Joey Galloway releases updated top five rankings after Week 7 of college football

The college football landscape is beginning to form a clearer picture after seven weeks of action. As such, ESPN analyst Joey Galloway released his updated top five teams from what we’ve seen so far.

Some are the suspects that we expected to be there at the beginning of the season, while a couple of others have climbed massive heights to get here. There’s still a ton more football to be played and we’ll see who ultimately makes the list at the end of the season.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State has looked the part so far this season after entering the year at No. 3 in the preseason AP Poll. They knocked off No. 1 Texas in the season opener and have been rolling ever since, currently sitting with a 6-0 (3-0 Big Ten) record.

The Buckeyes are coming off of another top 25 win this past week after taking down No. 17 Illinois by a score of 34-16. They’ve been one of the top defenses in the country and rank first in points allowed per game (6.8) and third in yards allowed per play (3.9).

2. Miami Hurricanes

Miami also had high expectations entering this season after bringing in quarterback Carson Beck and a number of others through the transfer portal. So far Beck has looked impressive, throwing for 1,213 yards and 11 touchdowns to three interceptions while completing an ACC-high 73.4% of his passes.

Beck helped Georgia reach the SEC Championship game last year and has his sights set on a conference title with the Hurricanes. Miami already has three top 25 wins this season against Notre Dame, USF and Florida State, which is good enough for second in Joey Galloway’s rankings.

3. Texas A&M Aggies

The Aggies have announced their arrival as contenders in just the second season under coach Mike Elko. They’ve rolled through the first half of the season to a 6-0 (3-0 SEC) record and show no signs of slowing down.

Texas A&M has no shortage of offensive weapons, able to air it out with quarterback Marcel Reed or hand it off to one of Rueben Owens or Le’Veon Moss. The schedule also sets itself up well for the Aggies to get to the College Football Playoff, with LSU, Missouri and Texas the toughest remaining tests.

4. Indiana Hoosiers

No one wanted to believe the Hoosiers could do it again, yet here we are. After leading Indiana to a College Football Playoff berth in his inaugural season, coach Curt Cignetti has them looking like they might be on their way back again this year.

Two weeks after steamrolling No. 9 Illinois, the Hoosiers walked into Autzen Stadium and handed No. 3 Oregon a 30-20 loss. Fernando Mendoza has looked like one of the top quarterbacks in the country so far with 1,423 yards passing and a Big Ten-leading 17 touchdowns to only two interceptions. Indiana has gotten through the toughest part of its schedule and has a good chance to run the table the rest of the way.

5. Alabama Crimson Tide

Many were ready to declare Alabama dead after a season-opening loss to Florida State. That now looks like an extreme overreaction as all the Crimson Tide have done since is win, reeling off five straight victories.

Alabama has won three straight games against ranked opponents, including beating Georgia in Athens, to land the final spot on Joey Galloway’s top five. They’ve got another huge game this week as they face Tennessee in the Third Saturday in October rivalry.
