Was hoping the new black guy was the Jedi. That would've been awesome, but nope. Gotta make make this an equal gender opportunity for Jedis. It's only going to be so many times that these new Star Wars can reference Episodes 4,5,6 before they have to go on their own. Not liking the direction.

Maybe he will evolve into one. Hell, he took on a whatever Solo JR is (not a Sith? lol) in a lightsaber fight and lived to tell the tale. To be fair that was not nearly as cringeworthy as I thought it would be (I had heard about it before seeing the movie), as Kylo was gravely injured and had the better of Finn most of the fight into wounding him and resulting in Finn passing out.

On the movie overall, it was fine. It was a lot of rehash from the OT. The movie really improved/picked up once Han and Chewie joined our younger generation. The next two movies are definitely gonna feel a void with no Han Solo as Ford dances circles around everyone else with his acting ability, but Ford wanted Solo dead so he got what he wanted finally 30+ years later.I thought Chewie was great in the movie despite being some creature that never talks and just makes noises, some funny moments and his reaction to Han's death was great...Leia was pretty blah, you can tell life has been hard on the actress. She looked the part, but something about her voice was weird to me...maybe some women's voices change when they get old/go through certain changes, but Ford sounded the same 30+ years later to me. Also random complaint, but Chewie just walks by Leia when they return post Han death and no hug or anything? I thought that was an awful take by Abrams to have Leia and Rey share that moment (at least on screen). Luke looked great, but said nothing and was pretty much not in the movie. I say 50/50 at best he survives this trilogy, just IMO.

As far as the plot goes, not much to say....a lot of rehash, not in a bad away, new Empire guys are not in any way scarier than the Vader/Emperor originals. I'll be really happy if Kylo Ren stays bad and 100% dark side as in reality there should be no coming back after him killing Han. Saddly this is Star Wars and they will repeat the cliche of him coming around, probably sacrificing himself for the good guys against Snoke in the final film. I digress. I enjoyed the movie, but a solid 4th ranking all time, well ahead of prequels but couple notches below originals.

Luke was the same way also. Its explained in the movies that the force is just that strong in them. And also don't forget the in The Force Awakens, its explained that Rey grew up with the Dealer guy and he showed her around the Falcon and how things worked. Im also assuming that since she grew up with him and was to become a scavenger for him, that he'd teach her .

Luke was trained by Obi-Wan. He showed some force ability before that, but he was nowhere capable of doing what Rey did prior to his training.

In fact, Luke doesn't really do anything as impressive as Rey with the force during any of the movies.

Im also curious, what was impressive that Rey did with the force? She was able to get a snippet into Kylo's mind because he was digging into hers.... She then took several tries to use the mind trick and finally she was able to use the force to get 2 hits in on Kylo and even doing so she was struggling until the last little struggle where she finally got the upper hand.

I bet deep down you guys would of had no problem if the roles were reversed and Ben Solo was the hero and Rey was the villain ..Kira Rey/Kira Ren or something.

It's likely he could have made that shot without the force, but the point of him using it is to show that he has turned towards becoming a Jedi, not that he needed it.

- She was able to read the mind of a Jedi/Sith(?) trained by both Luke and Snoke. She was able to defeat the same trained fighter in a lightsaber duel with no training. That absolutely trumps Luke's acrobatics as far as impressive feats go. And again, it becomes even more impressive considering one was trained by Obi-Wan and Yoda and the other had absolutely no training.

I'm not saying it ruined the movie or that Rey is a Mary Jane, just that it is emblematic of JJ Abrams directing style. Action over substance or development

Luke beating one of the greatest siths in Vader is less impressive than beating a guy who isn't a full blown sith? Wut?

As far as reading minds, it was shown through out Rens training was not complete. Even Snokes says at end, it's time to complete his training, yet Rey, who obviously had training based in ability and flashbacks beats a student, is more impressive than Luke defeating the Sith that took down the galaxy?

Deafeating Vader and the Emperor >---------------------> a student.

Kylo is not fully trained and only uses fear/hate/whatever and a lightsaber that barely stays lit.

Rey has had a tough life obviously and can swing that staff around like a light saber already. It makes ok sense for me to see her defeat an obviously weakened Kylo Ren who has been shot and just killed his father (whether the 'I'm torn apart' thing was fake or not). Chewie's gun is super powerful obviously as we saw when Han got to shoot it twice and looked amazed at it each time.

The best explanation is Vader was doing enough to not get himself hurt, while not killing Luke, and then got overwhelmed by Luke's aggression. Vader could have killed Luke multiple times. Luke did not defeat Palpatine, either. Vader kills him as he is about to murder Luke.

Also, that occurred after he had been trained by the two greatest living Jedis. It's not that it wasn't impressive, but it at least came from a place that made sense/was developed.

When factoring in the international take, Star Wars is dealing with a much stronger dollar than when Avatar came out. Euro is like 25% weaker, Canada/Australia all much weaker, all the LatAm currencies are in the *******, etc. Pretty big headwind comparatively.

Ren was not trying to kill her either. He just asked her to join him. She then clears her mind and releases a counter that obviously surprises a severely hurt Ren. Nothing she did really is that big of a stretch given she probably had some sort of training she can't remember which remains to be seen.

There is a theory floating around about Finn's Rehabilitation, of which Captain Phasma had confirmed to General Hux. We see that Hux has quite a bit disdain for Kylo Ren. Hux wants to be the one to capture/kill Luke. The time it took for Finn's rehab is closely related to the time that he was able to sneak Poe away and be able to desert the First Order. It is, under this theory, that Phasma allowed for Finn to be rehabilitated to understand the rebellion and act as a sleeper cell towards them. Finn has acted as if he knows nothing, as in the good soul, etc... The key in this theory is that Hux had rehabilitated Finn to find Luke before Ren, as he wants the glory with killing the last Jedi(To his knowledge).

I find it funny we allow ourselves to believe the X-Men can have powers , The Avengers have powers etc... but people can't just believe the Force can guide Anakin, Luke and Rey to accomplish amazing things? Especially when the movies lay it out on the table that the Force can do almost anything.

Or maybe if they would of just said Rey was Luke's daughter instead of just implying it... people would of accepted her strength in the force.

Yeah but that implication made Disney a couple extra hundred million dollars in repeat viewings to look for more clues about Rey's heritage.That's why we don't know Rey is his daughter yet. Even though we really do.

You may know how to work on a helicopter but not be able to fly it.

Just like Anakin in the 1st episode they both jump into a spacecraft, that they never flown before. And proceed to fly it in and through a capital ship during combat.
Luke never just jumped into an X-wing on Tatooine then take out a Death Star.

Then Finn the starbase toilet scrubber. He did not know how to operate a TIE fighter or it's defensive armaments but knew that flying low messed up their tracking?

Sorry the character development seemed rushed and shallow.

I've read one of the books that came out after Disney bought the license. Heir to the Jedi. It takes place just after A New Hope. The novel introduces love interest and although she ends up dying, there's barely any mention, if at all, of Luke's struggle with the Jedi rules regarding celibacy.

If she is not his, then that's a pretty huge red herring to throw out there given all the clues they throw in the audience's face.

And the ending. The resistance has been looking for Skywalker, and when they finally find the map, Leia sends a girl no one knows anything about to meet up with him. She knows Rey is his daughter and we will too early in episode 8.
