His numbers made me think of Angel. Angel developed a nice offensive game; Payne is a better defender and shot blocker.
Only downside might be fewer minutes than expected for Hines. He is still a stud and our future. Have to keep him happy and eager/willing to return.

On the season he's 17th in OR%, 62nd in DR% nationally.

Granted he's been good offensive rebounder in his career, which Sha saw.

Don’t make the comparison. It’s not even close to compare Angel and Payne

He was awesome offensively and on the glass, but Ben Gold gave him problems on D. Something to think about when we face other teams with stretch 5s (X and Creighton).

THat's why you will almost never see Hines and Payne in the game at the same time.

Maybe in a very special situation. But even then doubtful.
Last night would’ve been a good time to try it in the second half. We were okay positioned from the foul perspective to give it a shot while they kept scoring at the hoop.

Plus 3 more blocks. If he was a little better finisher, he'd be a terror.

Pirates got some big contributions from the end of the bench which helped big time as Fisher and Williams couldn't get it going and AJ was shutout in 2nd half.

8 big points for Parker including the 3 big Free throws & 8 from Rivera.
Rivera seems to be starting to find his way. He’s looked much better the last 2 games.

His form is exemplary except for the fact that he raises his shooting hand above his sight line.

That's a no no.

I feel pretty good with Fisher and Rivera at the four. Both play bigger than they are. Dar not showing much and Suemnick has gone into witness protection. Would it be possible for Pat to choose to take a medical redshirt to give himself another season here or somewhere else?

He would need an NCAA to approve a waiver for him since this is already the 6th year of his college clock. But could be possible. He committed here before Hines when there was an opportunity for minutes. Hines+him missing time. No chance he sees the court

I would have thought he would get more time at the 4, given how small we are there.

We all can see how valuable Payne has been to the Pirates this season. He was very good in the OOC and has raised his game up a notch in Big East play while Hines has been out/limited. In the 3 league games he's averaging 12 points & 16 rebounds with Zero Turnovers in 31.7 Minutes per game. Great numbers and its a continuation of what he's done all season.

He's been amazingly efficient and productive and it shows in a lot of the advanced efficiency stats. Here are some numbers for the season and where he ranks among all Big East players.

He's Top 5 in the Big East in all of the following categories including #1 in Sports Reference's Player Efficiency Rating - PER:

Player Efficiency Rating PER 25.6 (1st)
Win Shares 1.9 (5th)
Win Shares per 40 Minutes .253 (1st)
Defensive Rating 88.0 (1st)
Rebounds per Game 7.9 (3rd)
Rebound % 20.8% (2nd) (17th Nation)
Offensive Rebounds 46 (3rd)
Offensive Rebound %17.3% (2nd) (14th Nation)
Defensive Rebounds 64 (5th)
Defensive Rebound % 24.5% (4th)
Blocks per Game 1.6 (4th)
Block Rate 10.1% (2nd) (19th Nation)
Turnover Rate 6.1% (3rd)

Also
2-pt FG% 60.2% (12th)
Steal Rate 2.7% (16th)

Excellent article by Jerry and on target. For this one game against Creighton Payne played poorly. It happens, but I also noticed he got lazy at times, especially getting back on defense. It hasn't happen much this year but the words from his past coach were telling. He needs to be pushed to play his best and it being a long season this one game showed the holes in his game, lack of intensity.

I expect when he sees the tape he'll see why he played so poorly and come back more intense Saturday. You learn more from your mistakes than you do from your successes. The tape doesn't lie. Payne did not play well Sunday.

Agreed. We were fortunate that Hines was back at full or near full strength and played a great game.

Its crazy how u gotta push a player making high 6 figures at least, and when ur team is on the verge of the top 25

Not crazy at all. It's a long season. These kids have been playing basketball. spring, summer, fall and winter. No one can give 100% effort all the time. But some athletes need a bigger push than others. It's human nature. Payne plays a position that none of have any idea how physically taxing it can be. Pounding game after game against other bigs is difficult. For this one game Payne didn't play with the intensity hoped for. He'll learn and I'm sure it will show Saturday.
