WATCH: Controversial call leads to wild ending, helps Purdue avoid upset against Michigan State
No. 3 Purdue and Michigan State were in a barn burner this afternoon in the Breslin Center. After the Boilermakers took as much as a 13-point lead in the first half, both teams battled down the stretch of the second half. However, as things got close in the final moments, a single call may have impacted how things ended in this one.
On an out-of-bounds call, the officials called it Purdue ball on the floor. After a review, though, it appears Zach Edey had more impact on the ball than Mady Sissoko. Still, referees elected to go to the possession arrow to decide the call, which gave the ball to Purdue.
The frenzy didn’t stop there, though. That call led to a pair of free throws from Fletcher Loyer before Tyson Walker returned fire with a midrange jumper that gave the Spartans the lead back. Finally, the Boilermakers dribbled the length of the floor, through it in to Edey, and he scored a lay-in with just two seconds remaining. Walker then air-balled the final three-point attempt that officially gave Purdue the 64-63 win.

Edey was dominant down low for the Boilermakers. He scored a career-high 32 points, his fourth 30-point game of the season, on 13-26 shooting. Edey also grabbed 17 boards and blocked two shots. On the other side, Walker almost played hero again in East Lansing against Purdue. He scored a season-high of 30 points to give the Spartans a chance in the final moments.
This game had all the stakes with the No. 1 spot in the Big Ten on the line. Now, Purdue firmly holds onto that spot at 17-1 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Spartans slide to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in the Big Ten after now dropping their last two.
