Run Offense Not Just From Point

Been watching how teams take us out of games by letting Budd be the man. Love his game, but the best offenses need to be multi-faceted and not always dependent on the PG.

PJ - I'm dating myself - made this a staple by letting Gaze and Morton start offense at the wings. We need better spacing, variety, etc. and then better shooting will follow. We have good shooters, but spacing is so poor it turns them into rushed, poor shooters. Way too dependent on Budd starting the offense. Can be heavily dependent on Budd, but not every possession.

The triangle offense is considered one of the best systems that doesn’t rely heavily on a single point guard. It spreads playmaking responsibilities across multiple positions, emphasizing spacing, ball movement, and reads rather than traditional point guard initiation.

Apparently Willard abandoned this traditional PG approach when he went to Nova - I read this in a previous media pre-game post from a major media site.

Tonight Willard made Budd be the shooter, and this has failed us 2x vs. Nova. Budd is amazing, but we need 3s and a more fluid offense like we saw in Maui.

Our defense is so damn good, offense needs to catch up and soon or another NIT.

Budd is amazing, but hoping the coaching staff can figure something out to create a more fluid, less PG dependent offense. I'm no expert, just the eye test and a little basketball knowledge tells me that our offensive sets and spacing are not making it easy for our shooters. Mike, McCray and Simpkins deserve more wide open 3s.

It's easy to say we are poor 3 point shooters, it's more than that - spacing, ball movement, inconsistent inside game, is a huge factor.

While I understand your points, I do think that we’ve played two of our worst games guarding the 3 point line against Nova.

Also, I remember well the Final Four team and while they may have had better spacing…they simply had much better talent.

Willard was always good at scheming defense, and against a vanilla offensive team like us, we simply make that a much easier task.

i love Budd…but would love him more if we gave him some true 3 point shooters.

let’s face it; with our budget, we are a 6-11 team in the conference; we need to be able to pay for talent at key positions, or we are destined for mediocrity.

Idk what game you watched, but we had some wide open shots. We just can’t shoot. I didn’t think it was anything their defense did
Watched the same game, and our offense all year. Bottom of the Big East. Need to
adjust and it's not just players not making 3s.

Spacing sucks, and that makes for poor shooting. That's why our offense is at the bottom of conference. Nova's is more read the defense, Willard ditched his old offense, rigid & bring it back to PG, and now uses more free-flowing scheme that reads defense.

If we had Jalen Brunson and his supporting cast at the Knicks, no problem. Still would take the triangle offense any day.

Sha needs to employ an occasional zone. Won us a game at Marquette. It helps take the penetration and drive and dish away, and you can reduce the 3. Not to mention protecting players with fouls.

Willard always had the zone in his bag of tricks at Seton Hall. Surprised Sha is so reluctant to dust it off occasionally.

You lost credibility when you said we have good shooters.

Not a single player on this roster has proven over their college careers to be good shooters. The stats are clear as day about that.

Just because it looks like they have good form doesn’t mean they are good shooters.

You are correct as we not only don't make 3 pointers, we don't make 2 pointers!

Last thing you want to do is go zone against a team that makes 3 pointers. That is just about every team in the BE not SHU. Inviting disaster.

Anyone think Middleton would've been a good fit on this team? Guy had decent perimeter shooting. I would've taken him over Williams who has done nothing but hog the ball.

No. He’s too limited and really hasn’t progressed despite playing in a lower league. The other two shooters we were looking at (Kobe Magee and Chris Bell) aren’t any good either.

Barrington Hargress would have helped.

It could be better, but it's not that bad and it's not the primary problem. We get a lot of open, unrushed shots. Even last night. The problem is that our team cannot shoot. Like, at all.

Then again, their career statistics coming into the season suggested they could not shoot, so us hoping they could shoot better is just pissing into the wind.

We also take too many mid range shots. We took 18 last night. That’s fine for Budd, who shoots them great but AJ, TJ, and Mike are a brick from that range. They all shoot under 30% on middies. They should attempt zero of them.

True. The payoff is not worth the poor likelihood of them even falling.

Our spacing has sucked all year..both inside & out. I can't tell you how many times we've kicked into the low post & one of our guys simultaneously cuts to the basket inviting the double team.

It’s way worse in BE play. There’s a reason for that. Idk what we can do except shake it up with lineups and game flow.

When any of our 4 guards drive to the basket they are usually met by bigger talented players. Size matters in porn and hoops. Of course I know nothing about porn. Some of you will respond that I know nothing about hoops too, You could be right on both counts.
