Alabama A&M's Medrick Burnett Jr., 20, declared dead by coroner

Alabama A&M’s Medrick Burnett Jr. has passed away from injuries sustained in a game last month.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed Burnett’s death, pronouncing him dead on Wednesday evening. This comes after clarification was needed on Wednesday when he was announced to be dead when he was still apparently on life support at UAB Hospital. Burnett Jr. was 20 years old.
Burnett Jr. took a head-to-head collision while on kickoff coverage during what is known as the Magic City Classic between Alabama A&M and Alabama State on October 26th. He was stretchered off of the field and then taken to the hospital in Birmingham from there where he remained until he succumbed to that matter a month later.

The collision, per his family, caused brain bleeding and swelling that had kept him in the ICU.
“He was in ICU and not doing well. He had several brain bleeds and swelling of the brain. He had to have a tube to drain to relieve the pressure, and after two days of severe pressure, we had to opt for a craniotomy, which was the last resort to help try to save his life,” wrote Dominece James, Burnett Jr.’s sister, on GoFundMe.
Burnett Jr. was in his first season with the Bulldogs after transferring in from Grambling State. He appeared in seven games this year as a redshirt freshman for Alabama A&M where he had posted five tackles.
Alabama A&M has yet to share another release or statement regarding Burnett Jr.’s death.
Burnett Jr., a native of Lakewood, California, played high school football at Mayfair.
