Can someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we ever stood up at the Meadowlands until the team scored. I don't think we started doing it until the New Big East was created? I wouldn't mind it but our identity is not scoring the ball. Thank God we scored 2.5 minutes in because I think the next bucket was with about 15 and change to go on the clock and Sha took a timeout in between the first and second bucket. I actually looked around and saw people sitting before we scored in frustration.

Our crowds look like they are at a funeral. Been like that for a long time and game atmosphere is just not fun

I don't remember when we started with the tip-off standup, but it's been several years. Yes, it is annoying when we don't score reasonably quickly. The good news is is forces you to focus on the game right from the start so overall I don't mind it.

All in all, the crowds have been excellent. Even as recently as the Xavier game, as soon as the team showed signs of life in the second half the crowd became engaged and stayed that way for the remainder of the game. There is a difference between being a fan and looking at them.

I like it. Gets our fans on their feet.

Years ago in Walsh we used to throw rolls of toiletpaper when we scored first so there is precedent at SHU for doing something until we score our first points. Have some fun and stop complaining.
I was just about to post the same thing.

Do you remember the away game at Kentucky where our fans threw out the toilet paper after our first basket and were removed from the game?

We all live in nj and still cant figure out when to leave for the game so we are not late (XU game excused lol)

The crowd got loud in the 2nd half and has been loud a nunber of times. One game had a good student crowd which is a killer i will never understand.

Was at the SJ game. MSG very quiet in the first half. Crowds cheer good play.

The msg lighting makes for a much better environment. How do other arenas handle lighting?

Does this really not extend back to the Meadowlands? I could swear it does, but memory is a funny thing. No one has rebutted this yet, so I guess mine is fuzzy at best.

I don’t remember doing it in the meadowlands just in Pru Center. I remember one game during Gonzo years or maybe early Willard where we stood through the first media timeout because it took over 4 minutes to score.

@Seton75 I’ve thought the same on the lighting many times. Maybe some of the upgrades coming can do that. Most new arenas or renovated sites have addressed this too.

Excellent? Us diehards will always go to our share if not more. But the attendance numbers haven’t been good at all even coming off last year. I don’t tell people how to spend their time or money, but the numbers have been weak.

Yes to 75’s point crowds tend to get more into it when the team is scoring/playing well or coming from behind. That’s true for most. But when you have 6,000 compared to 14,000 it makes a huge difference in the aggregate.

The student apathy is a part of it, but just as big is that for whatever reason we don’t seem to capture in huge numbers the more casual fan or local NJ folks who are diehards for professional sports but don’t have a college team. Also as someone constantly pulled in 50 directions, I get the time commitment aspect.

It's a Pru Center thing and, as I recall, was prompted by Tim McLoone imploring the crowd to get on its feet at tipoff. After enough games of being encouraged to stand up, the crowd got up automatically. It was nothing organic.
This is exactly how it unfolded.

I always feel like most people (except maybe students) including myself stand just to stand at start of game and most kind of just want to sit back down quickly. I also do not think standing at beginning helps our team score, prevents the opposing team from scoring or makes the fans any louder at beginning of the game.

I have cited this many times as well; it just changes the atmosphere...right now, in the crowd I feel like I have a spotlight on me! on me!! lol

The focus should be on the court...and no one does it better than MSG to me; crowd is darkened out....court illuminates...creates a "moody electric" atmosphere.

Dont know the "why" they dont do it....just wish they would figure it out.

Correct me if I'm wrong but when we got to that first media timeout, without having scored, we all just sat down anyway. And there has certainly been more than one game when I've wondered whether we would even score before the first media timeout. Frankly, the idea works when you have a good offensive team and can score within the first couple of possessions. After the first couple empty possessions, the crowd just loses its energy and gets restless, which defeats the whole purpose of standing, and is, honestly, embarrassing for us.

Why not try the reverse for Sha's teams? Stand up and get louder on each defensive possession until the opponent scores. It's what we do best anyway and to the extent that it gets our guys going defensively, and causes the other team to tighten up, then it might have some real value.

The standing up thing started with Syracuse fans.

And the toilet paper/streamer thing started at Big Five games at the Palestra.

And of course the special Gonzo entrance was taken from UNLV. What a proud thing that was!

Lloyde I was just going to post the same thing. The "standing until first basket" was always a Syracuse tradition. I have seen other schools adopt it too but that's a Cuse tradition for as long as I can remember.

It's so engrained in their culture fans do it at neutral sites and away games.

I believe you're correct that everybody sat down at the first media timeout anyway but don't remember for sure.

The student situation has to be addressed. It really seems like we haven't recovered as a fan base post covid. I know we have had some good crowds along the way, but definitely a noticeable dropoff. The attendance in 2014-2020 was spectacular (and especially '20). I know we were Top 10 team in '20, but i just can't figure the students out.

Why can't we have dollar beer nights for weeknight games, or come up with some plan for games where we know the attendance will be light. You have to win your home games, and the fans make a difference (and especially the students). Getting students to come to games should not be that difficult. I know TV has created some unusual start times of games, but we need to figure this out. Give out pizzas to students to make sure they attend games. Just figure something out.

My language was imprecise. Yes, the crowds are smaller but coming off last season, that is to be expected. I was referring to the engagement and intensity level of the fans that are there. I don't agree the crowds have been funereal.

I wish the student attendance was better and I wish I had a solution.
