I'm about half way through Danny's new book. Interesting read. Talks a good deal about his time at Seton Hall and his struggles. Most of it I already knew but it was interesting to read what he was thinking during that time. Talked about his rough time working up the ranks at Rutgers and then at St.Benedicts. Mentioned he turned down his first chance to be a college HC at Marist because his wife couldn't think of leaving Jersey.
Talked about how he tried to quit UConn after 2 days on the job to go back to URI. Talked about how his family agonized over the Lakers decision. The parts I found interesting where when he gives some insight into how he's developed as a coach and has changed as the rules have changed.
Having been a defensive-minded coach his whole career, he realized after getting bounced out of the tournament in 1st round twice at UConn that he had to change the way he coached. He went to school studying offensive concepts from a wide variety of sources. Successful college programs, NBA teams, a lot of EuroLeague concepts, even successful NFL offenses he looked at for inspiration.
Regarding players, he uses a 3rd party analytical team that targets players with the attributes he wants. They scout every level of college during the season looking for these players and presents him with a list of top candidates before they even enter the Portal. Same with HS players.
Mentioned the significance of getting Sanogo to commit. Said he was the Alpha player and personality he needed. Also said he basically wrapped up him and Samson Johnson on the same recruiting trip to Elizabeth. Willard and Grant left at the altar.
