Wisconsin quarterback Billy Edwards will be a game-time decision for Saturday’s Big Ten opener against Maryland, sources tell On3. The former Maryland transfer joined the Badgers this offseason, but exited the season opener with a left knee sprain.

Edwards has been sidelined against Middle Tennessee and Alabama but has progressed to being day-to-day. The quarterback has been on the practice field this week in the lead-up to Saturday.

“It’s just going to be day-to-day,” Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell said earlier this week. “I think he warmed up Saturday and has continued to do things for us.”

The fifth-year transfer played at Maryland from 2022 to 2024 after transferring in from Wake Forest. The Terrapins starter in 2024, he completed 65% of his passes for 2,881 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Maryland finished 4-8; Edwards is 8−7 as a starter.

With Billy Edwards sidelined, Danny O’Neil has stepped in. The San Diego State transfer has completed 73% of his passes for 520 yards to go with five touchdowns and four interceptions, along with a touchdown run.

A former Colorado commit, O’Neil was 11 of 17 for 117 yards and two interceptions with a touchdown in Wisconsin’s loss at Alabama. The Badgers are 2-1 entering Saturday’s noon ET kick on NBC.

The Terrapins are 3-0 to start the season, led by true freshman quarterback Malik Washington. Maryland and Wisconsin will meet for the fifth time in series history, with the Badgers holding a 4-0 all-time advantage. The last meeting came back in 2022 at Camp Randall.

Wisconsin is a 10-point home favorite, according to BetMGM.
