College Football Rankings: CBS Sports updates Top 25 after turbulent Week 5

Week 5 did not disappoint, featuring multiple ranked matchups, overtime thrillers and exciting performances. In its fallout, CBS Sports has overhauled its top 25 rankings ahead of Week 6.
Several teams like Oregon, Ole Miss and Alabama made big moves in the rankings. However, teams like LSU and Florida State who suffered crushing defeats weren’t treated so kindly.
Throughout it all, the same No. 1 team remains. Here’s how CBS Sports’ top 25 rankings shake up after Week 5.
1. Ohio State (-)
Ohio State kicked Big Ten action off with a bang, defeating Washington 24-6 coming off the Buckeyes bye week. This continued a trend of defensive dominance for Ohio State early on this season. Through four games, the Buckeyes defense has allowed 22 total points — 5.5 points per game.
They’ll look to continue that trend this weekend at home against Minnesota. It’s safe to say that it’s been an impressive start to the season for the defending national champions.
2. Oregon (+4)

Oregon silenced its critics after beating Penn State on the road 30-24 during double overtime on Saturday. Ducks defensive back Dillon Thieneman picked off Nittany Lions QB Drew Allar to finish the game after Oregon scored touchdowns on both of its OT possessions.
The Ducks are going to enjoy a well-earned bye week on Saturday. However, they return to the field during Week 7 to host No. 8 Indiana — another opportunity for Dan Lanning and company to prove themselves further as a championship contender.
3. Miami (-1)
Miami didn’t play this weekend, but will be a part of college football’s featured Week 6 bout in the ACC between the No. 3 Hurricanes and No. 18 Florida State. The Seminoles are coming off an upset loss at Virginia, while Miami is undefeated on the season.
So far, Miami has two wins over ranked teams and a win over Florida. If they can come out on the other side of Saturday victorious, the toughest test of Miami’s season will be past them.
4. Ole Miss (+9)
One of the biggest question mark for Ole Miss coming into the season was what it would look like under center. Austin Simmons was thought to be the answer, but instead QB Trinidad Chambliss has emerged as one of the most entertaining quarterbacks in the country.
In three starts, the DII transfer has just under 1,000 yards passing and 200 yards rushing while helping lead Ole Miss to a 3-0 start to SEC play. Most recently, he threw for over 300 yards in a 24-19 win over LSU.
5. Indiana (+5)

Indiana survived Iowa, escaping back to Bloomington with a 20-15 victory over the Hawkeyes. QB Fernando Mendoza threw his first interception of the season during the game, but came back the next drive to throw a 49-yard strike to WR Elijah Sarratt for the go-ahead score.
It catapults the Hoosiers to 5-0 to begin the season. They’re on a bye during Week 6, but will return the following week for a top 10 matchup on the road against Oregon.
6. Texas A&M (+2)
Texas A&M rode the wave of momentum from South Bend, through its bye week back to College Station on Saturday. The Aggies defeated Auburn 16-10, notably holding the Tigers to one yard of offense during the fourth quarter.
Letting up 28.6 points per game on average coming in, the Aggies’ success on defense helped propel them to victory. Now 4-0 to start the season, Texas A&M has a chance to prove why they’re worthy of College Football Playoff consideration heading into the bulk of conference play.

7. Oklahoma (-)
Oklahoma was idle in Week 5. However, the Sooners are expected to be without start QB John Mateer for their upcoming bout with Kent State following surgery on his throwing hand.
They’ll hope to have him back sooner rather than later as the Red River Rivalry looms during Week 7. If not, backup Michael Hawkins Jr. will continue to hear his number called. Head coach Brent Venables expressed his confidence in Hawkins, so getting to play Kent State first is a great opportunity for him to gain experience before the blockbuster rivalry game.
8. Texas Tech (+3)

Money talks, and Texas Tech can back it up. The Red Raiders spent to win this offseason and are doing it emphatically to begin the 2025 season.
Through four games, Texas Tech is averaging 52 points per game this season. They scored 60+ during its first two matchups while most recently defeating a ranked Utah team 34-10 on its home turf. Currently the highest-ranked team in the Big 12, the Red Raiders may be the team to beat this season in the conference.
9. Alabama (+9)
Alabama’s 24-21 victory over Georgia in Athens solidified the Crimson Tide’s status as a major player in the SEC this season. QB Ty Simpson totaled three touchdowns and passed for 276 yards during the upset win, handing the Bulldogs their first loss between the hedges in six seasons.
The win firmly puts Week 1 behind Alabama, who won’t have it easy in the coming weeks. Five of its next six matchups will be against ranked opponents, beginning with a revenge game against No. 16 Vanderbilt at home.
10. Georgia (-7)
The Bulldogs fell seven spots in CBS Sports rankings this week after their loss to the Crimson Tide. They’ll get an opportunity to bounce back against Kentucky at home this weekend before taking on Auburn in Jordan-Hare Stadium the following week.
Georgia still has matchups against No. 4 Ole Miss, No. 9 Texas and No. 17 Georgia Tech to keep its favor in the eyes of the College Football Playoff committee, not to mention already beating a ranked Tennessee on the road. There’s no reason to count out the Bulldogs so early this season.
