Mild…of course I’m only predicted how this shakes out. So are you only predicting. I believe Schiano is completely committed to GW for 24, so much so that he will not bring anyone in to compete. Time will tell.

There are plenty of much higher rated QBs than GW in the portal to target. Look at the big list. Would you agree, that if my prediction proves accurate and no portal qb in the rankings comes here then Schiano wasn’t looking for one and already decided it’s GW’s job ?

If not that, then what would be the reason ? They’d rather go to Memphis or UTEP ?

How do people forget Mike Teel's great season under GS? Anyone think GS thought Teel threw too much? That he'd rather just run it? GS just doesn't like risking turnovers. And it took GS1.0 awhile to get an offense together that could do more than just hand it off to Ray Rice.

Every head coach wants a good QB who will not turn the ball over and get points in the red zone. GS included.
I agree.

But no-interest in any of them ? C’mon now. If looks like a duck, smells like a duck, walks like a duck, it’s a duck. Stop making excuses for not getting anyone better. Only reason would be not wanting to. And now with the extension, even less motivation.
I don’t make excuses for players or coaches. Why would I?

Nothing is walking or looking or smelling like a duck here. We have a QB from the portal on a visit this weekend. Which means the staff are interested. And who says the staff isn‘t interested in anybody else, hasn’t reached out to anyone else?

He didn't really play well this year at all though. He doesn't seem significantly better than Gavin looking at his stats. 🤷
This kid is the prototype of a GS QB , mediocre at best , what would you expect from Coach Ground & Pound.

I’m predicting only that it’s more likely than not that GW starts next year. I’m not saying we won’t bring in a QB in the portal. I think we probably will but hat whomever we are able to land, no matter the stats, it’s still unlikely they will beat out GW for the starting spot at he start of the season. I‘ve already listed a bunch of reasons for why I think that’s the case.

If this kid that’s visiting knows how to run our offense, that gives him a better chance to win the starter job than most other QBs who would consider coming here and have experience with our level of competition. Doesn’t mean he’ll win the competition either. Just that he has a better chance.

But what I can safely predict is that GS will do his best to win as many games as possible. Because there’s no logical reason not to do so.

True, but I am asking if you agree that if no one comes, with so many available, that he really wasn’t seriously looking ?

We don’t know if Athan asked to come to discuss (asking KC a favor) or if it was on Schiano’s invite for a possible offer.

This doesn’t make sense. Athan would be the starter on many group of 5 teams. He doesn’t need favors. He showed real promise as a frosh after his first game. Someone is going to give him a fresh start.

a favor to discuss/explore possible RU opportunities. Happens all the time with former ‘employees’ (& players).

But my question is still unanswered. With so many portal QBs rated a lot higher than GW, if none come here does that mean GS wasn’t actually looking ? I think it does. We might not get our first choice, second choice etc but if nobody at all comes then I don’t think GS was looking for one.

And that’s my prediction. No portal qb bc GW is already picked and Sheppard is already QB 2

That’s not going to happen. We will add another QB. The question is who and what level of prior experience, not if.

I spoke to a Minnesota insider this afternoon.
Said Athan’s father is heavily involved {too much} during his time there .. NIL, Playing time, etc.
QB was given the talk at the end of the season by Coach Fleck.. so the writing was on the wall.
If he comes here hope he excels.

It seems like Kirk is interested in his own kid… for better or worse. Who said anything about which kid we would go after? You said we wouldn’t go after anyone other than many an FCS back up or something like that. The starting QB on Minny is taking the time to visit us. He wouldn’t waste his time if he was being told we are looking for a back up for Wimsatt. I think you know this much.
I think you’re 100% correct, if Kirk is going to go down at some point because the QB & offensive lack of production , he would much rather do it on his own terms with his own choice of starting QB , it makes a lot of sense & it definitely tells me from what I can see that GW is on very thin ice or on his way out in the not so distant future.

and a real QB1 competition ?

Yes - but that’s not even the point you’ve been driving. You keep saying to people when we bring in nobody that will be the proof that Greg tripled down on Wimsatt only. I’m saying your wrong because there’s pretty much zero chance that we won’t bring in at least one more QB who is not a preferred walk on / high school reach kid (I.e. it will be someone with meaningful prior FBS experience or an FCS starter with good numbers at minimum).

This would be true even if everything you were saying about Wimsatt being a lock turns out right. Everyone laughs when I mention the need to replace Langhan in terms of QB depth. Did you not see that Minny just paid a 3rd string kid 30k in NIL to stick around and play in a damn bowl game???

In 2023, Greg didn’t only have Evan and a true frosh. He also had a TE who started at QB in the BIG for more than half a season. Schiano is the most risk averse coach on the planet. He is not going into the 2024 season with a roster that consists of only one player (Wimsatt) who has ever taken a meaningful collegiate level snap.

You’re sure he brings someone in off the portal. I’m not. I look at it the other way. If GW is a lock (which you agree is a possibility) why would someone come ?

I’m not saying it’s a possibility. I’m saying that even if it were true (which it’s not), Greg wouldn’t reveal that.

I am extremely skeptical of this insider's information. As I am of all this sort of inside information.

Head coaches put themselves at unnecessary risk by sharing stuff like that outside an extremely small circle of trusted people who can be trusted not to be leaking it outside that circle. Making most such leaks more rumor and innuendo generated by family or friends of players and their families than actual knowledge by true program "insiders".

Leakers within the program don't typically get to be insiders but when it does happen, and they leak something, they get fired or, at best, are never trusted with such information again.

Which leaves the player and player's family and close friends as potential sources of information for "insiders". And in those cases, you only ever hear one side of the story, one perspective, with no way to validate its accuracy.

IF this kid wants to be here you take him. I saw more in that one game highlight tape then I have seen from any of our qb’s in 5 years. Kid saw the field, makes a quick decision, throws a nice slant, and hit more receivers in that one game than our qb’s have in their entire season. Not to mention there is true RPO action, he can take a hit and knows how to check down.

Why wouldn’t his parents be involved even at the D1 level… are you saying McCord’s dad is also the problem ? Maybe the head coach should have noticed an over concerned parent.

You don't kick the tires if you didn't have some interest. You really think this staff lied to him and told him, sure fly here on your own dime and visit. But behind closed doors Schiano said, we have no interest in this kid Gavins it, let's just humor him?
Do you still believe he wasn’t just kicking the tires, shopping for an offer ?

I hope that the coaching staff has a backup plan, in case he doesn't (and a backup to the backup).
Again, why would anyone wanting to compete for QB1 come here when Golden Gavin has already been anointed starter for the next 2 years ? We saw there wasn’t a real competition last year (competition over on the first day) and neither will there be in the future.

If this coaching staff is dumb enough to anoint GW as the starter the next two years after how he played this year, without trying to bring in anyone better, they deserve to be fired on the spot. And at that point Hobbs deserves it too for the extension.
Point is, why would they bring in someone else without the intention of seeing if they can beat out Gavin?

Promises made and fits the philosophy. Did they offer ? Did he meet with Schiano ? The kid probably wanted to discuss his QB future and also opportunities for his brother with KC.

GS quoted saying he has not discussed with Golden Gavin bringing another QB to compete for QB1. I believe that. Why would he? There’s nothing to discuss. They have an understanding: no QB competition.

No, don’t know. Just my take given the way Golden Gavin has been treated. Obvious favoritism. GS will double down on his 2023 bogus competition decision. He’s all in with his golden QB.

The past is prologue.

Just put the ahole on ignore. Feeding the troll gives him what he wants.
It’ll work itself out soon and he’ll look like a fool. After the bowl game it’ll quickly become obvious that we’re going to add to the QB room. It’s not going to be a major focus now as it’s a distraction. There will be plenty of options available to enhance the room with experience.

You do know I’m not talking about ‘adding to the QB room’. I’m talking about not bringing in someone to compete for QB1. Hence, promises and favoritism. Hence, Golden Gavin.

It was said here ‘would quickly become obvious’ after the Minn. QB’s visit. How quickly is quickly ? You think he even got an offer ?
