I'd rather them have more time on the story and production instead of rushing one out but having to wait 2 years...... AHHHHHHHHHHH at least give us some nude rey pics to keep us entertained.

Makes much more sense to spread out the movies and milk this as much as possible from a profit standpoint, didn't really understand why they were wanting to release them a year and a half apart.

Its not a good move in the international box office to go against Avatar 2 though. I think they should move the date to the beginning of December

I think they were trying to get it back on the "traditional" May release. VII was originally supposed to be in May too, but Abrams convinced Disney to push it back (that was because of time concerns). After the dominance of VII in a December release, they're now trying to repeat it with VIII.

avatar made 2 billion in the international markets due to the made for 3d ........ I don't think the new ones will make that much but I bet they make close to 1.5 billion.. Now here in the states..... unless its just a much better movie over all, I doubt it makes over 600 million because we're used to 3D now and the plot this time will matter.

Damn, I was really looking forward to Star Wars in May, right near the end of school. Seemed like a good summer kickoff.

I wonder how much the main character being a woman has effect on the chinese box office? I was told by a chinese american friend of mine that it might not go over well in china because many don't like women shining over men.

I always love the little Han Chewie interactions in the movies. My favorite from FA was when they are on the Starkiller planet out in the snow and Chewie grumbles and Han looks at him "You're cold?!?!"

My all time favorite was the "I don't know fly casual" from Jedi.

That's probably a factor (I just looked and the Hunger Games films didn't do great over there). It's doing okay in China. Apparently the biggest thing is Star Wars just doesn't have the previous exposure over there.

There was an incredibly cheesy hype music video starring some Chinese pop star released a few days ago to try to drum up interest. Apparently the original trilogy was only released in China in the last couple of years. Where we have multiple generations who've grown up with it as a major cultural force, the originals were released at a time when China was blocking tons of foreign media.

The fact that a galaxy far, far away still doesn't have very many Asians is going to cost Star Wars a chance to overtake avatar.

I know I'm super late to the party but finally got a chance to see it. Although I enjoyed the nostalgia aspect of it being a Star Wars film and seeing Han, Chewie and Luke, I thought the film was just okay.

The feminist angle was blatant and I didn't enjoy Kylo Ren removing the mask so much, which took away from his threatening persona and humanized him.

I liked how Rey had no training with a lightsaber and with only knowing of the force for five minutes, she was able to defeat Kylo Ren.

Oh, can someone tell me how they got the blue lightsaber Luke Skywalker used? Wasn't that lost at the end of Empire and then he constructs the green saber in ROTJ?

First point: If you can't get behind a female protagonist and would be jedi for these movies then that's on you. I'm a big fan of Sarah Conner, Ellen Ripley, Samus Aran etc. Besides I don't know how blatant it really was. Its not like she ran around saying I'm a woman don't tell me what to do blah blah blah girl power. She also had a ton of help from a bunch of guys.

Second point has been talked about a lot in the previous pages. Given the circumstances and her still unknown heritage its pretty plausible.

Han asks about the 3rd point in the movie and Maz says it is a story for another time. Pay attention next time. Plus I'm not sure how important that it actually is really.

Plus, women had a pretty big damned role in Avatar. So I'm not sure how that would make much of a difference between the two in China?

So with no training at all, she's able to do Jedi mind tricks and almost perfect the force, which is something Luke needed three movies to do?

She's been on the Millenium Falcon for 10 minutes and she knows the ship better than Han Solo?

The handholding scene, being the one to save Finn multiple times, absolutely being perfect at everything with no guidance at all while many of the males look weak and stupid just add up over the course of the film.

This isn't like it came out of left field. This is a popular observation/critique from many outlets.

I have no issue with a female protagonist. That's not the issue. It's when you don't do it organically and for the sake of simply pushing a feminist agenda (J.J. Is very outspoken with his social and political views and casting reasons and it was obvious in the whole film).

For example, Kate Beckinsale's character in Underworld is a 600 year old Death Dealer who has been training to kill forever but started off as normal. In Star Wars, Rey becomes Lebron James within 10 minutes with no one ever showing her how to do anything. She's been on her own and she amazingly does everything so well with no help.

Perfect the force? I didn't see her hurl a tree at Ren with the force or something. Plus Luke was pretty damn immature.

Pretty sure she has been tinkering around on that hunk of junk for years.

Oh and Luke just magically knew how to fly an X-Wing with no flight school or military training what so ever.

Well Finn is a Stormtrooper so being weak and incompetent should be right in his wheelhouse.

I'm sure Rey's ease in using the force will be addressed in VIII when more of her background is revealed.

"Firefly" did a great job of subtlety incorporating Asian influence w/out casting, you know, Asians.

Did you ever see the early concept art for what ended up being Rey and Finn? They were actually Kira and Sam.

Well, J.J. had to change that. Looking forward to the gay Native American character to be checked off the PC box in the next film.

Or maybe the actor playing Finn did a hell of job. Not every thing is race driven, like it is in your head.

I just wish it was a bunch of white dudes in the lead roles. If they have a woman then give her like 5 minutes of screen time and only have her there for eye candy. We know that's all they are good for anyway. Black dudes? Just leave them out all together. Nobody wants to see that ****. Native Americans in space? That's dumbest thing I've ever heard. Political correctness is destroying everything! Can't even watch a damn movie any more without someone trying to convince me that a woman can master the force quicker than a man! I'm sick of it.

*Sigh*

When you have six stories and film after film with character development showing us how our protagonist improved and trained to grow toward the ultimate end game- it sets a precedent how a story arc should go.

So when you've had Jedis like Anakin, Luke and even Obi Wan being trained to become better and didn't just automatically go from 0-100 within 10 minutes, you can see how it would bother someone. Tons of male characters show their transformation from novice to mastering their craft- Batman, Rocky, Luke Skywalker, etc. It basically, made Kylo Ren look like a total ***** as it did many of the other characters.

Ren is "super independent woman" with no training at all, somehow learns the "force" and how to use a lightsaber on the fly with never being trained. Meanwhile Luke has to train for years where as Rey needs 10 minutes.

And deliberately stating you don't want whites and you come out and say you don't want white actors like J,J, did, that in itself is a problem. He made sure to give us those close-ups of women in the military and all of the different races so those boxes got checked off.

But you're a filmmaker, right? You think you should beat your audience over the head with your political message? That was a subtle to a hammer to the skull.

You might have somewhat of a point if the actor that played Finn didn't do such an excellent job. Seriously, the guy was fantastic, was my favorite actor in the whole movie.

Whitesrule, Lucas dropped the ball on Anakin. He should have been portrayed more like Rey but even more so. He also should have started at 19 or so and been someone you really like so you feel bad when he falls to the dark side not someone you want to punch in the face every time he is on the screen.

No I don't think you should beat your audience over the head. And I didn't feel like I was beat over the head with it. Then again I didn't go into the theater looking for JJ's ulterior motives. I can understand the place JJ is coming from though if he does have an agenda. Women in this industry have historically been given ****** roles and paid substantially less than their male co-stars. The same goes for African Americans and people of color in general. That is starting to change some and hopefully over the course of the next twenty years or so that will slowly become the norm.
