Where is the LOVE!!! icon? Get on board Pirate fans. It is OK to be optimistic.

“That kid is a monster,” Clark said. “He’s gonna be a future NBA player. He finishes with both hands. He gets every rebound, whether it’s around [the rim] or whether it bounces out. He plays hard. He screens hard. He catches lobs, he catches everything actually.”

It will be a learning curb and potential foul issues will probably have to be overcome early. But no one who has seen him hasn't come away impressed as all hell.

Jerry C, when I spoke to him raved about the big man and firmly believes he will be a Big East star down the road. Between him and Clark you might have your two favorite Pirates this season.

The one thing I feel fairly certain of this year is that the Pirates will be a MUCH more entertaining team to watch this year. Clark and Hines are players that are worth the price of admission to watch. Both will have their learning curves and both will struggle at times but when they are good they are going to bring a smile to people's faces.

I've watched a lot of NJ HS basketball over the years and Hines was as entertaining a player as I've seen in a while. He plays with such power and intensity and looks to break the backboard on every dunk.

Add Clark with stunning quickness and change of direction and if the 2 can develop some chemistry they will be a dangerous duo. Will we get enough from the rest of the team, especially from a shooting standpoint? That remains to be seen but Pirate games will not be boring, embarrassing, slogs like last year.

Gets me excited for the season!

O/U 1.5 hours before one of our very own posters criticizes piratecrew for giving him the nickname “baby Shaq”
That was his nickname in high school. At least that’s what I was told last year when I posted on our boards that he was supposedly committing to us.

Plus, why would anyone critique that nickname already, or ever? I mean we just lived the Baby Jokic and Baby Mamu experience.

My point is that it doesn’t matter where the nickname came from. I guarantee as soon as the guy has a bad game a predictable amount of posters will come on this site and say something to the effect of “remember when posters on this site said he was Shaq 2.0”
Like clockwork they will project their frustrations of SHU bball on piratecrew.

Love? I'm laughing at how ridiculous it is. The preseason hype machine is in full effect around here once again. Lots of people will end up disappointed again.

Unfortunately Baby Jokic and Baby Mamu never had one good game rather than just one bad game. Hines is legit. He’ll get there…just a matter of when. Clark will be a big asset on the offensive side to help. Question is how fast can he pick it up on the defense side.

I am in no way comparing him to Patrick Ewing, but if we recall Patrick’s first season he was all over the place on defense and out of position a lot.

Do you think there is more optimism or pessimism around here regarding SHU bball for this season and the future?

It’s like that one episode of the Office when all the employees found out that the branch was closing and they would be out of a job, but Michael made them play the murder mystery game as a distraction.
Let us have some freakin joy!!

Are the optimists really going to be more disappointed than the pessimists if we stink again? I think we will all be equally disappointed.

There is a 3rd category. Those of us that try to keep it real based on last year and past years when lots of people went over board with unrealistic expectations just based on practice and player resumes.

In addition to the crash season last year, the team was coming off the NIT Championship which was a feel good ending to a very good season (even with disappointing no NCAA bid). We thought Sha would bring some magic with the 4 star retreads and depth. So I get the hangover of being gun shy from last year.

This year hinges on Bud and Hines. Last year was Dual, Harmon and Middleton which turned out really bad.

There is no reason to think praise of Hine is hype unless you hate all praise related to SHU hoops.

If anyone thought Gus was going to be Baby Jokic they need their head handed to him. Both are relatively unathletic white guys. One is an NBA all star and the other was a real good HS player. Hines is for real.

Yeah, I think the optimism is getting a little too high. Better players than last year, almost certainly. Enough talent to consistently win or be competitive? I’m not so sure.

Not sure I understand. Even the most optimistic posters are projecting a .500 season with 5-8 Big East victories.

How is that overly optimistic? When in fact I think that ceiling is a realistic one.

And half of the optimism is based on the Big East being down not the Hall being all that.

I dont understand why a SHU fan is upset with other SHU fans speaking more optimistically in preseason than might be warranted. No one is making you use their opinions to make some bets.

Enjoy these pre-season articles and especially the fact that we, Seton Hall landed a huge, highly recruited kid who could be our center for the foreseeable future. When was the last time we got a center like this? Enjoy this and stop worrying about his nickname.

Can't wait to see Hines on the court and hopefully seeing him for years to come in Pirate Blue.

After last year's mess it's perfectly reasonable to have a wait & see attitude. There were a lot of previously loyal fans that became totally disengaged from the program last year & there are plenty more who are currently on the fence.

I agree. But I dont see "we are gonna suck again" as wait and see. But to each his own.

He’s going to open eyes. The hype is real on this player, at least.

Good thing we had cash sitting around since the revenue sharing cleared late. Enough to lure him out.

Remember the player that changed the program for PJ? His name was Mark Bryant a PF who helped turn things around for us. Who knows - maybe Hines is that guy for Sha? We can only hope but either way I really like this recruit a lot. If he can learn to stay out of foul trouble he could be a contributor in Year 1 for us.

I am thrilled with the potential of Hines and delighted we got him. But I really don't like this Baby Shaq stuff. We haven't even see him in a Pirate uniform and we've already hyped him with an over-the-top nickname. Nicknames like that can easily become a millstone if the player gets off to a slow or poor start. I much prefer it when our team and individual players have modest expectations and then exceed them.

There is way too much optimism on this board, especially given the state of the program. Always has been. The future of SH basketball has never been darker if you look at the big picture, but many will keep whistling past the graveyard.

The board historically leans optimistic because we are fans and tend to see things through the lens of a fan, downplaying any criticisms.

Some would call SPK pessimistic but I think he’s a good bellwether as an objective poster.

There are some things to be optimistic this year in Clark and Hines, but the rest of the roster is below average BE just based on history/stats. The universities leadership issues are still there as well.
