Earlier this month, Oregon head coach Dan Lanning took part in a May 10 commitment video for 2026 On3 Industry five-star EDGE Richard Wesley in which the pair jumped into a rooftop pool. It was the latest example of the lengths a Power Four coach will go to secure a highly coveted commitment.

Roughly two weeks later, though, Wesley backed out of his verbal pledge to both Lanning and the Ducks. He reopened his recruitment ahead of planned visits to Texas and Ohio State.

“He’s still 90% with the Ducks,” Wesley’s father, Jonathan, told On3’s Steve Wiltfong. “He’s just going through the whole process, which I think he should.”

Of course, Wesley’s abrupt decommitment hasn’t sat well with Oregon fans, and, it turns out, ESPN’s Pat McAfee. The occasionally controversial College GameDay analyst went in on the 18-year-old from Sierra Canyon (Los Angeles, Calif.) High during Thursday’s episode of The Pat McAfee Show.

“I don’t like Coach Lanning getting the run-around here by some 18-year-old,” McAfee said Thursday afternoon as the PMS crew mocked Wesley’s poolside commitment video as it was replayed on-air. “Now, I know Richard Wesley is a five-star EDGE, but this video of him committing to Oregon came two [weeks] before the decommitment, I think, is the way it was reported. … He did the whole thing and then two [weeks] later, ‘I’m not doing it anymore.’ … Remember when the coach [Tom Herman] had to send the voicemail singing Justin Bieber? Don’t do it. Can’t have it.”

Ohio State alum and former Green Bay Packers linebacker AJ Hawk added to the discussion. Hawk believes the video was Wesley’s idea saying, “Had to be the kid’s idea too: ‘Hey, coach, let’s jump in the pool.’”

“Uncle Phil (Knight) gonna be paying, we’re ready,” McAfee said, reimagining how the conversation between Lanning and Wesley may have gone down. “Jumps in the pool and two [weeks] later, ‘I’m not going there.’ … We want to let Coach Lanning know, we don’t like this. … I can’t wait to see where ol’ buddy goes. I don’t know if it’s going to be better than Oregon. I  don’t know if you’re going to get another coach that’s going to do that for you on a random Monday.”

Wesley is the No. 25 overall prospect, No. 4 overall EDGE and No. 5 player from California in the 2026 recruiting cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
