If his ticker is sketchy and his will to keep doing this is gone he should retire. He has nothing left to prove. Tay Kinney isn't coming in and winning it all as a freshman

I need it for my soul. He just can't go out like this man... especially not if we're handing off the program to an assistant. Makes me sick to think about
Would not expect anything less from someone with that username.

I know he has nothing to prove, it just feels bad to leave on a 4 seed 2nd round exit

Bill’s legacy has already been cemented. Regardless, he’s the best, most successful coach in KU’s storied history. He will be beloved by KU fans forever. For that, I hope whatever he decides will give him peace and the opportunity to live out the rest of his life however he wants.

What makes you think the additional year doesn't end in a 2nd round exit? That's become the norm for us in the NIL/portal era.

He said he "loves" what he's doing. But it's the health concerns and the family feeling about them that will decide.

What concerns me is he's had multiples issues since the original heart problem back in 2023. My brother had to have quadruple bypass surgery 15+ years ago and one thing his cardiologist told him is that if he is able to maintain the status quo after that surgery, he should be fine. Once you have other issues on top of that, things can start going downhill fast. With the pressure of the job and other expectations, that can't help. I want Bill to be able to go out on a winning note, but I also want him to have a long life.

If he’s still coaching at a high level and his health is holding up, why just one more year? 😊

This makes sense with the recruiting class that he has coming in. I think he is excited about the class.

Well it totally could, but we have potential for a stacked recruiting class and DPOY returning

If health is the ultimate reason to hang it up then he should do it and maybe he went longer than he should. If he feels good, then he needs to break all the outsiders hearts and come back and say he isn’t thinking about retiring and quit asking. I don’t think he is done.

I still think he’s one of the top five best coaches in America. I do think he needs to get better with some of the portal evaluations. I also would like him to do a thorough evaluation on how he wants to run his offense. In the past, he’s done a good job of tailoring his offense to his personnel. We used to be a hi-low team. Then when we had Frank and Devonte, it was more of a four out one in. I’m not really sure what that was this season. Whatever it was, it was not good. Lastly, I think it’s probably time for him to shake up his staff a little bit. Bland and Case are looking for a head coaching gigs. Kurtis and Doc are long in the tooth. I think having some new blood in here to go with Bechard, Dooley, and Vaughn would probably serve coach well. Maybe look at a couple of his former players or hire Ballard away from Washburn. Bring Evan Manning home. That would hurt Arizona while improving Kansas. At the end of the day, I still think Bill is more than capable of delivering the goods. Just need to make some better evaluations in the off-season.

Love your counterpoints and agree with most of them. Self's bread and butter, in my opinion, was always player development. When you pair that with his very obvious coaching acumen, that is what led to all of the success KU has had under him. It hasn't disappeared in college basketball but player development is something that has been greatly diminished and isn't as important as it used to be. Guys that come into a big program and develop year after year and stick with a program are going to become rarer and rarer. Self's portal evaluation and overall roster construction has been pretty awful if we are being honest since the portal era began. This is the 2nd year in a row where we are in March with essentially no bench. Totally agree with your assessment on the assistant coaches but I just don't think Bill has it in him to make wholesale changes and it's honestly kind of pointless if he's going to do that and only has a year left anyways. So by your assessment, Bill needs to make changes in the offense, revamp his entire portal evaluation process, and shake up the coaching staff. So basically everything...

Re Bill's health...he's clearly modified his diet and maybe other behaviors so he's looking fit as the proverbial fiddle. If he maintains his diet and is on a statin and/or LDL reducing drug, he could have ten more years of cardiac-incident-free life, easily. Also, it helps a lot if someone is employed in a role they enjoy and welcome, as he claims to be. And his docs have surely made those points, using them to emphasize to him the need to be compliant. I predict he's back and he says so by this time next week.

Even if he saw the signs of a problem at some point next season, we do have a guy to take us to the finish line with Self’s committed recruits and returnees. I’m a JV fan, but he would have so much more success with the guys likely lined up for next year with a Self return and a 2nd year with Self. I want him back because he’s Bill Self and because JV could really benefit from another year with Self.
