The big difference is those teams you can blame themselves for leaving it in the hands of the comittee by losing 2 or 3 games. FSU was an undefeated conference champion who won every game they played. It was not their fault and the ability to make the playoffs was taken from them.
They could have won by a lot more.. style points.. in the wrong way.

You really have a way of turning anything into a shot against Rutgers.. even your chosen avatar is the worst logo/spirit mark Rutgers ever had, as short as that was.
It is funny- B1G powers- Mich/OSU/PSU - outside of themselves and the playoffs- they have kicked in the teeth of everyone they play...

It is so funny- My wife is a great cook- and man, let her get into anything Caribbean...So- Leavitt is in our living room- like so often, we had no idea until an hour or two beforehand.
We rush home from work- The Mrs already had the nightmare visit from NCSt - and here he is- comes in- sees the shoes at the door and asks her- should I remove my shoes for you Mrs. ...
He then sits in the living room- and I can't remember his name at the moment. Socks up on the ottoman- and my wife goes and gets some Apps she just through in from the freezer- never forget, Tostitos. lol
He and the OL Coach polished down a ton of them and ask if there are any more- there wasnt- so out came some left over jerk wings- They had a look on their face like they never ate anything like them- no one spoke football for at least an hour.
What a great visit and he was the same when we went there on the OV. Even after they beat us in 05- he was yelling up and busting our balls that Kevin should have played for them.
Loved the guy and was surprised by him on the sidelines and what happened- dude had his shoes off in our house. lol

Great story!

Would we have in 2003? Not sure sure. By 2011 the conference was getting demolished and anyone with an out took it.

Just for fun we saw the whole thing replay on a different coast this year.

2003 we were nearly kicked out of the Big East.

They don't always schedule a tough OOC because they have to play each other; winning the Big 10 is pretty much an automatic ticket to the playoffs. After this year it's definitely an auto ticket.

You would think the top 3 (and top 5 when Washington/Oregon come in) should be able to play with anyone in the country. The time lag between the end of the season and playoff games could work against them.

I don't recall that! Considering 4 teams were leaving, hard to fathom, and Temple in reality was only kicked out because they pressed the issue of full membership (i.e. if they had just left well enough alone they would have stayed in).

Do you have anything even remotely indicating we were going to get evicted?

Of course he doesn't have that. In 2002 we were beating number one Miami for 3/4s of a game... and they needed help from refs. No way in 2003 is there any real talk of booting Rutgers. But the day we signed with teh Big Ten there has been talk by haters that we should be kicked from the Big Ten.. so people like him can always find *something* to use along those lines.

I still don’t begrudge anyone trying to get out of the Big East. Only feel bad for the schools we left behind (USF, Temple, even UCONN).

The basketball only schools were the big problem: they were tight little bitches who didn't want to relinquish control to those bad 'ol football schools. If they had been proactive and expanded so that it was a bigger football conference, Miami would not have wanted to leave in the first place. We really could have had a solid east coast football conference, but they were not going to allow the majority to swing to the football schools.

Leavitt truly ate, drink, breathed south florida football. had a lot of respect for his tenacious pursuit of building something

So South Florida has been 72-97 since they fired him.

2003 we were nearly kicked out of the Big East.

That's the first I'm hearing of that.

That wasn't the main point with Temple. Because they were playing in the Vet, they could not schedule home games until November due to the field being used by the Phillies. So that created huge scheduling issues for the Big East.

It was between us and Temple. Removal was based on attendance and results. We barely beat them out.

What are you talking about? They played home games in October and September all the time. Yes they always had to wait for NFL and baseball schedules to be released but the Big East was always late releasing schedules even after. The new stadiums for both the Phillies and Eagles had been approved to be built even prior to the announcement to kick them out so that was not an issue. It was because they only averaged 18,272 per game, never had a wining season, finished last 5 times in 10 years, and never finished higher than second to last.
