Continuing with our BB questions. Most are predicting a last place finish for the Pirates in the Big East.

Today's question....which team do you believe will finish last in the regular season?

My money is on Xavier.

I’d go with Butler.

X lost a ton and already having injury issues I read, where they’ve been snake bitten it seems the past few years. But I think Little Rick can coach and they usually have a strong home court environment.

We will be the consensus choice for Last as most preseason predictive models have us rated outside of the top 100. But the BE is weak outside the top 3 with a lot of new players and I see a fairly interchangeable tier of teams that could be in the 5th through 11th positions.

These teams are likely to beat up on each other preventing any from getting to the NCAAs. I'll take Butler in last.

St.Johns
UConn

Creighton

Marquette

Georgetown
Providence
Seton Hall
DePaul
Villanova
Xavier
Butler

Not understanding your question Halldan. What do you mean by regular season? All games BE and out of conference?

I pick SHU last in the BE and last including all games.

I know news is light during the summer, but this is a depressing topic. “Who is possibly worse than us?”

Regular season as opposed to the Big East Tournament

There are some possibilities. Never know how kids who never played together will jell and then there are injuries. So it is possible that we could finish higher than last if some of the other BE teams go south and we play better than expected. I just don't know how this coming season is going to shake out with so many unknowns. I actually felt more optimistic about last year's team and we all know how that went.

Very possible as all 4 teams have almost entirely new rosters and 2 have new HCs. Also none of them necessarily cleaned up in the Transfer portal.

Xavier returns Zero players and Zero coaches. Butler returns 1 player (Finley Bizjack) and Matta has not done well in the BE. Sha returns only 2 little-used Freshmen from last years debacle. Willard has a mostly brand new group. All 4 will have growing pains.

DePaul, Georgetown and Providence don't look great either. But DePaul returns 3 starters from a team that showed improvement last year. GTown returns Malik Mack and most of their Portal additions are experienced players from P5 schools. Providence also adds several HM transfers and have 4-5 returnees who will step into bigger roles.

Agreed. I keep thinking I'm missing something on Nova. The last few years it was pretty easy on paper to see why folks were high on them, because 2 years ago they brought in what seemed like a monster portal class, and last year they returned the preseason POY favorite and supplemented with experienced, proven high major returnees + a few intriguing portal adds. I know the Lewis kid is supposed to be legit as a PG off-the-bat and that Willard brought in or kept a number of shooters around him, but it seems many of the preseason polls are higher on the Cats than me. Part of that could also be that Willard is a proven solid coach and Nova still has the status that goes with being a quasi blue blood.

Ugh is this what we are reduced to? We will not finish in last place this year.

My money is on Butler and will finish in 7th place.

If I’m giving my pre season prediction 1 through 11 I would put the pirates last. However, from a betting perspective if I’m given the option of pirates vs the field to finish last I would take the field.

Agreed. I would put good money on us versus the field for last place. In fact, when I'm out of NJ later this week I'm going to see if there is a way I can make that bet, lol. Maybe I'm a blind optimist, although I certainly don't think I am by any stretch.

I think there are enough teams similar to us talent-wise and I'm betting on Sha to have a bounce back season from a coaching perspective. He was SO bad last year in every way, I think he'll overachieve a little with this group. I also believe having a quality PG is vital in college and Budd will do a lot for us. I think the max for us is 6th and worse case is last with 8th or 9th the most likely.

if i had to bet i say hall. while the returning basement dwellers have turned over the entirety of the roster, their replacements are all bad players from bad teams in bad conferences so i can't confidentially say it will be any different

I found this:

Based on early projections and analysis:
UConn, Creighton, and St. John's are projected to have "Elite aggressive" non-conference schedules. Marquette's schedule is considered above average, while Georgetown's is rated average to above average. Butler, Providence, Seton Hall, Villanova, and Xavier are categorized as having "Average" schedules. Villanova's schedule includes their Philadelphia Big 5 MTE with all three projected Q1 games away or at neutral sites. Providence's postseason chances are heavily dependent on their performance in the Rady Children's Invitational and a road game at Colorado. DePaul is projected to have the "Weakest" non-conference schedule in the Big East.
