Brown gave his first Spring ball interview for the year. Out of all the questions asked, none of them have been discussed as much as the potential of a QB competition between Doege & Greene.

I honestly watched a 26min interview without a single question asked about Garrett Greene's development/improvement/progress. I understand Brown is not going to say much atm, but there is a way to ask a question to gain insight into the frame of mind.

Instead of asking "Do you have a QB competition and if so, whos winning?" Ask it like this:

"Coach, we understand the diverse skillset Garrett Greene offers, how has his understanding of the offense, accuracy, or timing with the WR's development through the winter? How has his winter conditioning or offseason training gone, do you see significant progress, or what areas do you think he still needs to improve?"

I seriously cannot believe we watched a 26 min video, without a single, possibly the most significant question thats been on the mind of WVians this offseason. Not that other players or positions are not important to us, because they are, but my lord guys #READTHEROOM #KNOWYOURAUDIENCE

His frame of mind is correct...

QB play is a reflection of OLine play and the run game.

So he is needing a step up in OL play and add more depth at the RB position.
Look at the recruiting this last cycle. OL and 2 RBs.

Inserting another QB isn't going to make things better unless it is a QB who is an absolute beast.

From year 1 to year 2 there was improvement.

Like what a few people said at the beginning of last season...
If they can get the ball downfield to the WRs the offense can be explosive.

They never could consistently. Against quality DL WVU went with short routes to get rid of the ball quick.
They couldn't dominate the LOS enough with the run game to move the ball consistently as well.

From what you have seen from 2019 to 2020 I would guess there will be an improvement in 2021.

Still going to be extremely difficult to be able to put up 30+ points on the great defenses....

That might take until 2022

There is no doubt that OL play & scheme versatility will make a significant impact on QB play, and I definitely agree we should be a bit better on the OL this year, we have the talent, but these guys are still very young, so OL play should continue to improve in the coming years... We ran a pretty healthy amount of RPO's last year, but Doege is not a run threat, so defenses dont honor it. Greene has a more diverse skillset that may help alleviate some of the OL deficiencies by keeping opposing defenses honest with QB reads and other option style schemes. This also offers more scheme versatility, ( ie less predictability), so while he may be young, and maybe his arm isnt quite as accurate(YET), the diversity of his skillset may overcome lacking in other areas. That said, you dont make the Elite 11 without having a decent arm, and id much rather Greene start early to work out the jitters and find his rhythm early on, which will increase his upside, for when the 2020 & 2021 are upperclassmen.

Thats why this offseason was absolutely critical in his physical & mental development, Im in awe that not a single question was asked about it. Not everyone is a Pat White or Trevor Lawrence, most Qbs need 6-10 games before they truly find the ability to "Lead an offense", esp in critical moments. It would be better for team's upside if he gets in there sooner.

The addition of Nester will definitely help, but Frazier, White, Wyatt, Rimac, Mayo, Moorer, Beaver, & Yates are still underclassmen, so they are far from obtaining their "peak"... Football is a perfect reflection of symbiosis, by the time these OL players are closer to their peak, id prefer Greene already have a year or two under his belt as a starting QB. This would nurture more positive play from them as a unit, then playing Doege for another year in hopes maybe we win 1 more game or so with him at the helm. IT could be perceived as a short term vs long term perspective... Thats assuming Greene's arm isnt quite as good as Doege's though, which that could very well be inaccurate. Im not knocking Doege, not at all, I greatly appreciate all his hard work & dedication to our program, but an honest assessment of his skillset & peak, I dont think its high enough to take us where we want to be even under optimal circumstances. However, GG's could be, if he continues to develop as a passer & leader. His skillset is there to allow for a less predictable offense. We'll have to see, that'll be something we'll probably be able to tell after his 6th game or so... Time will tell...

Any rate, Im glad they get a spring practice though, that should help the younger players develop a bit more to compete in fall camp. As always with youthful teams, nothing solves the typical issues but time & development. A painfully slow process to fans who are not known to be patient.

Possibly.
The coaches have a better understanding of where both QBs are at. You will probably get to see in the spring game yourself. Wait until you actually see Greene before forming opinions.

People have an understanding of what to ask Brown.
Truthfully the Recruiting to me is a major question. Tough for WVU because of how Neal Brown recruits and the distance.
His staff likes to have the recruits around campus

Those covering Mountaineer are for the most part pussies- afraid to ask tough questions for fear of losing access or losing press credentials.

That's because it was asked about the first interview a few weeks ago and he detailed the situation perfectly. We even had articles about it here.

GOOD POINTS. BUT GETTING THE BALL DOWNFIELD TO THE WIDE RECEIVERS ALSO MEANS THE WRs HAVE TO CATCH THE DAMN BALL. DROPPED PASSES ARE AS BIG A PROBLEM AS ERRANT THROWS, WHICH OBVIOUSLY WERE AFFECTED BY THE OL NOT KEEPING THE QB UPRIGHT DURING PASS PLAYS. STILLS BROTHERS DEFENSE HELPED OFFSET THE IMPACT OF THE DROPPED PASSES AND ERRANT THROWS LAST SEASON. OBVIOUSLY, FEWER DROPPED PASSES, FEWER ERRANT THROWS AND STILLS BROTHERS-LIKE DEFENSE MAKE FOR A TERRIFIC TRIUMVIRATE. AS USUAL, I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE BORING BASEBALL SEASON TO END SO I CAN WATCH MY ALMA MATER PLAY IN MOUNTAINEER FIELD FROM MY SECTION 105 SEATS.
