MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 5, 2017) – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s soccer teams have once again earned the Team Academic Award by the United Soccer Coaches, in recognition of outstanding performance in the classroom during the 2016-17 academic year.

The women were honored for the 16th consecutive year, while the men were recognized for the 10th year in a row.

WVU was one of 195 schools to have both its men’s and women’s programs recognized for earning a 3.0 GPA or higher last year. A total of 813 teams (282 men, 531 women) earned the award.

The Mountaineer men, with a 3.28 GPA in 2016-17, are one of six Mid-American Conference teams to be honored. The WVU women earned a 3.19 GPA and are one of nine Big 12 Conference teams to be recognized.

“I’m so proud of this team,” women’s coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “Not only do they have a standard of excellence on the field, but they also set a standard for themselves off the field, too. Education is their foundation for their futures. This award is another huge accomplishment for this team.”

“Congratulations to our student-athletes, our academic support team and our coaches on this honor,” men’s coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “It’s a goal that we strive for every year and one that’s too often overlooked. We are very proud of this achievement and proud of our student-athletes’ desire for excellence both on the field and in the classroom.”
