He’s been a pleasant surprise the first 5 games against inferior competition. The past 2 games he has not been able to keep up. Hoping Hines will be inserted into the starting lineup sooner rather than later. By January, will Godswil be the backup or Payne?

Hines gives us a lot more overall than Payne IMO, but Payne is a good player to have and is a slightly better defender than Hines at this point, I think. Payne also looks more athletic than Godswill.

Nice problem to have!

Godswill seems much longer term. Is he even practicing yet?

IMHO, Payne held up pretty well in Maui. Like Hines coming in against the second squad, for now.

I guess you guys have not picked up that Payne is playing with an injured hand? Given that he has been playing and not 100% I give him a ton of credit.

I think Holloway is right on with his starting ineup.

In the preseason I was told that our best player was Simpkins and in the Blue/White scrimmage that played out. But I was also told, and posted on the Trove, that Williams was really playing well the last couple of weeks in workouts. Still I was surprised that Simpsons was coming off the bench. But now watching the games I feel Holloway nailed it. I love Simpkins coming off the bench and providing instant offense along with his overall game. And he's playing starting minutes as well.

Payne starting was the right move too. Starting Hines would probably get him instant foul trouble. This way he comes off the bench after seeing how the flow of the game is progressing and might be a little less inclined to pick up too many fouls.

As for Williams, need I say more. He has earned starting minutes with his play on both sides of the ball.

And now that the 5 man mass substitutions are no longer happening...kudos to Sha for how he is managing the rotations.

With a solid 9 man rotation set, how much deeper into the season do we go before beginning to consider redshirting Godswill and or Suemnick?

Haven’t heard any updates on their return and they then would have to get into playing shape.
If we stay injury free will either play much anyway?

With losing Payne, Fisher and Dar after this season we could save Pat to play the 4. I know Godswill has 3 years left but we would then have him and Hines as a 2 headed center for 3 years.

I totally understand that everything is year to year now with all the players. Just spitballing.

Hall84,

Redshirting should never happen in the P2P era, UNLESS it is a season ending injury. They are being compensated to play and we DEFINITELY need Godswell back as soon as he is cleared. Same for Mr. S.

Agreed. Besides you are paying them already for this season. So short of a season ending injury you do not redshirt unless they can only can come back very late in the season and they can be serviceable next season.

Agree. Redshirting is headed the way of the Dodo Bird.

Love to have them both back for depth and rebounding asap.
Like I said just spitballing as to where the line would be to make it worthwhile. Another month? 2 months?

Hines definitely has enticing potential but we need them both as neither can be relied on to be a consistent 30-man player in the BE yet. Payne starting is the way to go right now. Their stats on the year are nearly identical with Hines getting more blocks but Payne getting a lot more steals. They are both impactful players but one of our weak points that could be exploited more is how much they foul. Payne is averaging 6.1 fouls per 40 minutes and Hines is at 5.4.

We really could use something from Suemnick or Godswill since we don't have physical 4s. We've tried to go small when Payne and Hines are both in foul trouble and it doesn't work. Fisher, Rivera and Dar are really all 3's so we lose a lot rebounding and defensively going small.

This. We gave Sha a lot of well earned crap for some past lineups, but the rotation sets up well now.

Simpkins is SHU’s version of the microwave.

If it ain’t broke? Hines getting 20 mpg and developing each game. Building confidence and making plays. He may start later in the season, but at this point leave things the way they are.
As for Williams, need I say more. He has earned starting minutes with his play on both sides of the ball.
Normally, change of scenery is not a cure all, but Williams is proving that theory wrong. He was highly recruited out of high school and had a decent freshman year at LSU. Love his game on both ends.

20 minutes a game for Hines is under utilized. We have a potential ONE AND DONE NBA big and you guys are celebrating like his 18 minutes a game and 6 points is effective usage and development of his game. If he goes in the portal, it’ll have less to do with money than it does with a school that will better utilize and game plan around him

Hines is nursing a groin injury and the team just played 3 games in 3 days. I think Hines will get as many minutes as his play and talent justify. Making predictions about keeping him due to playing time after 8 games, seems to be premature.

Payne fouls more than Hines lol and he’s a senior to a freshman. I’d start Hines immediately.

We need to make feeding Hines the ball in the post a priority more and getting opponents in foul trouble like Musselman did with Ausar against us

Ausar has been among the very best in minor league basketball at drawing fouls over his entire career.
