Been watching Christian Miller today talk about our portal additions, and he isn’t very high on them. Doesn’t feel like we got better on the O-line. He is making sense too.

We will not get better on the OL until the OL coach is upgraded. We had plenty of talent last year.

There was no one we could've added and woken up today and said "yeah, we got better at OL" lol. Even Peak would've been a downgrade from Proctor on paper. What's important is that we got the numbers and have a room that has the talent to develop. The key here will be whether we give them a coach who can develop them, imo.Been watching Christian Miller today talk about our portal additions, and he isn’t very high on them. Well I’m not sure how we could get worse on the OL so there’s that.

Also I’m not sure how you couldn’t be high on Greene and Rodgers. Most likely day 1 starters along with Thompkins.
To his point on the OL the coaches are either going to look geniuses or it’s going to be embarrassing. They got some highly recruited guys just young.

It is impossible to say whether the offensive line will be worse or better.
The question is: according to the PFF, we had the best returning offensive line in the entire nation. Did that actually happen?
You can have several NFL-level players on the line (as we did) and it can still be bad.
The staff did what had to be done: they flipped the entire line. What we need now is a better coach.

Everyone will have their opinions. Time will tell but we have a lot of hungry OL imo now with talent and youth that are not afraid of competition. It’s pretty much an open competition and think we got guys that are going to compete their a** off fighting for a starting spot. They know jobs are open and they’ll have to fight for it. I like the numbers on the OL as well.

He’s watching film of individual players. The OL is a group position. No matter how good they are individually, if they don’t communicate well and know their assignment, the OL will not perform well.

How would we “get better” in his eyes?
We’ve rolled highly ranked guys out there for 2 years and couldn’t confidently convert a 3rd and inches so maybe it takes gritty guys from Cal Poly to come in here and give a fuck.
Also agree on Kap. Need a solid OL coach.

From what I remember it took Christian a while to be a contributor so I would probably give these guys a chance too.

Outside of missing on Peak, it looks like a good bit of the former starting OL that transferred got some big money deals or had previous relationships where they moved to a new school. We can only add who's in the portal and with that, I think they did pretty good. The key for most of these guys is development so the staff betting on themselves makes sense. Delgatty looks pretty good and Brooks, Strayhorn, Haywood are all young guys who looks like they have potential. Fields feels like a Geno replacement for us, which is still needed. If nothing else, probably raises the floor of this room.

So I’m guessing he liked what he saw from last year’s line then…

Well we’re replacing our experience from last year with mostly unproven guys. That doesn’t mean they’ll be worse or better, it just means we didn’t land much experience in the portal.

it's kind of hard to improve on an all-american left tackle.
it's tbd on everyone else. I like who they added from the portal more than who they lost to the portal.

From a production standpoint we can't be any worse on the oline.
