Brandon WestonPowell, Conway, and the kid that transferred to Rhode Island…man none of them panned out.
Jahari Long is having a nice year at GMU. Granted he’s in his early 30s now, but nonetheless….
After the class of 2014, Willard struck out on HS recruits probably 60% of the time, but the ones he hit on were pretty good like Sandro, Rhoden, Powell, Samuel, Cale. He also got good players in the transfer portal like Ike, Gill, McKnight, Aiken, Richmond etc. He found a way to keep a veteran team on the floor before you can transfer annually. He was far from a perfect coach, but at this point it feels like doing what he did in terms of getting to the tournament at Seton Hall deserves a statue.Willard struck out on all three…he either knew that and was one of the reasons why he left
They didn't work out a huge percentage of the time. He had multiple classes that completely bombed.Funny how Willard always got the blame when a recruit didn't work out but the lead assistant always got the credit when they did work out.
So do most coaches. They didn't work out a huge percentage of the time. He had multiple classes that completely bombed.
Name some that worked out as bad as the Myles Carter class or this class spoken of in this thread, just off the top of my head. Not to mention the Tommy Maayan years and Canarias mess aside from eventually Auda; not to mention all of the debacles like Aquille Carr and people who never ended up on campus. We've been horrible recruiting HS talent and got by on transfers. Willard fared far better with transfers than HS recruits. So do most coaches.
Atleast MAM and Timberlake didnt come here they were bustsFunny how Willard always got the blame when a recruit didn't work out but the lead assistant always got the credit when they did work out.
He recruited over most of his HS recruits through the portalThey didn't work out a huge percentage of the time. He had multiple classes that completely bombed.
Exactly. Which bolsters my point. We rarely got any HS players that were worthwhile. So many totally wasted classes under Willard. He recruited over most of his HS recruits through the portal
No the point was have a team built with veterans, more physically mature, and more mentally mature players. High school players were an after thought in the Willard system here if you paid attention. Almost every year had 1 player stay and the rest transferred out and we replaced them with talent. 2016 Powell, 2017 Cale/Mamu, 2018 Rhoden, 2019 Samuel. It worked. But after the class of 2014 we weren't crushing it with freshmen talent. Powell was the only freshman who got real time after that. Everyone else saw minimal time. It's kind of tough to recruit freshmen when you don't play them because you constantly have very good juniors and seniors all over the place.Exactly. Which bolsters my point. If YOU paid attention, my point was we have had a ton of horrible recruiting classes under Willard. Pretty simple. Which you yourself just admitted here. Not sure what the argument is about since we appear to agree. His HS recruits mostly were terrible and didn't pan out here, and many of them anywhere. No the point was have a team built with veterans, more physically mature, and more mentally mature players. .
When you look at what we did from a trade perspective as far as transfers go, we replaced Brodie with Ike, Walker with Q. Nelson with Aiken. All upgrades in talent. Not something to complain about.

Pretty bad when a Big East recruit can't at least have a decent career at a low major. REALLY bad when this is a repeating pattern. Obviously he "recruited over" them with transfers, that's my whole point. They were all bad, of course they get replaced.
