D1Baseball revamps Top 25 rankings after sweep, upset-filled weekend
Pure chaos reigned across college baseball this weekend. As a result, D1Baseball’s Top 25 rankings have been completely revamped. Overall, 12 ranked teams lost their series over the weekend, eight of which came via the sweep.
Half of the top ten dropped their series, and all five of those teams were swept. No. 3 Florida fell to No. 6 South Carolina, while No. 4 Vanderbilt ran into Tennessee and No. 5 Arkansas dropped three against Georgia.
Additionally, No. 7 East Carolina‘s struggles on the roads continued, going 0-3 at Wichita State. No. 8 Virginia also struggled away from home this weekend, falling three times at Notre Dame. The sweeps didn’t end there, though. No. 12 Louisville went 0-4 on the week, which included a sweep at Duke. No. 14 Texas was swept by Big 12 foe Oklahoma, and No. 18 North Carolina was swept at home against No. 20 Boston College.
Four other teams lost their respective series over the weekend. No. 13 Kentucky went 1-2 against Texas A&M, while No. 24 Southern Miss fell twice at No. 10 Coastal Carolina. A pair of Pac-12 teams had disappointing weekend as well, with No. 21 Oregon State losing twice at No. 19 Arizona State and No. 22 UCLA going 1-2 at USC.
Eight top 25 teams being ranked is something that is almost never seen in college baseball, and D1Baseball’s updated rankings reflect that. As teams fight to the end of the season and aim to continue building their postseason resumes, more upsets are sure to follow in the coming weeks.
