Report: LSU extending Jay Johnson through 2032, will make him the highest-paid baseball coach in the country

Fresh off its second National Championship in three years, LSU is extending head coach Jay Johnson through the 2032 season. The extension will make him the highest-paid coach in all of college baseball.
Johnson will make more than $3 million per year, surpassing Tennessee‘s Tony Vitello‘s salary. That is according to The Advocate‘s Wilson Alexander.
LSU, which won its eighth national title this season, has emerged as the place to put college baseball players into the Major Leagues under Johnson. In just the past two MLB Drafts, LSU stars Paul Skenes, Dylan Crews, Ty Floyd, Grant Taylor, Tommy White, Kade Anderson and Chase Shores have been selected in the first two rounds.
“I said this, people were laughing at me but if you’re a pitcher and you don’t want to come here you’re out to lunch,” Johnson said on “Mik’d Up w/ Mikie Mahtook and Jared Mitchell” back in July. “The Draft, signing bonus and all that… we’ve accumulated about 12 million real quickly in the past few years. And when this Draft starts we’ll have Kade [Anderson], Anthony [Eyanson] and Chase [Shores] getting to 14 million. I feel real proud of what we’ve done on that side of the ball with coach [Nate] Yeskie and it’s been awesome to see the results and its led to championships and Major League Baseball dreams.”
Johnson jumped from Arizona to LSU prior to the 2021 season and immediately put the brand back at the top of the sport. After not winning a National Championship since 2009, Johnson quickly led the Tigers to titles in 2023 and 2025. Overall, he’s guided the program to a stellar 190-77 (68-51) record in that span.

“This was just — I’m so proud of how this team went about their business,” Johnson said after winning his second College World Series. “Because again, these guys are really smart. They know the pro prospects that some of these guys are. I think I might have even called Kendall [Rogers] and he rated us 3 in the preseason, or 4, I’m like, are you sure, that seems pretty high just because you didn’t know because it was so many new pieces.
“But they performed like national champions every single day of this. We had a great fall. They did what they needed to do in December. We had a great lead-up to the season, the four weeks leading up to the season. Great in the nonconference.”
LSU has now locked up its future Hall of Fame coach. The Tigers will no doubt continue to rule the sport for the near future.
