So you’re saying he can neither recruit or develop one… He has to be given one?
That was going to be my first response. . .
Find, would have been a better choice of words
An older (or is it younger?) version of me would have had the same response as Brisket, but I knew what you meant. My comprehension has improved, and maybe I'm getting less argumentative as I age. 😂

Finding one is tough, and Jim Harbaugh, the QB himself saw that.
Speight, O'Korn, Patterson, Milton III, McNamara, and finally McCarthy is when he hit it, seven years into his return to Michigan as head coach.

Joe Milton III is now at Tennessee and he is tabbed to be the starter. Will he be an example of a QB who blooms in his final year?

For us to be able to land a top notch QB, we need a Big, Mobile Offensive Line, who will effectively protect the quarterback, just like Michigan’s. We also need big, agile receivers who will go up and get the ball, like Korey Duff. And a big tight end who will do the same.

Quarterbacks want to come to places to put up big numbers and be drafted. We haven’t been that place. But we soon will be, beginning with Surace, who will be the first QB in a long time, to have adequate tools at his disposal. His success will pave the way for other good QBs to follow.

Its painfully clear no one can silence the critics of Pike OR Schiano - because they never shut the hell up!
Lol

And lets be clear - winning wont do it either. The "acceptable" goal posts will just continually move.
His supporters never shut up either. Who started this post?

Yea and that goes back to the difficulty in finding qbs for a prostyle system. A system that is more qb friendly and easier to pickup might help you "find" one or for that matter they may come to you...see Longo at Wisconsin.

Waiting for @NickRU714 to respond, as he always has interesting counterpoints.

But I agree with you. Can any of Mike Leach's kids coach college football? I think he had all daughters, but I don't care if they can coach air raid.

I don't think he deserves a raise for doing his job, but six wins would be a remarkable accomplishment and a sign that he does have program recovery on the timeline that many talk about. I don't expect six wins, if we're being honest...

From my standpoint, Schiano has earned an extension. This is the best team since 2014, easily.

Now I just hope the results on the field reflect his efforts. If that’s the case, he will get it.

OK then, we agree on verbiage, just not sure an extension is warranted until after year 5. Also, maybe Greg is not interested in an extension. He will be 60 at the end of this contract, and he has made nice money. Other coaches have called it quits at/before 60. I do know that this college HC is a hard driving, long hours job. Greg may not want to continue until his mid 60s. He has not addressed this to my knowledge.

Not at all remarkable in year 4. Year 1 or 2, sure. Year 3, maybe. By year 4 it is not the least bit remarkable. 6 or more should be expected by now.

Few will argue your points. But it is worth pointing out Schiano isn't asking for a raise or extension off a yet-to-occur 6 win season. It was a hypothetical situation posed by Uber glass-is-half-full Al. So the apparent angst towards the coach should be directed elsewhere - at least for this situation. Lol
No angst. And trust me. His agent will be asking for one. I promise you.

We have some fans with very low expectations and standards for whom 6 wins is almost as good as 12.

I don't disagree with that. But I was only comparing last year to this year. I don't see how last year's team is going to transition into a bowl team this year, and would be shocked if they did. It would be a miracle...

Greg wins 6, they will give him an extension of at least a couple of years. Question is, what kind of raise would he deserve?

I think a bump to $6.1M, which is the same amount Marylands Coach makes is reasonable.
None
The administration should expect some results at this point

Schiano needs 10 wins in the next 2 years or he will be fired after 2024. Rutgers would be on the hook for ~$9M at that point. It will be less in reality because he'd probably get a college DC gig paying $2M a year for two years so the total hit for RU is something we could stomach.

see him for what he is which is a d3 coach

Who do you think is better qualified to evaluate the abilities of a football coach. Tennessee fans or Bill Belichick?
Quoting Belichick on Schiano:
"He's one of the very best coaches I think in our profession."
Lol. Plenty of great coaches are terrible judges of coaching talent. As a RU fan, you should know this well

Greg sucks, change my mind, I'll listen

Are you saying 10 wins in 2 seasons or 10 win season? If he has a 10 win season next year or the year after that, we won’t be able to afford him.

Belichick thought having Matt Patricia and Joe Judge as his OCs last season was a good idea.

He's not exactly the best resource lately.

10 wins in total across 2 seasons.

So 4 wins this year and 6 next year, or 5 and 5 or 3 and 7 (and so on).

NONE!!! That’s his job!!! You’re going to extend him for one 6-6 record after three seasons after 500? Now if he goes 7-5 in 2024 after getting 6 wins in 2023, then you might have something. Still not better than Locksley but still might have something.

Theyre not going to have him fewer than 4 seasons remaining on his contract because it would put us at a big disadvantage recruiting.

What do you mean will be asking. The agent has been asking since last season. He’s very likely going to get it, as long as the minimum performance threshold is realized. All that remains to be finalized is the details.

My god why would you extend him now? Unless we show a pulse on offense this year, finding a quality QB will be impossible. No guarantee Surace will be here at this point (and who knows what he is anyway). Win 6+ games with an offense that can score 27+, then talk extension. Anything less time to cut bait.

when a coach has fewer than 4 years remaining on his deal, it becomes more difficult to recruit. Recruits want to see stability.

He will probably get an extension, solely for the sake of recruiting. I don’t think he’d deserve a raise but wouldn’t be surprised if he got a relatively modest one.
until he puts up a winning season, extension shouldn't even be discussed.
If he doen't win but recruits well, see how his replacxement does with the talent and if a winner them Greg's replacement gets to talk to Hobbs

Greg deserves a chance to prove himself and the time dto do so, but needs to have Rutgers in another before even thinking about giving him an extension and a 6-6 season this year must be followed up with another winning season before Hobbs discusses extension.

No one's paying him 2M a year if he gets canned here. Plus, half of outrageous ($4M) is still outrageous. And, Schiano wouldn't take a job for much lower than what he's due here. No reason to.

So what extension is HC Schiano getting with a 2-10 season?
If results don't matter - only not having 4 years left.
Then he's getting one anyway, right?

Why didn't we extend HC Ash before 2019? How could he be expected to recruit with less than 5 years on his contract?

Plus no one presently needs to use contract length when negatively recruiting against Rutgers.

So stupid as usual Fieldhouse Al
1. Yes let’s extend a failure coach, otherwise recruiting will suffer. It’s a shame we fired Ash early and hurt recruiting.
2. What recruits would come to Schiano’s losing program anyway ?

Ash got an extension but it was not guaranteed. schiano could get same if he doesn’t win 6.

Look at our ‘24 recruiting class and you will see the caliber of kids that will turn things around. These kids chose to come to Schiano’s losing program and will turn it around.
