—West Virginia head coach Neal Brown said he stands by what he said in the post game. Not pleased with how they played and had a very poor start with a lot of it being self-inflicted. They didn’t do anything to lose the game. They battled back 24-17 which is a credit to their guys with stacking some plays together. But they couldn’t get off the field and gave up an explosive play. They had a coverage call right where the ball should have been completed. The mistakes stem from the lack of details and lack of fundamentals. Poor situationally awareness was an issue and you have to make plays. You have to make game winning plays and they didn’t make those.

—Special teams they were absolutely dominated and it was embarrassing to him. The blocked punt they schemed it and got them there. The kickoff return was a phenomenal kick by Evan Staley but they missed an easy tackle at the 25. The first half they had an opportunity to block a punt and they had too much air between the punt shield and their guy. He didn’t hug it tight and they missed a field goal.

—Defensively they played poorly. Didn’t get aligned to their big sets. Offensively they couldn’t get out of their own way in the first half. They couldn’t do it. The drive before half where they had to settle for a field goal they should have scored touchdowns on three plays in a row and didn’t. They can’t make routine plays that they need to make. The entire game wasn’t good enough. If you’re going to win the games you have to play better than that especially on the road.

—Texas is coming in and it’s not too late to play good football. Brown said it’s extremely frustrating about the lack of consistency and nobody is more pissed off than him.

—Brown said he doesn’t see a Texas team that’s quit. They have a bunch of young guys. They’re specialists are good and Dicker is as good as anybody. He’s playing his position as well as anybody is playing their position. They’ve done a nice job blocking punts. Offensively schematically they do a good job of changing their looks up and a lot of motions and shifts pre snap. They really stress you. Casey Thompson does a good job stressing you and making plays with his feet. In the backfield they have options behind Robinson and they want to run the ball. Xavier Worthy is playing as well as any freshman in the country. They play in 11 or 12 personnel a lot. They’re a talented group even through this losing streak. Defense they are massive up front. Veteran group in the secondary.

—Brown said they are bringing back some of the Orange Bowl team which will be cool to see and senior day. True Blue for the Texas game. Brown offers his thoughts and prayers to Sam Huff and his family.

—This Week is about us. They have to play quality football. They’re going to get them ready to go and try to win.

—Nobody feels sorry for them. The old days of building a roster and having depth at every position is not the reality anymore. You’re going to have the guys that don’t get immediate results that are going to look elsewhere. So you’re going to have veterans and young guys. Scottie Young will play some linebacker and Saint McLeod is going to play more. Exree Loe is out for the year he had surgery. Sean Ryan they are cautiously optimistic that he will play.

—Greene practiced yesterday and will be available.

—Brown said you have to take the emotions out when it comes to making redshirt decisions. They go through and say who will be live and who will not.

—Brown said anytime those wins happen like Kansas did last week you have to make an extraordinary amount of plays. anytime you have an upset over 20 plus there a bunch of people that make plays.

—It’s hard for me to keep up. It’s been a trying time for the seniors. He isn’t pressing them to make final decisions. At some point they will and he will talk to them.

—it’s hard to develop real quality leadership. It’s a trend and he doesn’t know why. It’s still important but the roster issues they’ve got plenty of spots. They’ll sign the max number. When guys transfer you have a pretty good idea but there is always going to be one or two you don’t see.

—They have to know where Worthy is at.

"The old days of building a roster and having depth at every position is not the reality anymore. You’re going to have the guys that don’t get immediate results that are going to look elsewhere."

That's the new reality. It used to be the guys came in and stuck around and some were 2nd team but they mostly stuck around and provided depth. Now if they're 2nd team, they transfer out because they want to play. Meanwhile, guys that are 2nd team elsewhere transfer in to WVU because they want to play. But of course, they'll either sit or else they'll play and someone else that was already at WVU and expecting to play will have to sit and those guys will wish they had transferred. It's a messy situation.

"it’s hard to develop real quality leadership. It’s a trend and he doesn’t know why."

The reason why is leadership is a thing that happens in a group or a team but the portal creates more of a "me first" mentality and it's hard to have leaders when everybody is in it for themselves first and the team second. This isn't a statement about WVU but rather about college football teams in general.
