Buchanan Wins Ken Giles Award
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 26, 2015) – West Virginia University women’s soccer defender Kadeisha Buchanan won the Ken Giles Award, as announced at the Brampton Sports Awards on May 20.
The award, presented by The Guardian, honors the Brampton, Ontario, amateur athlete of the year.
The two-time Canadian U-20 Player of the Year, Buchanan, a rising junior, along with WVU classmate Ashley Lawrence, has been named to the Canadian National Team roster for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada, slated to open June 6. She has made 34 international appearances with Canada’s national team and is expected to start at center back.
A 2014 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy semifinalist, Buchanan is the two-time reigning Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year, as well as a two-time NSCAA All-American, earning her first career first-team award in 2014. The Mountaineers’ Team MVP, she also is a two-time All-Big 12 First Team honoree. This past season, she helped the WVU defense post 12 shutouts, two short of the program’s single-season record. She also tallied a career-high eight points (3 G, 2 A).
The Canadians will open the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup competition against China PR on Saturday, June 6, at 6 p.m. ET, at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta. The team will continue Group A play against New Zealand on Thursday, June 11, at 9 p.m. ET, also at Commonwealth Stadium. The squad will conclude group play against The Netherlands on Monday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m. ET, at Olympic Stadium, in Montreal, Quebec.
