No. 11 Oklahoma holds on to upset No. 4 Alabama, 23-21

It’s another Saturday with a big SEC matchup in the afternoon window. Oklahoma and Alabama are squaring off in a huge matchup at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

For the Sooners, it’s an opportunity to enhance their College Football Playoff resume after just missing out on the projected 12-team bracket this past week. A loss would not only virtually knock OU out of the race for the Top 12, but also give the Crimson Tide even more of a path toward a first-round bye.

Alabama converts huge 4th down ahead of 2-minute timeout

Facing 4th and 1 with 2:08 to play, Alabama brought out offensive lineman Kaydn Proctor as the running back. Instead, Ty Simpson faked the handoff and gave it to Lotzeir Brooks, who got the first down to get the Crimson Tide closer to field goal range at the two-minute timeout.

After Oklahoma’s drive stalled out in the red zone, the Sooners re-took the lead on a field goal. Tate Sandell made the 24-yarder to put OU back out in front, 23-21, to start the fourth quarter.

As Oklahoma continued to generate pressure on Ty Simpson, the Sooners forced their third turnover of the day. Taylor Wein forced the fumble on a strip-sack, giving Oklahoma the ball at the Alabama 28-yard line.

Daniel Hill does it again, Alabama takes the lead

With 7:27 left in the third quarter, Alabama took its first lead of Saturday’s game. Daniel Hill took the direct snap into the end zone for his second touchdown of the day, putting the Crimson Tide up 21-20 over Oklahoma.

After a pass interference penalty wiped away Ty Simpson’s second interception of the game, Alabama got on the board. Daniel Hill ran in the 1-yard touchdown to cut the Oklahoma lead to 10-7 with 10:36 left in the second quarter.

Through the first quarter, Oklahoma held a 10-0 lead following the pick-six. Alabama totaled 68 yards of offense, led by 60 passing from Ty Simpson, while Oklahoma had 42 total yards. The Tide will have 2nd and 8 coming up to start the second quarter.

Ty Simpson throws pick-six

For just the second time this year, Ty Simpson threw an interception. His pass was picked off by Eli Bowen, who took it back 87 yards for a touchdown. The play came after Alabama caught a break on a fumble recovery, and just like that, Oklahoma went up 10-0 on the Crimson Tide with 2:03 left in the first quarter.

After an impressive kick return from Isaiah Sategna, Oklahoma ended up settling for a field goal. Tate Sandell was good from 25 yards to put the Sooners ahead 3-0 against Alabama in the first quarter.
