 mistake made by the Michigan Fab Five team that included current Michigan Coach Juwan Howard, Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson.

In the 1993 March Madness North Carolina led 73-71 when Webber, Michigan's All-American sophomore forward, rebounded Pat Sullivan's missed free throw with 19 seconds left.

And called a timeout with 11 seconds left. Unfortunately, Michigan had NO timeouts left so it was a technical.

Michigan lost possession and the Tarheels’ Donald Williams hit two free throws after the technical and another two after a foul, wrapping up the Tar Heels' 77-71 victory in the Superdome in New Orleans.

Four Fab Five members had their records removed because they committed NCAA rules violations.

Howard was clean. He records remain.

Sometimes Michigan shoots itself in the foot . . . as in 1993 and in 2021.

Much different than shooting itself in the foot.

YEAH, I FELT TERRIBLE FOR CHRIS WEBBER WHEN HE REALIZED HIS ERROR FOR CALLING THE TIMEOUT THAT MICHIGAN DIDN'T HAVE. I ALWAYS FEEL EMPATHY FOR THE PLAYER WHO MISSES A POTENTIAL GAME-WINNING SHOT OR MAKES AN ERROR AT THE END THAT EVERYONE POINTS AS "THE REASON" HIS TEAM LOST. THEY TRY. THEY'RE YOUNG AND STILL IMMATURE. BUT IT HURTS THEM MORE THAN IT DOES US.
