Personally I have no issue with anyone who feels their born gender was incorrect. That's their choice to be comfortable and happy.

But I absolutely draw the line when former males compete against natural females. The advantage they have destroys any semblance of fair competition.

I'm a screaming liberal but I agree with you guys. So does Martina Navratilova, btw.

This is a fair and valid point. But like all humans, not all transgender females are athletically inclined. Naturally, in this context, we only hear about the ones are have the ability and thus an advantage.

I am acquainted with a number of transgender woman -- one of them is a somewhat prominent Seton Hall alum. I can assure you that none of them would be dominating athletic competition against natural-born women.

Trans should compete against trans is what I would vote for.
Should a trans biological woman compete against a trans biological male? For instance, note the above pictured "woman." Should that person who looks like captain america be competing against biological women who are at a tremendous disadvantage and in contact sports even tremendous danger due to innate biological differences? Picture the above person in a wrestling or boxing match against a trans biological woman. It seems that brings the argument to the need for now separate leagues not only for males and females but also for trans biological males and trans biological females. Just want to know if you really think we should have four leagues for all sports or if we should instead invest our focus on the mass mental health crisis in our country.

Do you believe it is a mental health issue and not something else? Wrong forum to discuss this.
First of all, this is a good reason why we need an LOTS board. Dan brought this up, but the reality is, this has nothing to do with Seton Hall basketball.

On the subject, I wonder if gender assignment surgery was not available, how would these individuals manage?

There are studies that show that depression and suicide rates post surgery are much higher. Does the surgery set an unrealistic expectation that leads to disappointment?

Regarding sports, if you were born as a male, you compete with males. If you were born as a female, you compete with females. I don’t think we need three or four leagues (because that will lead to five, six or seven leagues).

Dan brought it up because I think he saw it had to do with sports. I don't think it was brought up to discuss biology, genes and sexual orientation. We should leave that up to the experts in those fields.

Without question, and that was always taken as obvious fact by mental health experts until it became a political issue quite recently. Do you believe it is not? At what point can a mental perception that separates from objective scientific biological reality deviate to the point where you are comfortable calling it a delusion?

Btw I am only asking you these questions based on your statement that "trans should compete against trans." I think the issue is deeper since then you would still have biological genders competing against the opposite gender, and hence still there would be a level of natural disparity even danger, leading to the need for at least 4 different leagues.

Until we can concentrate on SHU sports and have enough content I post sports stories of interest to keep the board functioning.

Most of us agree that simply put males should compete against males and females against females.

I am not in favor of transgender leagues because there would be little interest, not enough available athletes in said sport, and the enormous ridicule that the athletes would have to face.

There is so much hatred in the world from those that are different from the expected norm that in this case 'straight' people would never accept sports leagues of this type.

I don't hate the athletes but I would never watch the event. And I feel there are those in the majority that would take this to a far more violent level simply because the people involved don't meet their expectations of normal.

So trans athletes can't compete at all in your scenario? They forfeit the right due to their sexual identity? Also does it matter if you or anyone watches them? It maybe only matters in pro sports? Does it matter in high school and college?

Is a gay guy a man? Is a lesbian a women? We can ask those questions too. What defines a man or a women? Appearance? personalty? Physical equipment? Or how a person thinks about themselves and feels about themselves?

Also the picture Halldan put up was prior to the transformation to a women. I showed what the person now looks like and if you met her on the street and did not know this story by all appearances you would think you met a female!

If Halldan instead put up first the picture I put up you would have answered yes!

The question was transgender leagues. There are not enough athletes, money or interest to make that possible.

Easy to say it should exist, but difficult to fund it if there is little to no interest. And just as importantly not enough competitors to stock any roster.

For the purpose of sport it should be what sex you are assigned at birth.

If you seriously don't know this answer and have to ask, SMH.

Biology, plain and simple. XX/XY. End of story.

If I dress up like a bear and think I'm a bear, guess what? I'M NOT A BEAR!!!

No reason to hate those with a serious mental issue but also no reason to have to play along with the charade either.

These are NOT mental health issues!!! Do your research!!!! It is not just about XX/XY! IT is more complicated! Again this is not the forum but if you do legit internet research you will find answers to show how wrong you are!

I have to agree with shu67 on this.
There is no definitive one-size-fits-all answer. Unfortunately, there is a lot of gender reassignment procedures and surgeries that are manifested in mental health issues and lack of self-esteem.

No different than a good many patients who opt for unnecessary plastic surgery

And yes, mental health is complex. Nobody is arguing that.

As a licensed health professional I have certainly looked into this and come to the direct opposite conclusion on it being a mental health issue. We will have to agree to disagree. But some areas of common ground from a societal standpoint should be pretty easy: 1.) Nobody should be compelled by threat of law to humor someone else's subjective feelings that conflict with biological realities, and 2.) Biological men should not be allowed to compete against biological women, nor invade women's safe spaces like locker rooms and bathrooms. Once we open the door to the idea of infinite "genders" and "you must be treated according to whatever you say you are," the downstream legal and societal implications are nothing short of frightening. We now have people identifying as animals and other races and alien life forms. I wish I was joking. This is just one of the many branches of the severe mental health crisis afflicting our country today.

False. Nobody would tell an anorexic person that they are correct inn their belief. Adults need to stop making excuses and tell kids when they are wrong.

Medical and Scientific Facts About Biological Sex

Biological sex is a label assigned by a medical professional at birth based on physical characteristics (genitalia) and other biological determinants. Gender, a sociological and legal construct that varies by culture, is a complex topic that goes beyond the scope of this resource.

Sexual differentiation occurs during fetal development and is driven by genetic and hormonal factors. This process determines the development of male or female physical traits but can result in a spectrum of outcomes due to variations in genetic and hormonal influences.

Chromosomal and genetic factors matter. While XX and XY chromosomes are often associated with female and male sexes, variations such as XXY, XYY, and others also occur in an estimated 1 in 1,500 to 1 in 2,000 live births, which amounts to approximately 200,000 to 330,000 Americans based on the current population.

Primary sex characteristics (genitalia and reproductive organs) and secondary characteristics (e.g., body hair and breast development) are shaped by genetics and hormones. These traits can vary widely among individuals, even within the same chromosomal sex.

It is not uncommon for individuals to have atypical combinations of chromosomes
(e.g., those with Kleinfelter syndrome, a common condition that results when a person assigned male at birth has an extra copy of the X chromosome instead of the typical XY), hormones, or anatomy that challenge the binary model of sex assignment. Such natural variation, which is neither a disease nor a disorder requiring medical intervention, illustrates the complexity of biological sex.

Can we please stick to the sports topics on this thread? I will lock it if this doesn’t calm down. I let it go because it was civil at first but now it’s getting off the rails. Also Please stay away from profanity.

This is a very complicated issue. Most of us, at least me, cant understand this state of mind.

But, for me it is pretty easy to say a person born a male cannot complete with females in athletics.

It takes society a while to accept things. I saw a documentary about the stonehenge riots in the late 60s that jumpstarted the gay movement. A very strident gay activist of the time is interviewed, and he says "while I know gay marriage will never be approved...", and a few decades later it is mainstream. I used to invite some black guys from Belmar to come to my towns open gyms, and I was told by the woman in charge to make sure those N-words arent here next week. That woman has grown and no longer sees the world that way. My nieces were freaked out by the gay guys on the street in the street when they visited me in my Greenwich Village apt when they were in grammar school. They dont see things that way anymore. And, my ignorant thoughts on the trans issue tells me that this is way more complicated than gay or straight / black and white.

A very long time ago when I was in 4th grade a teacher asked a question that would never be asked at this time. She asked us if anyone would rather be different than what they are now. Meaning does any boy want to be a girl or vice versa. Being that young I couldn't fathom why anyone would ask that question. But to my surprise one of the most pleasant, but very shy girl raised her hand that she wanted to be a boy. As you can imagine she took hell for that and I felt very bad for her although I couldn't understand why she wanted to be a boy.

That year was the last we ever saw her as during the summer she disappeared. Still, to this day I remember her face, remember her full name and wonder whatever happened to her.

Mental health issues are sometimes if not most times brought on by how people who are different are treated by society, parents, friends, peers, etc.. Keep that in mind when you view someone who is different.

I would very much be the starting center!

Gender isn't a social construct. Archeologists around the world can tell if a skeleton is male or female by the bones.
