Mercer QB Whitt Newbauer expected to transfer to Oklahoma

Mercer transfer quarterback Whitt Newbauer has signed with Oklahoma and is expected to transfer to Norman, a source tells On3. The Sooners have been eyeing a transfer quarterback in the portal with only two scholarship quarterbacks on their roster following Cole Gonzales’s departure.
The 6-foot-6, 225-pound quarterback threw for 1,398 yards with 12 touchdowns and only four interceptions in 2024 as a freshman. Newbauer also rushed for two touchdowns as Mercer finished 11-3, earning SoCon Offensive All-Freshman honors.
Mercer won a first-round FCS playoff game over Rhode Island before a loss to North Dakota State in the FCS quarterfinals. Newbauer was a two-time all-conference pick at Cardinal Gibbons in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Oklahoma has reshaped its quarterback room through the portal. Brent Venables landed Washington State transfer John Mateer in the winter window. Mateer led the Cougars to an 8-4 record in 2024, as the quarterback threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns while rushing for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. He produced 330.4 yards per game, too.
Since then, rave reviews have come in from Norman on the quarterback and his new offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle. The Sooners return former four-star recruit Michael Hawkins, who played in seven games in 2024.
Oklahoma now has another option in its quarterback room with Whitt Newbauer.
