Mizzou hit a bad year to have an opening though. Lots of good jobs available right now.
You nailed it. This is a terirble year to be hiring a coach. The further down the list of traditional football schools you are the worse your situation. Money is a great equalizer but it isnt the be all end all. Most of these guys are already very well to do. Remember the # you see posted showing what they are paid is only what the school (ie state public knowledge) is paying. When you factor in the perks (cars, housing, local commercial spots etc) they are likely well ahead of the listed #. So now a rich man is getting richer. BTW OP the rest of this is not directed towards you at all, just wanted to give my less than two cents worth.
Folks must remove themselves from the fan base and look at this from a neutral position, what do you do? Lets say youre making 500k at WKU. Kentucky offers you 2.5 million a year, Georgia offers you 1.5 million, Miami offers you 1.25 million, Missouri offers you 2 million. You see where Im going. When your already rich you can be more selective. So how many of those schools do you pick ahead of us knowing the numbers I have listed.? For discussions sake lets assume all the other terms are close (years, guaranteed money, buyouts etc).
The only way were gonna score a big name in this climate is to offer silly money. Were gonna have to offer 4 plus million. If you think about it. Mitch already did this. He gave Stoops a sweetheart deal. I think he did this partially to make sure he was locked in should the middle years be rough (think Brooks). He has made his crazy stab with Stoops and he has tied himself to this decision. Were all hopeful this is Brooks reincarnate. Frankly, were all in with Stoops. Folks may as well let this unfold and lets see if this recruiting pays off. Firing coordinators every year isnt the answer. Continuity becomes an issue at some point and not many guys are gonna jump on board when you tell them the last few guys only made it a year or two.
Ill be honest I have been adamant all year that no matter what happened this year I was not going to give up on this staff. Ill also be honest and say the last half of the season has me doubting myself. But in the end I realize we gotta play the hand out with the guys we have at the table. Lets just hope they arent over betting their hands because were gonna be there when the cards are flipped. Besides what do we have to lose? Im 60 years old and Ive been in on the river with a lot of coaches. Percentages say Im due to win a big hand here soon (or die lol).
Seriously, we dont wanna be trying to hire a coach with so many others looking that outclass us. If we make a move we need to wait until the pecking order favors us a bit more. Lets ride with what we have for at least another year and likely two. If we had fired Brooks when most wanted to a lot of good things dont happen for us. This is no time to get a weak stomach.
