A Pro Pope Post

I didn’t want Pope as the coach—and I still don’t. A little trolling is one thing, but it’s time to drop the "bullying" I would say at this point. Mark Pope clearly loves Kentucky. He moved to Lexington without hesitation, when others turned down the job or didn't want "the smoke," brought his family and is giving this everything he’s got. Even if you think he wasn’t the right hire or isn’t a perfect fit, he is trying his best. If you believe he wasn’t qualified when he was hired, it’s unrealistic to expect him to suddenly become a blue-blood, elite coach. What he is, though, is someone who loves basketball, loves Kentucky, and took on a job he knew would come with pressure—especially after everything surrounding Cal. At this point, everything’s been said. Fans and media have made their opinions clear. Now it’s time to ease up, let him breathe, and just see how it plays out. He might not be here long, so there’s no reason to make the situation worse. You don’t have to support him as the coach, but we can at least treat him with the same respect we gave him as a former player. That alone could make things easier on him—and make this season a lot more enjoyable for everyone.

Yeah, whatever OP. He has sucked so far and repeatedly has his team's unprepared at tipoff and gets down double digits a crap ton. And a coach is hired and you want to give him kudos for moving to the city where his job is? Lmao.

"He moved to Lexington, without hesitation"        Are you fucking serious? You mean it was an option to coach the University of Kentucky Men's Bball team remotely from a couch in Provo? I'm sure his $5M+ a year could get him some decent internet for some Zoom calls. Tony Soprano said "those who give respect earn respect". Pope can start earning respect by stepping down and admitting he tanked the #1 program in the country and turned it into a national laughingstock. Instead, he'll collect his paychecks, continue to be an arrogant, insufferable ass, and rant on and on about some stupid statistic showing why his way is correct. Fuck out of here with that.

You missed the entirety of the point. We agree Mark Pope shouldn't be the coach of Kentucky and he could have stayed at BYU, in Utah where it was much easier, much more low-key but he took the Kentucky job in a heartbeat, probably severely doubting his own ability. That does take some courage and it does prove his love for this University. At this point it doesn't do any good to be so harsh, as fans. His future will be determined by his success and the new AD. So i suggest you learn to deal with that.

Trust me, he doesn't doubt his ability. He's overly confident in it, and it leads to him constantly face planting.

Yeah let’s praise the guy that got millions of dollars to move back home and suck. Let’s respect the guy that made this program a national laughing stock.

Look OP -- I'd be sympathetic to your argument if Pope ever admitted his failures. No. He doubles down on his approach and comes off as a fucking idiot. Get this guy the fuck out of here.

He’s an arrogant douche that doesn’t realize how bad he sucks. My breaking point was having the audacity to compare his two years to Cal’s last 4. He really thought he was winning the fanbase over with that? He actually took the time to gather statistics to slant that the program is in a better state under him. 🤣

I think I read we were down by double digits at one point against P5 teams plus Gonzaga like 25 out of 55 games over Pope's two years. Or something like that. Unreal. How can someone defend this?

Does my OP sound like I’m trying to argue? That’s not the point of this post. Like I said: I didn’t want Pope as the coach, and I still don’t. But there’s no need to bully the guy and make things worse. His wins and losses—and the new AD—will determine everything. You can still show kindness and emotional control towards someone who isn’t the right fit for a role and is in a tough position. Like I said, he’s not a Kentucky-caliber coach, and you’ve admitted that, so why hold him to that standard? He didn’t hire himself.

Yep, and just look at yesterday. He thought he was gonna temper a Stokes whiff with an announcement of some irrelevant kid from the Sun Belt. He is THAT arrogant and THAT stupid

No. If he admitted failures and did things to improve himself and the program, you treat him with respect. He doesn't respect the program, he doesn't get any respect. He deserves to be ridiculed to the fullest and run out of town with the same vitriol that was directed at Tubby. And let's be real. Tubby was WAY better.

They won't do that, they're miserable. I understand your post, it's easy to rag on a guy when there's such a huge collective doing it already that's why the clapping monkeys here do it. The success or failure of next season determines his fate, these people just get off on being assholes.

Would you get this mad at an elementary school kid who can't dunk? Pope isn't a blue blood coach, so he isn't going to act like it. That's my point. There is no need to bully or harass a guy for simply just not being capable. Again, he did not hire himself. You just fire him and move on.

The only clapping monkey is you, cheering on and getting conned by a lifelong loser.

Does an elementary school kid make $5M a year? Does that elementary school kid say how Lebron is old and can't dunk as good anymore, so it's OK he can't dunk?

They miss the points because they are not true fans of UK, or they hate Kentucky, or they hate his religion or they hate the car he drives. Are you getting it. I wish people had to give their. Real name and address and then this shit would stop. They are cowards and wear a mask called the Internet.

How much he gets paid doesn't really matter. Any coach at Kentucky would make minimum 5 million. Again, Mitch Barnhart gave him that deal. This also has nothing to do with my post which is just stop bullying the man. Nobody is saying extend him.

I guarantee you more people nationally consider this mad-dog fanbase more of a laughing stock than ever even consider Mark Pope. In the 2 years he's coached we've outperformed two out of the three other bluebloods in the national tournament. That's all the nation notices. But national media never misses an opportunity to mention what nutjobs we are. Y'all are out of control.

Right, that's why Caleb Holt and Tyran Stokes openly laugh about Kentucky in public media. It's the fans. The "nation" notices UK title betting odds at +6500. That's the fans, all right.

Congrats on us being the tallest midget. The difference is we know that we are idiots. Mark Pope still thinks he’s the best man for the job.

How about offering the job to more than three qualified coaches before just setting on Pope but that falls on the AD
