The Hall have played two games and we can finally match the names with on court performance. The eye test says there is more talent on this year's team. It certainly can't be as bad. In the first two games SHU has looked like two different teams. Game 1 saw a very focused unit with solid ball movement and excellent free throw shooting. Game 2 was the opposite. The bottom line is they are 2-0. The Wagner game did not come down to the last possession, but not the outcome we need to see. Thoughts and Opinions??

Clearly a tale of two cities.

In the first game the mass substitutions didn't hurt although I feel strongly that most of us are not in favor. In the following game our second team hurt us badly.

The only players I feel played well in both games were Payne and Simpkins. Clark was alright, while Hines and Fisher had one dominate game and then a so so game.

Parker is still finding his feet, but he's now the backup point to Clark and I would like to see him get some PT with the starters instead of floundering with the second team. He's going to be needed when Clark sits or is in foul trouble.

Dar and Williams are excellent defenders but they need to play with consistency on offense to earn more PT.

Staton-McCray and Felton have struggled to date. The former getting back on track will be important. The later, not sure if he'll stay in the rotation.

Got to cover the three point area better. In the first half of the St Peter's game and throughout the Wagner game they did a terrible job, especially on penetration and then kick outs to the weak side . Stay with your man and do not help out unless your man is a poor shooter. We have two and when Godswill comes back three shot blockers, no need to help except in certain situations.

The ball movement has been good in both games but the outside shooters must hit their attempts more efficiently.

Bottom line, the team was ready to play in game one, but probably because they read their own press clippings afterward was not in game two and we saw the results. If that happens in game three then the team is not as good as I thought because you know they got an earful from Holloway for their lackluster effort Friday night.

I like Budd, Fisher, Simpkins and Hines as clear starters. The last spot is up for grabs for me. AJSM, Mike, Parker, Payne and Dar have shown enough to be part of the rotation. Felton has not.

The team seems better suited to Shaheen’s style. More players who can dribble and create their own offense. We will be improved, but I’m still not sure how much.

Was pleasantly surprised with a lot from Game 1 and disappointed Game 2.

Candidly, I don’t know what to think because the competition we faced thus far has been teams picked 11 out of 14 in the MAAC and 8 out of 10 in the NEC. Hard to ignore that or extrapolate some of the good stuff knowing that was your opponent. At least with better mid majors or most high majors you can take something.

I believe Sha has to get the guys to limit their overhelpng on defense. You cannot allow those open looks., Don't make the D too complicated. Stay with your man out on the wing.

Should The Hall actually play in close games, then Clarke must make his free throws. No way to have a top player and your PG missing too many.

How will guys shoot from the perimeter? The PG has the ability to dish out. The pass to Fisher for the open three was excellent. Maybe the biggest question mark. Also, who is the go to guy at crunch time?

Again, three point shooting. Clark set up a lot of open look 3s only to have guys brick them. Hopefully the FTs are an anomaly vs Wagner. Better execution in those two areas and this is a comfortable 15 point win.
Still have to clean up the perimeter defense obviously and agree that not sure who the go to guy is or who will emerge.

For me it's less about giving him rope and more about not believing in the style he preaches. Sha has never really been successful offensively aside from the E8 run, where his team and offense even that year was not very good, but somehow all of the stars got aligned and they caught lightning in a bottle for that incredible run where in the tournament their offense looked great. But we have never really seen that offense from Sha since that, despite having better players. In fact the SPU tournament offense looked totally different than what I've seen Sha teams run since he's come to SHU. And I have always wondered how much of that offense was Sha vs Whalen. Maybe I'm wrong, but when has Sha ever really had success offensively? And what reason do we have to reasonably expect that to change? SHU legend or not, if I had to cast my vote at this moment in time, I'd be in favor of moving on once we can afford it. But I would LOVE to be proven wrong because realistically any coach with the possible exception of Sha will treat us as a stepping stone and move on at the first hint of success. Sha's blood runs SHU blue and that may actually be his most positive attribute.

Why would it be Whalen's offense then and not now? Makes no sense.

Sha had a horrific season last year but he's more than deserving of showing what he can do. This season is a whole 2 games old, let's wait until the season is over.

Oh and you may want him gone but that's not happening for sure after this season and maybe more than that.

I agree nothing about it makes sense. It's what I've heard whispers of. Maybe Sha's hubris where he wants to do it his way now? Know what also makes no sense? How Sha looked like Al McGuire during that tournament run with inferior players and in the Big East his offense looks totally hapless. Can you explain that one?

I also agree that we can't afford to eat his salary, which is why I specifically said as of now I've seen what I need to see and would be in favor of moving on ONCE WE CAN AFFORD IT. I realize that may not be for a while. Again, I'd love for the storybook narrative of the favorite son to be a successful coach here but just being honest I haven't seen it yet. I can give my opinion 2 games in just like I can at any other time. We're in year four now and I have never seen the St Peter's tournament offense being run here, nor any real confirmation that he is capable of coaching offense. Never saw a good offense at SPU either just judging from data. And the alleged great defensive prowess never seems to materialize either. When is the last time you thought Seton Hall was a sound fundamental well coached team?
