Mike Elko on life in the SEC: It's 'very similar' to the NFL

Mike Elko and the Texas A&M Aggies are off to a hot start this season. He’s had no problems adjusting to being the head man in College Station. Ever since losing to Notre Dame in their season opener, the Aggies have rattled off eight straight wins, including blowout victories over LSU (No. 8 in the country) and Missouri (No. 9 in the country). Despite switching quarterbacks, it’s been a rather seamless transition for Elko and his staff in charge of their own squad in the SEC.
On the Thursday evening edition of The Jim Rome Show, Elko explained life in the SEC. And he said it’s quite similar to the National Football League.
“Yeah, certainly no breaks. And certainly, no easy weeks. So, you know, you see a postgame speech. We walk off the field with one of the biggest wins this program has had in the last few years and you’re immediately talking about next week,” Elko explained.
“Because you know the challenge that you have, when you get on the road to South Carolina. And so, we compare it to the NFL a lot, and we think it’s very similar, just in terms of how even the teams are matched up. So, every single week, you’ve gotta bring your best or you’re gonna be at risk of getting beat. And you see that week in, week out in this conference,” Elko finished.

Texas A&M has utilized their stout defense to propel them to a 7-1 overall record. They forced three interceptions from LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier in their last game. He’s looked like one of the best quarterbacks in the country and the A&M defensive unit simply gave him way more trouble than he’s experienced all season long.
Up next, Texas A&M will be tested by the incredible pass rush of the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Gamecocks feature some of the nation’s most explosive pass rushers (Kyle Kennard and Dylan Stewart), and they’ve got the film to prove it. Texas A&M and South Carolina will face off against each other on November 2nd. Kick for that one is slated for 7:30 PM EST. The game will be nationally televised on ABC.
