Mario Cristobal calls for Heisman Trophy to be awarded after all postseason games are played

For the second straight season, Miami has a Heisman Trophy frontrunner at quarterback. Last season, it was Cam Ward, the eventual No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, who finished fourth in the final Heisman voting.

This season, Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal has former Georgia transfer Carson Beck leading the charge. Beck is currently listed with the second-best odds to win the 2025 Heisman Trophy at +600, according to BetMGM, just behind Oregon‘s Dante Moore (+500).

And while Cristobal says he hasn’t spoken with Beck about this season’s race, and doesn’t plan to, the fourth-year Miami head coach did offer one interesting fix to the Heisman Trophy process. He wants to move the annual ceremony from the second weekend in December to after the completion of postseason play.

“The only thing I’d wish about the Heisman Trophy is it was awarded when all the games are done,” Cristobal said on Wednesday’s episode of the Pardon My Take podcast. “That whole (giving out the) award before the postseason games are played is absolutely bizarre to me. Like I can’t comprehend it and never will.”

The Heisman Trophy ceremony has traditionally been held the weekend following the conclusion of the regular season and more recently, after conference championships are decided. Since 1977, the Heisman ceremony has been held on either the first or second Saturday in December. The lone exception came during the infamous 2020 season when Alabama receiver DeVonta Smith was awarded his Heisman on Jan. 5, 2021, during a virtual ceremony from Tuscaloosa due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Of course, despite complaints from coaches like Cristobal and a vocal contingent of college football fans, there doesn’t appear to be any significant push to move the date of the Heisman Trophy ceremony. It doesn’t appear to be changing.

Miami has two all-time Heisman Trophy winners, both quarterbacks, with Vinny Testaverde winning it in 1986 and Gino Torretta in 1992. Coincidentally, Cristobal was a senior offensive tackle on that 1992 Hurricanes squad led by Torretta, who was awarded the Heisman Trophy on Dec. 12, 1992, roughly three weeks before top-ranked Miami lost to No. 2 Alabama, 34-13, to win the national championship.
