I watched the UConn Boston College game tonight and I know it's early but UConn did not play very well . Reed and Demary were out with injuries but the BC team would struggle in the ASun conference . In the first half BC had 12 turnovers and looked completely lost . With about 12 minutes to go in the second half BC had a lead . UConn kept shooting 3s and while I don't know the percentage it certainly wasn't good . I was surprised how poorly Karraban shot from 3 . Miss after miss . He hit a couple late in the game . The amazing aspect of the poor 3 point shooting was about half of those shots were uncontested . No defender within 3 or 4 feet .

The transfer from Dayton, Smith , looked like a nice defensive player .

What this shows is any or all of the following:

The BE is way overrated
Intra Squad Games and practices are no indicator
Pre Season scrimmages with other teams are meaningless

Preseason scrimmages are, in most part, completely meaningless and no indication on how a team will ultimately perform. Uconn is loaded IMO and a legit contender. And, because of continuity, I think they will gel quicker than others bringing in more new faces.

I would never consider a scrimmage meaningless. It serves both staffs a major purpose. However, if you want to say the score is meaningless, then I would tend to agree in most cases.

Yes, that's what I meant. The score/outcome is pretty meaningless and not an indicator of much.

I would include yesterday was October 13.

If either team was in mid-season form I would be shocked.

Also, throw in UConn was missing two potential starters.

Also, lost in a lot of this thread's conversation is that Uconn actually won by 19.

I was talking about making something out of the score/results. Sure for the coaches and players it was meaningful to have a game against someone other than your teammates. However trying to draw some conclusions from the results is pointless.

Good point. And not even potential starters IMO. Demary is their PG, big-ticket transfer. He was considered one of the better players in the portal, and Danny is viewing him as a Tristan Newton part II (someone with combo-guard tendencies that can be a primary ball handler for significant minutes). Basically everyone was interested in him when he put his name in the portal, and based on the Uconn podcast he chose them over St. John's, as Pitino really wanted the kid. Also, Tarris Reed is Uconn's only experienced 5, I believe. So he's a definite starter too and in my opinion will be one of the better scoring and rebounding bigs in the league this year.

People only draw conclusions from the actual results in October when they want to troll or have an agenda. Sure, it can an indicator of a bad sign or a good sign, but then you have Cuse losing to a Division II team preseason and going to the Final 4 the same year, along with numerous other examples.

I'm about half way through Danny's new book. Interesting read. Talks a good deal about his time at Seton Hall and his struggles. Most of it I already knew but it was interesting to read what he was thinking during that time. Talked about his rough time working up the ranks at Rutgers and then at St.Benedicts. Mentioned he turned down his first chance to be a college HC at Marist because his wife couldn't think of leaving Jersey.

Talked about how he tried to quit UConn after 2 days on the job to go back to URI. Talked about how his family agonized over the Lakers decision. The parts I found interesting where when he gives some insight into how he's developed as a coach and has changed as the rules have changed.

Having been a defensive-minded coach his whole career, he realized after getting bounced out of the tournament in 1st round twice at UConn that he had to change the way he coached. He went to school studying offensive concepts from a wide variety of sources. Successful college programs, NBA teams, a lot of EuroLeague concepts, even successful NFL offenses he looked at for inspiration.

Regarding players, he uses a 3rd party analytical team that targets players with the attributes he wants. They scout every level of college during the season looking for these players and presents him with a list of top candidates before they even enter the Portal. Same with HS players.

Mentioned the significance of getting Sanogo to commit. Said he was the Alpha player and personality he needed. Also said he basically wrapped up him and Samson Johnson on the same recruiting trip to Elizabeth. Willard and Grant left at the altar.

There is at least one conclusion in your first post in the thread.

Maybe, maybe not.

Some coaches honor their returning players. Others, who is working the hardest in practice. And still others start their expected opening regular season lineup.

I believe Sha will more likely emulate (not entirely) what he will do once the regular season begins in the next scrimmage at home vs St Joe's.
