What is going on with football recruiting?

Then going off of your line of thinking no team should be happy with recruiting for the 2025 class, correct?

Hard to put a lot of faith in recruiting rankings unless you're a team that retains a lot of its players.

Call it cautiously optimistic rather than happy if someone signs a good class? Thinking no one should be happy is taking it to an extreme, imo.

But something I didn't spell out before. If we can't be sure a signee will commit, or that a commit will spend more than a year here, I am quite cautious on celebrating recruits that haven't even signed yet.

Throw in Jontae Gilbert (another 4* DB) and that probably rounds out our DB class with 3 4* players and one 3*.

We lead for 4* OL Shed Sarratt and Jaylen Gilchrist

Taking a swing at 4* OL Juan Gaston who is from Georgia and a big time talent; he's been on campus a few times and is coming to the spring game

We are taking big swings at big time 4* / borderline 5* LBs Zayden Walker and Tavion Wallace. Zayden will hopefully be at our spring game and has been on campus close to 10 times.

We are taking a big swing at high 4* DE Jared Smith and he seems to be receptive to us

In decent shape with 3* DE Taeshawn Alston out of North Carolina

Just had Anthony Addison commit this week who is a higher upside DE (3-4*)

Taking a swing at 4* WR Adrian Wilson who is from Texas and plans to be in for the spring game

Battling w/ UNC for 4* WR Malik Clark who is from SC

So you see, we aren't in desperation mode as you seem to paint it out to be.

I will say it's a bit concerning with our interior DL class so we need to turn that around.
A lot of "taking a swing" in that post. We aren't the only teams taking a swing at those players. Gaston has been to Tennessee 4 times on unofficial visits. That means he paid his own way there. Apparently UT is taking a big swing at him too. Walker has been on visits to everyone multiple times. Until they sign the NIL and show up they are no more a gamecock player than a player on the Clemson roster is.

The "offer" list is also misleading. Lots of schools make "offers" that are non committable to HS kids in 9th, 10th even 11th grade. Bama, UGA, Texas, Ohio State, all the top programs are well known for pulling the offer late if they get the guy they really want.

In fan's minds; every recruit that commits is a game changer, every 3 star is underrated and should be a 4 star, every 4 star should be a 5 star, every 5 star is going to have an immediate impact. The reality is; out of every signing class of 25 or so players if a coach can get 6-8 good contributors, that is a good class. Incoming freshmen are a total crap shoot. All of them were probably the best player on the field for every game of their HS career. When they get to college they aren't even the best player at their position on their team most of the time. Some can make the jump and a lot can't. That is why you see 100+ players dressed out on the sidelines and maybe 30-35 actually step on the field during live play. Every single one of the players dressed out was one of if not the best player on their HS team.

It kind of feels like the few moments in the Titanic movie after the ship had hit the iceberg but the passengers were unaware what had happened and everything was carrying on as normal, even though by that point it was academic that the ship was going to sink.

Our recruiting sucks at the moment. The biggest news we've had recently is flipping a 3* from Wake and losing a commitment from a top '26 QB. Yeah, I know his commitment didn't mean much, but it's bad optics and optics are important in recruiting. Picking up a middling QB and losing a top QB.

Recruiting was supposed to be an area that Beamer was going to distinguish himself. He has picked up a couple notable ones in Nyck and Stewart, so kudos for that, but we pi**ed away Nyck's first year with him primarily pursuing track and who knows how he'll fully make the transition to WR.

Our '25 class has two low 4* guys and 13 three star guys. That is simply not a recipe for success in the SEC. In a class full of 3*, you might end up with one or two who outperform their ranking, but most will not. Yes, I know we have a few big guys still "considering" us, but we always do. I could make an all-time college football roster from 5* guys who had us in their top 10 but went elsewhere. We have 19 commits in the '25 class (including the kicker and long snapper) so it's not like our class is just taking shape.

We are presently 14th in the SEC for the '25 class.

I like Beamer and hope he can find success here, but unless he's the best developer of talent in the history of the game he's going to be toast based on his recruiting.

I forget if it's Lindy's or Athlon magazine that puts out quotes, anonymously, from opposing coaches regarding the particular program. Quotes on Beamer, this year, are that he is over his head at this position. OK, I get it....can you trust the magazine regarding anonymous quotes? On the other hand, a lot of us have doubts about Beamer for various reasons, WITHOUT reading those quotes. The 2 games in 2022, Tennessee and Clemson, more than doubled his salary with a nice extension. Other than that, there is not a whole lot to hang ones' hat on Beamer.

Would you say Beamer's entire tenure to date is based on those 2 wins? Take out those 2 games and what do you have?

Entering year 4, his whole tenure is based on 2 games. If not for those games, his seat would be scorching.

It's still really early with regards to rankings and stars. Several of these 3 stars could be 4 stars by the end of next football season. Personally, I think they put star rankings on these kids a little too early IMO. With the exception of the 5 star guys, many of these recruits probably didn't get on Varsity until 10th Grade and probably didn't start to make an impact until last year. The senior year is an important step in a HS school player's development. That is why they re-shuffle things several times when it comes to rankings during that year. In looking at the film of a lot of guys from our class, the difference in them being a 3 star or a 4 star is weight. Addison is a good player. He is just 215 lbs right now. We have several guys like that. We have been a mid program for several years now. Unless, you just have an unusual crop of players in-state, we are going to have to build on a lot of 3 star guys and that is just the way it goes until we can start winning on the field a little more.

With the loss of Earls we drop from 27th to 38th nationally and from 11th to 12th in the SEC.

My tongue was firmly planted in cheek when I referred to Beamer's "coaching". I agree with you both AC and GJ.
