Kansas State safety Logan Bartley was ejected for targeting in the second quarter of Friday’s game against Arizona State. The play occurred with 7:08 remaining in the first half, and since the ejection came before halftime, Bartley will be eligible for the next game against UCF.

Bartley went to make a tackle on Arizona’s Tre Spivey when he laid a big hit. The officials threw the flag for targeting and went to the replay monitor to review the call.

As FOX Sports rules analyst Mike Pereira assessed the play, he pointed out what the officials needed to see. Given the contact to the head and neck area on a defenseless player, he said the got the call correct.

“Remember, now, let’s forget what’s called on the field,” Pereira said on the broadcast. “When it goes to replay now, they have to officiate the whole play. They have to find the indicator. And then, they have to find on a defenseless player here, contact to the head or neck area.”

After the call came in, Pereira said Bartley wasn’t ejected because he led with the shoulder. Instead, there was helmet to helmet contact and he led with the helmet, which warranted the foul.

“I think that’s the type of hit they’re trying to get out of the game. Shoulder was actually okay. But when you looked at it, it was helmet-to-helmet contact. Leading with the helmet, so that’s the indicator that you’re looking at. That is a foul and was upheld.”

Logan Bartley arrived at Kansas State as a freshman this year out of the 2025 recruiting class. A three-star prospect, he was the No. 628 overall player from the cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking.

Arizona State held a 10-3 lead at the time of Bartley’s ejection and later added on to the advantage on the drive. Noah Fifita took a two-yard carry into the end zone to make it a 17-3 lead as time ticked away in the first half in Tucson. Because the two teams agreed to play the game before Arizona joined the Big 12, it is not considered a conference matchup.

K-State is looking to rebound from a surprising loss to Army a week ago, falling to the Black Knights 24-21. That dropped the Wildcats to 1-2 after they fell to Iowa State in the season opener in Dublin to kick off the 2025 season.
