The 2022 ACC Baseball Tournament came to a close on Sunday afternoon, with the North Carolina Tar Heels coming out on top. UNC earned a 9-5 victory over rival NC State on Sunday to secure the title.

NC State jumped out to an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning, but UNC quickly struck back with two runs of its own in the bottom half. The Tar Heels then struck for six more runs in the second, taking a commanding 8-1 lead early on. UNC went on to score one more run in the fourth, and that proved to be enough.

NC State came back a bit in the late innings, scoring two runs in the sixth and two more in the ninth. Ultimately, though, the Tar Heels held on to secure the victory, adding another impressive stamp on its resume ahead of NCAA Tournament selection.

Angel Zarate, Danny Serretti, and Vance Honeycutt each had two hits for the Tar Heels. Honeycutt drove in five runs, including a three-run home run in the early innings.

UNC hopes to become a regional host for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

The 2022 ACC Baseball Tournament was split into four three-team pools. Pool A includes Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and Clemson. Pool B includes Louisville, Georgia Tech and Pitt, while Pool C features Miami, Wake Forest and NC State. Notre Dame, Virginia and Florida State make up Pool D. Duke and Boston College did not make this year’s ACC Tournament.

Teams will play one game against the other two teams in their respective pools. The team with the best record in each pool will advance to the next phase of the tournament on Saturday, with a trip to the conference championship game on the line.
