ESPN’s Greg McElroy shook up his top 25 college football rankings ahead of a loaded Week 5 slate of games. With where these teams are now, these could change drastically.

Oregon-Penn State and Alabama-Georgia are the highlights this weekend, among many other games. Get ready to turn these rankings upside down if there are upsets!

But before we get there, McElroy revealed his latest set of rankings on Always College Football. Let’s dive in.

1. Miami

The Hurricanes are at the top of McElroy’s rankings this week and it’s easy to see why. Beating Notre Dame and rival Florida already helps out!

Regardless of those records, Miami is 4-0, has a Heisman contender in QB Carson Beck and Mario Cristobal might have the best collection of talent assembled in his tenure. The ACC goes through the Hurricanes moving forward.

2. Ohio State

The Buckeyes haven’t done anything to not be No. 1 in McElroy’s rankings, except be named Miami. Ohio State is 3-0 on the year, beating Texas and other non-conference foes.

They’ll get a road test at Washington this weekend before the meat grinder of the Big Ten schedule. But, this is certainly a team led by QB Julian Sayin, WR Jeremiah Smith and DB Caleb Downs that could repeat.

3. Oregon

Dante Moore might be the biggest reason why Oregon is this good, considering the offseason questions about the QB position. But the truth is, the Ducks are a well oiled machine in all facets.

With that, they’re the second Big Ten team on McElroy’s list before we even get to the SEC. The game of the weekend could be Oregon at Penn State Saturday.

4. LSU

LSU is rolling right now under Brian Kelly 4.0, as in, the fourth year of his tenure! The Tigers have grinded out tough wins over Clemson and Florida with elite defense but the offense has been shaky at times.

It could be due to Garrett Nussmeier’s torso injury, but they’ll have to step it up a bit. Still, they’re a top four team per McElroy and the current top team in the SEC.

5. Georgia

Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton (14) runs into the end zone for a touchdown during a college football game between Tennessee and Georgia at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sept. 13, 2025.

The Bulldogs got a deserved week off following an epic win over Tennessee. Guess what the prize is? Alabama!

The good news is, this top five McElroy team gets the Crimson Tide at home this weekend. They’ll be the home favorites and a win over a rival could go a long way to positioning in the SEC and College Football Playoff race.

6. Florida State

Florida State made a statement early this season by beating down Alabama. Since then, they’ve taken care of business in other non-conference games, so McElroy has them in his top 10.

This weekend features a road date at Virginia on a Friday night. If you pick up a win in ACC play prior to the game vs. Miami, this team could move up.

7. Oklahoma

Oklahoma is in McElroy’s top 10 but that could change in a hurry. QB John Mateer underwent surgery on his hand and could be sidelined for three weeks.

This changes the dynamic of the undefeated Sooners considering Mateer was the Heisman favorite prior to the injury. If he misses the game against Texas in a few weeks, this could get messy.

8. Texas Tech

Texas Tech has some serious QB depth with Behren Morton and Will Hammond. The latter stepped up after injury and led the Red Raiders to a dominating win over Utah.

This is a bonafide top 10 team per McElroy. At this rate, it seems like Texas Tech is the favorite in the Big 12.

9. Indiana

Indiana stomped Illinois 63-10 and it might not have even been that close. The Hoosiers are for real, proving right now that last year was no fluke.

As it stands, this team could be playoff bound again, being in McElroy’s top 10. Curt Cignetti has something special cooking in 2025. They’ll have to handle a tougher schedule, but seem built for it, especially with QB Fernando Mendoza.

10. Penn State

The Nittany Lions are set to be challenged this weekend against Oregon in State College. Penn State rounds out McElroy’s top 10 due to the 3-0 record and talent on paper.

If they win this game against the Ducks, we can say they’re for real. If they don’t, it might lead to more “can’t win the big one” criticism for James Franklin.
