He was a photographer, even taught a class on campus at one time I believe. Dan Camp always let him hang out in the District, let him crash at empty houses or apartments when he had them, otherwise he mooched off of friends. He was NEVER shy to ask you to buy him a beer. There's a "monument" to him across the street from 2 Bros and The Bin with a picture of him on it. He was harmless
He was also a narcoleptic if I remember correctly.

Jeremiah was getting his start at being a staple of the cotton district when I was there in late 2000s. At that time, he'd frequently set up shop at a standing table upstairs in Mugshots with a laptop, some headphones, and he'd play like he was the DJ.
For awhile back during the Vic Schaefer era Jeremiah would set up in the Hump down right next to the student section w/ his laptop and headphones and pretend he was the DJ playing music during time outs. He also used to go to Cowbells and do it there, never playing music but fantasizing I guess.............

Bernard the Shoe Shine Man was quite the character. Blind in one eye and deaf in the opposite ear, he'd turn his head one way to look at you and the opposite way to hear you.

"Shoe Shine man on duty!"
Bernard was the first one I thought of when I read the OP. That sumbitch would come into the fraternity house at 6 am after a party the night before yelling "SHOE SHINE MAN", then multiple people would inevitably yell back "SHUT THE 17 UP BERNARD"

It's funny what simple stuff you can think of now as fond memories. This older black seemingly homeless guy with a wandering eye and loud mouth just walked into our (always unlocked) house all the time and we thought it was hilarious and great.

He was a narco. He also NEVER asked me to buy him a beer. I always offered. Loved me some Gerald
He never worked when I knew him, hence, bumming beers. I was working but just passing through Starkville every few weeks back then and always saw him at Flo & Eddies. He never once remembered my name, never, but always would wander over and sit down and start talking. Next time I would order another beer he'd always say "make it 2" . I think he knew I had an expense account too so probably why he wasn't shy about asking

I recently learned that Starkville has a "pimp" (what the students call him) An older black gentlemen who wears a three piece suit, fedora, white shoes and walks with a cane. Starkville also has the young heavyset man who works in the district and wears the Starkville Yellowjacket gear (I can't think of his name, but everyone knows him). I also remember the older white man with long stringy hair (maybe missing some teeth?) who hung around tailgates and town. I can't remember his name, I think he died 10 or more years ago. What other city characters do we have? Petty may be one, but I really didn't interact with him.
I think I've mentioned him before, but who here remembers "Neal"? That's basically all I ever knew was his first name, but he was down on the floor at every home basketball game walking around and cheering. He was a larger guy (SPS honorary poster if he's not on here), wore glasses or goggles, and maybe a headband... Everyone knew him and yelled out his name when we saw him anywhere.

My best memory of Neal was he somehow got into a footrace with the giant Quincy's Yeast Roll mascot at one of the games. I can see them running in what seemed like slow motion, like Rocky and Apollo on the beach, as clear as day in my mind. I have no idea who won, but it was glorious. Surely some of you were there.

Yes. Gerald. Big black guy is Jermiah. The pin is just t

Gerold was the older guy's name I believe. Always would sit at the Bin
Gerald would pass out/ go to sleep back in the pool room area of Cheers on the regular. We would just work around him till time to close and then he would ride his bicycle home. Always a nice guy though.

Agreed! Fiji was Bernard’s favorite fraternity. I’m sure it was merely a coincidence that he told me this in the Fiji house, while I was paying him for his services.

There was a guy around Starkville mid 2000’s, he drove a maroon PT cruiser that had banner M stickers ALL OVER IT. Usually wore a suit, hair was black as shoe polish and usually slicked back. He’d come up to you out in public and say something like “How bout them bulldogs, amen?” I can’t be the only person that remembers that guy.

Gerald was a narcoleptic and suffered from insomnia. Crazy mix. I worked at Flos for 5 years and he would almost fight someone if they were in his seat at the bar. Wasn’t the nicest guy but never bothered me. Slept a many a nights on the bar

Since we are rolling with nostalgia...

What about MstateJmack or whatever with the minivan with all the stickers and magnets?

@dawgstudent did that thread make it to the SPS Remembers pantheon?

The guy at the baseball games?
Candy Man is still around or was at least last baseball season. He's had some health issues getting around but still brings that big grocery bag full of candy to every game for the kids. He was on crutches for awhile last season I believe but apparently recovered because I saw him later limping but no crutches. He hangs out w/ the LFL Lizards if you want to take the kids by for candy.

Anyone remember the Spivey twins (Keith and Kevin), late 90s, early 00s? Keith had one leg, I think from a motorcycle accident. Both dudes hung out at Dave’s or Flo & Eddys almost every night. I played in a band with Keith for a while, damn good bassist. Both were characters.

If you were at state in the late 90s/early 2000’s - there was a young black kid who wa a big ol boy. His mom worked for the university in some capacity. His name was OG(initials). He would just roam campus and he was always at the basketball games. I think he passed away in his late teens.
Trevaz Monroe was his actual name. I knew him well.

One story, of many - He rode to the football game in Tuscaloosa in 2006 with me and brought along a hand-written poster with about a paragraph's worth of hand-written remarks disparaging Alabama and their fans. At one point about mid-way through he changed colors, from red to pink and said something like "this is written in pink because y'all are all sissies" or some such, and then went back to the red magic marker to finish his thoughts. He would walk up to Alabama fans and implore them to read his thoughts. I so wish i had a picture.

I bought him a bus ticket one time, from (I think) Shreveport, LA to Dallas or vice versa. Every time I talked to him for the next year or so, he would start with "I ain't forgot about you, big D. I'mma pay you back" (safe to say, he never did)

I think he moved to Las Vegas in the late 2000's, fathered a set of twin children, and then sadly passed away in the early 2010's.

I loved Bernard, he was really funny if you talked to him. Some of my favorite quotes from him: "Got to get that dialysis dog" "I can't piss an inch, but I can *** a yard" on why he had one polished shoe and one dirty "that's my marketing dog"

In the late '60s, there was a menswear store on the main street downtown and they sold Hathaway shirts, one of the top brands at the time for pinpoint cotton dress shirts. One of their trademarks was buttons with only 3 holes. The shirt came folded in a plastic bag with the image of an older gray-haired man, neatly cut hair, very well-dressed, and he wore an eyepatch. The sales guy in the shop, may have been the owner, looked exactly like the image on the shirt bag, and spoke with a (real or fake) British accent, as I recall.

He must have been a Starkville character since I remember him to this day.

Need help with another one. Late 2000's/early 2010s. Can't remember the guys name, but I think we've discussed him on here some time ago....
There was a guy who always walked up and down highway 12. Black guy, slicked back hair, had horse teeth. He'd do wrestling moves up and down the highway and commentate loudly. Loved doing the Stone Cold Stunner. He busted in Taco Bell one night doing a whole wrestling routine and no one even blinked. Help me out here @Brian Hadad

When I lived in the Cotton District we often left our door open when we were grilling, drinking etc. Gerald would often wander in and hangout for a few beers. On more than one occasions I would come downstairs the next morning to find him passed out on the couch. He never bothered anything or anyone... just let himself out and went about his day. He was regular at Daves and Cheers at that point.

There is a photo collage in the bathroom at Starkville Cafe of Gerald and its made from all of the photos he took. Im pretty sure Im in it and about half of Starkville from that era.

He doesn't just have candy for the kids. Under the candy he's got a stash of fireball airplane bottles for the adults, great guy

Then they moved on to StaggerInn when it was in the old grill spot (now Unos Mas).
