When is the last time a final four team failed to make the playoffs the following year?

Actually I would think it might happen fairly often, because quite often a team is senior-dominated and builds to that one great season. Some examples that might fit what you are asking about would be Bath County in the years after the Phillips brothers left or Eastern Montgomery after that great passing quarterback graduated. And of course Wilson could be facing that possibility this year. I don't recall what Buffalo Gap did A.P. (After Pickle) but they could be another possible example.

Won't see it as much now because of expanded playoffs. But prior to 2011, I agree that it would not be a rare occurrence.

Since the 2011 season with the change to 16 teams making the playoffs:

- 2011 Gretna, Goochland, Amelia, and Wilson
(2012 - Amelia lost first round; Gretna lost first round; Wilson lost in semi, Goochland champs)

- 2012 Goochland, Essex, Wilson, and John Battle
(2013 - Goochland lost in 3rd round, Essex lost in 1A finals, Wilson lost in 2nd round, Battle lost in 1st round)

- 2013 Giles, Brunswick, Riverheads, Buckingham
(2014 - Giles lost , Brunswick lost 3rd round, Riverheads lost 2nd round , Buckingham lost in 2nd round)

- 2014 Glenvar, Wilson, Richlands, Nottoway
(only time will tell.... but I am guessing the actual question is a jab at a certain team....)

Looking at the final four teams since the change over, the James River and Shenandoah districts have been well represented each year, with the JRD taking more teams at 5 and Shenandoah with 4.

Theres still hope for Wilson to make playoffs. A win over Stonewall Friday, then the rest of the way they would have to steal a win even though I think they beat Page.

Rider points will really help Wilson Memorial though. At best they are looking at a 14 seed.

Interesting so zero since 2011 when field expanded.....

I can think of some old school examples; Bath won the state in 1995 but didnt make the playoffs in 1996. PM won state in '79 but didnt make the playoffs in '80. But none in this new format. That would be quite a fall from grace for that to happen with the playoff formats the way they are now!

Fort is really bad ! Its not the kids fault . Talent is fairly balanced in all the county schools in my opinion . They need new leadership ! They need a coach that knows the game and can get the kids walking the halls on the field . This does not happen over night . Looks like a long season for the Indians and if changes don't happen next year will be the same .
