I get the impression from this board that these are and always will be the most important rivals to Rutgers. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
In my opinion, the Big East was the right home for us, playing the schools that had been in the Big East (including UL and Cincinnati, maybe not Miami) + Penn State. Would have made for a great conference.

Unfortunately that's not today's world and we are in a conference with a lot of Midwest and West Coast schools. Academically we fit, the alternative was horrible but the Big East was home.

Pitt was the only school that was honorable. Cuse less Brutus like than BC.
BC was by far the most devious and underhanded.
Va Tech was honest from the get go.
WVA honorable too.
I may be mistaken and it has been a while but wasn't Pitt on the conference's committee that told us to reject the ESPN offer and was at the same time negotiating with the ACC their exit?

All that does is people crying about missing the 10th, 11th and 12th spots. Nothing changes. It will be worse!
How will it be worse? No one will give a **** about whether 10-2 NC State or 8-3 LSU should be getting in other than those fanbases.

Instead of 1 team crying like a baby it will be 3-5 every year. Who cares? The media. They love this crap every year!

A real true Big East…yes, that would have been good.

But overall, regardless of geography, we do fit the profile for where we are now.

They can write their articles and the fanbases can gnash their teeth but the fact of the matter is they are debating the 10-12 seeds, not your legit title contenders and certainly not power conference teams with undefeated records.

true!!!!!! remember when it came out that they were voting or conducting meetings to keep the BE intact and secretly meeting with the ACC?????????

Fredo name was given to them for a reason
This is true. Prior to BC jumping ship, their athletic director Gene DeFilippo was rumored to have shared with John Stafford of the ACC details of "executive session" discussions amongst the remaining Big East ADs while also proclaiming at the same time that BC was diligently working to maintain the viability of the Big East conference.

He also had a slip of the tongue stating in a later interview that ESPN was providing the ACC guidance on their expansion which forced the ACC office to issue a release that the schools were really calling the shots and not ESPN - lol

We would've left in a heartbeat, too.

100. Not to mention using an unprecedented playoff snub, in the last year that's even possible, that as nothing to do with RU whatsoever, is the weakest flex I've ever seen.

Syracuse was lined up to go with BC but got nosed out by Virginia Tech.

Think that’s incorrect. VTech and Miami had already announced their intentions to leave. BC was opposed to it until they got an invite. Then they ran for the door.

BC I get. The conference was already busted by the time Pitt and Cuse left. We were a half step behind those two out the door. And this was a conference don’t forget - that paid good money to have Tagliabue bad mouth us so we would be less marketable. You expect Pitt and Cuse to accept less money to hold that $hithole together?

All the football schools were looking to get out.

Amazing that the OP doesn’t realize the TV contract was 5 million per school in the big east when we left.

You've got that backwards. BC and Miami were leaving. Syracuse was offered, but Crouthamel sat on his hands and dragged it out because JB wanted to stay in the BE, until VTech was offered the spot.

There was a lawsuit filed. Here's an accurate summary from Wikipedia in Richard Blumenthals bio...

"

Big East and ACC

Blumenthal played a pivotal role in the expansion of the Atlantic Coast Conference and the departures of Boston College, Miami, and Virginia Tech from the Big East. He led efforts by the Big East football schools (Virginia Tech, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, and West Virginia) in legal proceedings against the Atlantic Coast Conference, the University of Miami and Boston College, accusing them of improper disclosure of confidential information and of conspiring to dismantle the Big East. According to Blumenthal, the case was pursued because "the future of the Big East Conference was at risk—the stakes huge for both state taxpayers and the university's good name."[65] The suits cost the schools involved $2.2 million in the first four months of litigation.[66] The lawsuit against the ACC was initially dismissed on jurisdictional grounds but was subsequently refiled.[67] A declaratory judgment by the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts exonerated Boston College in the matter. Virginia Tech accepted an invitation from the ACC and withdrew from the suit to remove itself from the awkward position of suing its new conference. An out-of-court $5 million settlement was eventually reached, which included a $1 million exit fee that Boston College was required to pay the Big East under the league's constitution.[65]

Some[who?] have speculated that the lawsuit was one of the biggest reasons that the University of Connecticut was not sought after by the ACC during its 2011 additions of then-Big East members Syracuse and Pittsburgh. From 2013 to 2020 UConn was a member of the less lucrative American Athletic Conference, the successor to the original Big East, before rejoining the Big East in 2020."

Got it. Thank you.

I still don’t begrudge anyone trying to get out of the Big East. Only feel bad for the schools we left behind (USF, Temple, even UCONN).

there is dumb, there is being shortsighted, there is cutting your nose to spite your face, there is genuine ignorance, there is limitations to what some people can do intillectually but there is zero excuse for willful ignorance and being stupid for the sake of being stupid

you sir make the latter an olympic sport

Without the Big Ten, we’d be UCONN without decent basketball. Instead, we’ve got 80 million annually to invest in our programs.

Wonder if he has even been on campus to see how much the infrastructure of athletics has transformed since we entered the B1G. In the next decade, we will be a revenue powerhouse. And with that, will come domination.

Yes. I could also imagine Notre Dame in as well + Miami (a person can dream).

In my perfect world the FB members of the OBE would've sent the BB Onlys packing and went after the ACC. The OBE was a better FB conference than the ACC. ACC FB was FSU and a ok Clemson and a bunch of mediocre programs. I think it would've been possible to get FSU, Maryland, Clemson and GTech to leave the Carolina Mafia, but the OBE let Providence of all people run the show. I personally will never feel bad for UConn. I thought it was a huge joke to give a 1-AA a pass straight to the BCS.

I would include UConn if we’re talking about a real Big East all sports conference.

IMO the B1G would still be >>>> than a real Big East (including State Penn).

But it wouldn’t have been bad spot if it happened that way and the B1G didn’t.

It is so funny- My wife is a great cook- and man, let her get into anything Caribbean...So- Leavitt is in our living room- like so often, we had no idea until an hour or two beforehand.
We rush home from work- The Mrs already had the nightmare visit from NCSt - and here he is- comes in- sees the shoes at the door and asks her- should I remove my shoes for you Mrs. ...
He then sits in the living room- and I can't remember his name at the moment. Socks up on the ottoman- and my wife goes and gets some Apps she just through in from the freezer- never forget, Tostitos. lol
He and the OL Coach polished down a ton of them and ask if there are any more- there wasnt- so out came some left over jerk wings- They had a look on their face like they never ate anything like them- no one spoke football for at least an hour.
What a great visit and he was the same when we went there on the OV. Even after they beat us in 05- he was yelling up and busting our balls that Kevin should have played for them.
Loved the guy and was surprised by him on the sidelines and what happened- dude had his shoes off in our house. lol

The big difference is those teams you can blame themselves for leaving it in the hands of the comittee by losing 2 or 3 games. FSU was an undefeated conference champion who won every game they played. It was not their fault and the ability to make the playoffs was taken from them.

Would we have in 2003? Not sure sure. By 2011 the conference was getting demolished and anyone with an out took it.

Just for fun we saw the whole thing replay on a different coast this year.

We have to stop thinking that getting our teeth kicked in by Big10 powers is some major accomplishment
You really have a way of turning anything into a shot against Rutgers.. even your chosen avatar is the worst logo/spirit mark Rutgers ever had, as short as that was.
