I recently learned that Starkville has a "pimp" (what the students call him) An older black gentlemen who wears a three piece suit, fedora, white shoes and walks with a cane. Starkville also has the young heavyset man who works in the district and wears the Starkville Yellowjacket gear (I can't think of his name, but everyone knows him). I also remember the older white man with long stringy hair (maybe missing some teeth?) who hung around tailgates and town. I can't remember his name, I think he died 10 or more years ago. What other city characters do we have? Petty may be one, but I really didn't interact with him.

If you were at state in the late 90s/early 2000’s - there was a young black kid who was a big ol boy. His mom worked for the university in some capacity. His name was OG(initials). He would just roam campus and he was always at the basketball games. I think he passed away in his late teens.

Gerold was the older guy's name I believe. Always would sit at the Bin

He was a photographer, even taught a class on campus at one time I believe. Dan Camp always let him hang out in the District, let him crash at empty houses or apartments when he had them, otherwise he mooched off of friends. He was NEVER shy to ask you to buy him a beer. There's a "monument" to him across the street from 2 Bros and The Bin with a picture of him on it. He was harmless

Funny Gerald story. I was in the military stationed in Germany back in the late 90s early 2000s. My brother was also a fixture in Starkville back in those days. I bought my brother one of those Brookstone Beer In a Bag things for Christmas, mainly as a joke. They hung it in their closet for the requisite time and had a big party once it was ready. I asked how it went. He said "the beer was disgusting, the only person who would drink it was Gerald".

Jerimiah spends a lot of time in the district, wanders between the restaurant's who always feed him. He used to also always travel with Starkville High athletics as sort of their version of Radio. He's a fun guy to visit and always seems to remember everyone, even those of us from out of town. Speak to him if you ever get the chance.

The Peeping Pimp, he served a little time in jail a few years ago for peeping and jerking.

He taught photography at State. I took his class one year with Mario Haggan and that skinny white 7'0 basketball player Wesley something or another.

This was at the turn of the century and digital cameras were just becoming attainable. I used film though, because it was much better. We'd develop our film and scan the negatives in this little holder that would go in the scanner. Gerald would lean down real close to get the negative in the holder and clamp his beard into it every damn time.

Good dude, definitely a narcoleptic and a barfly of the 10th order.

Wesley Morgan. I took public speaking with Wesley. Fun fact, his parents and siblings are all short.

Was in school in late 90s/early 00s. Gerald (long grey hair and beard) was always in the district. I believe he had narcolepsy. That or he just passed out at bars a lot. He taught photography at State for a while.

Pickle was always around too. I believe he worked at Rick's for a few years. He passed away about 7 years ago.

There was also another character in the district. He lived in the white house across the street from St. Joseph's church. He would always just stand out by the sidewalk starring at everyone who walked buy. He was seemingly always out there. Hours per day. He has since died and at one point there was a plaque honoring his memory out by the sidewalk.

Currently, Jeremiah is a staple in the district and he LOVES to talk about Starkville High football.

Who was the skinny white guy in the late 90s with the dark big bushy mustache and shaggy Will Byers haircut that you'd see walking everywhere and talking to himself?

Bernard the Shoe Shine Man was quite the character. Blind in one eye and deaf in the opposite ear, he'd turn his head one way to look at you and the opposite way to hear you.

"Shoe Shine man on duty!"
Heard someone ask him if he had change for a $20. His response: "If I had change for a $20, do you think I'd be here shining your got damn shoes?!"

Jeremiah is the unofficial AD at Starkville HS and "Head Coach" of every sport. He eats and sleeps Starkville HS athletics. They've given him multiple State Championship Rings over the years.
The last I heard he lives in an apartment with his mom. He catches rides with anybody and everybody because most everybody knows him. In the District he sweeps front entry areas, empty trash cans, whatever anybody asks him to do. He's almost always in The District later at night because the restaurants give him food at closing time and he takes it home for him and his mom. I've got a friend that's a cop that takes him home at night if he's working late shift. He can be intimidating (he's huge) and he loves hugging the ladies but he's completely harmless.

Gerald worked in the Communications Dept. I was pretty good friends with Bob Arnett, a film professor, through the mid 90s. Bob and Gerald were old Grill regulars and friendly.

In Bob's film class we watched 2001: A Space Odyssey. Gerald sat in the back, grumbling comments here and there that were lighthearted but mostly incoherent. When we turned on the lights after that long sequence with the monolith lightshow and the movie ended, Gerald was snoring in the back, head down on the desk. I never thought of him as narcoleptic. I just assumed he was always buzzed and drowsy.

I used to fall asleep in class a lot. Turns out I had undiagnosed and untreated sleep apnea, to the point I almost died every night.

He was a narco. He also NEVER asked me to buy him a beer. I always offered. Loved me some Gerald

Jeremiah was getting his start at being a staple of the cotton district when I was there in late 2000s. At that time, he'd frequently set up shop at a standing table upstairs in Mugshots with a laptop, some headphones, and he'd play like he was the DJ.

I didn’t remember OG died, but now I’m thinking we may have had a thread on here about it years back. I didn’t know OG were his actual initials. I thought he called himself that because he’d been hanging around campus his whole life.
